Medicine 2018?

Katisha · 01/07/2017 12:13

Is there already a thread for medicine applications for 2018 entry?
If not can I start one?
Wondered if anyone knew about the Birmingham GCSE situation as DS has A stars and As at GCSE and likely to be predicted A stars at A level but is coming up on their offers calculator as unlikely to get an interview.
Is it pointless to apply to Birmingham if not all stars at GCSE? Didn't get a star in biology.

Mommymoon we are hoping Sheffield will be about the same (667). A late rethink on Monday night (when I though it was all over) put Sheffield into 4th place.

An offer! Wow. DD is hoping for one early offer for 5th option to feel like someone wants her soon after form goes in. Definitely worth celebrating. 🎉 The rest will be a long haul.

mumsneedwine · 10/10/2017 15:19

That's exactly how my DD felt about her offer SomersetS. That someone wanted her for something. Think Medicine is so tough to even apply for and there are so many hoops to jump through that it can be a bit deflating.

watfordmummy · 10/10/2017 21:40

PS done, well he’s meeting with head of sixth tomorrow to confirm. I just want it submitted 🤞

Mommymoomitzi · 11/10/2017 06:31

Watfordmommy - paid and sent DD's over to referee last night. Another hurdle jumped, another wait begins. Hope everyone keeps in touch and let's me know if interview days are achieved! Thinking of you all ladies x

Hummingbird21 · 11/10/2017 14:55

DS has finally submitted his PS & selected his four med schools but is now having second thoughts on his 4th choice! I'm just glad that part's over, phew! Now we all have to cross our fingers & wait...good luck to everyone's son or daughter!
Is anybody sending their DC on a practice interview course? Are they worth it?

SomersetS · 11/10/2017 15:34

Paid & just waiting for school to upload reference. Teacher wants to sleep on it!
We too wobbled about 4th choice but not going to change again. Suspect our 2nd choice is a "no hope" but it's a heart not head.
Wasn't going to send on I/v course - school have promised to help though not sure how much they actually know.
One offer, that's all we need👌
Good luck team.

Abra1d · 11/10/2017 16:07

We didn't bother with interview courses last year and I don't think anyone at the school did either, but the school did a practice MMI night.

If you google around there are lots of MMI sample questions online. We practised asking them in the car and at dinner, etc, referring back to the guiding principles (I think that's what they're called!). There were some role-play questions online too and we tried doing some of them but it was sometimes a bit like that sketch in I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue on R4 at times when they have to guess the mystery ailment or identity ...

Even so there were some stations where no possible practice could have been set up. Doing one thing with your hands while answering a question. It was quite a funny thing, too, and made me laugh when she told me, but I won't describe it in case it comes up again. The point was that maintaining eye contact and communication with the other person was at least as important as the other activity.

There were some scenarios that were non medical, ethical things that could come up at school or with friends.

All gone here too with some drama until the last minute since DD decided to go with Exeter for her 4th choice upon Manchester telling her they were using the sjt score, except that reading on tsr made me wonder, so she called again and they said that they only did so for those who didn't fall in the top 30% but were still considered, so suddenly Manchester was back on the cards, except that DD had already submitted her application. I told her that I thought she should change it on track, she seemed to kind of agree, then went quiet about it, didn't respond when I chased this morning, and then just said it was all done, so for all I know, she decided to stick with Exeter!!

Somerset, hope the teachers have done their bit now, not very fair to leave DD hanging on. What makes you think that choice 2 is a 'no hope'? Mommymoomitzi, hope your DD's school has done their part too.

Thanks Abra for the tips. No interview course here either, but DD was lucky to get some practice this summer during her residential placement. She said they were harder than she'd imagined but fun too.

It's quite nice to enter the 'waiting but nothing to expect' period!

Hummingbird21 · 12/10/2017 17:32

Thanks very much for all the info Abra, I think we'll be having some 'fun' discussions on our car journey into school (if we're all awake enough!)

SomersetS · 12/10/2017 20:37

And relax......
Swing - Glass of wine tonight - school did their thing & form went this morning. Choice number 2, DD loved but her points total
According to TSR is probably borderline based on old data. Net mind, others are good I believe. Hope your DD chose whatever was best for her.

In the words of the film ladies "may the odds be ever in your favour".

watfordmummy · 12/10/2017 21:57

Submitted here - phew!!! Edinburgh, Cardiff, St Andrews and Southampton.

...and now we wait. Fingers crossed all!

Mommymoomitzi · 14/10/2017 12:47

DD has acknowledgments of application from Cardiff and UEA. Anybody else got any from other unis?

JulyAphrodite · 14/10/2017 13:22

Hi acknowledgements received from BSMS, Southampton, UEA but not Exeter it’s been 2 weeks now

Mommymoomitzi · 14/10/2017 13:42

Got Bristol, no Plymouth yet - anyone got an acknowledgement from them? Maybe Exeter is waiting until after 15th? Perhaps call them on Tuesday? I know it is not nice, checking track every 10 minutes

adrinkofwater · 14/10/2017 14:07

DD has had acknowledgements from all 4 - Cardiff, Leicester, Bristol and Newcastle.

SomersetS · 14/10/2017 14:33

We've had acknowledgements form Hull Leicester Sheffield & Swansea. Waiting on Liverpool. Leicester was in junk folder so make sure you look there too!

swingofthings · 14/10/2017 15:06

Had just started to type that DD got none as applications were only sent yesterday but she just texted to say she heard from Bristol, BSMS and St George already! I think she's applied to Exeter rather than Manchester but is keeping it secret :)

Mommymoomitzi · 14/10/2017 19:32

We love secrets don't we?! 😬

teta · 15/10/2017 09:16

Can I join this thread with a Dd applying for Vet. Medicine? It's still Medicine, right 😀.
Dd is reapplying this year and reading your posts has brought all last year back. Its such a nerve-wracking time. It's easier the second time though.I do agree with the poster that work experience in a hospital/nursing home is invaluable. It helped my Dd to realise that she disliked hospitals and got annoyed by old ladies demanding toast all the time. She decided she much preferred dogs and realised Medicine wasn't for her.I used to pick her up after the hospital volunteering and she would be really irritable. However after the first day on a ' cow farm' she got in the car filthy and rather ripe but very happy.

watfordmummy · 15/10/2017 09:27

Gosh that’s something else for me to stress about... acknowledgements!!!

Off to hack into email account Wink

watfordmummy · 15/10/2017 09:28

Haha just checked all acknowledged apart from Cardiff Hmm

Mommymoomitzi · 15/10/2017 09:56

Welcome Teta!! The stress is real. Interesting that your DD prefers animals, my DD says she could never stick a needle in an animal, but has no such fear with people 🤔. Watfordmummy - Cardiff have defiantly sent acknowledgement. Maybe worth chasing? How many points did DC get for Cardiff? Anybody applied to Plymouth and heard?

swingofthings · 15/10/2017 12:45

*We love secrets don't we?! 😬
Ha ha, as long as the secret is revealed with a 'Mum, I got an interview' :)

Off to hack into email account wink
That really made me laugh :)

Welcome teta, of course vet school is medicine too, so come and join in on the journey.

The programme that DD with the local Medical School was exactly what you related, teaching pupils what Medicine was about so that they could either realise it was definitely what they wanted to do, or definitely not, the latter making the programme beneficial to.

Katisha · 15/10/2017 12:48

DS has heard from his 4. He's now working on a supplementary thing that Cambridge want - personal statement part 2 by the look of it...
