Continuation of the original thread which is now on to 40 page maximum.
Original thread (part 1) here: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/higher_education/2759621-Uni-offers-for-2017-start?

Most offers now received. My twins have had offers from their 4 and are currently deciding which will be firm and which insurance. One twin
( possibly two of them) is going to an offer holders' day coming up at Bristol next month with his friends from school.

Oh heck, aging, that's bad luck. Hope it gets sorted quickly.

....... got the offer within an hour of uploading the results (again!). Moral of the story - pick the phone up and talk to someone. Now, where's the gin.....

Very good, NameC. We will probably run out of space on this thread soon so perhaps need Part 3 to take us up to when they leave home.

@aginghippy - can you see the results on the school portal? Maybe a screen shot emailed to them would do the job?

lucy im looking forward to it too. must be a twin mum thing.
my DD is having her maths remarked, one mark off an A, with a d in one paper and As in the other 5. as you say sometimes they need AAA in the future.

Just put in remark request for DS maths too, like yours Carriemac he missed A by 2 UMS and is v down about it. Thankfully uni place not dependent on it but so wanted that A and got a C on one module. Hope both of ours are successful.

Was it the Edexcel c4 by any chance? DD's mark was down on that one (the one which was leaked and suspicions of cheating, as it happens....), she ended up with an A for maths yet an A* for FM.

BehindTheBlueDoor · 18/08/2017 13:55

Yes Errol, the infamous Edexcel C4. Got As on others and 2 UMS off an A in total. It may not come to anything but he worked so hard and it looks odd. We'll see.

LineysRun · 18/08/2017 14:12

My DS got an anomalous E (!) in C4 which, as you can imagine, brought his grade down. Bye bye Warwick.

Report
HSMMaCM · 18/08/2017 14:24

How are you all finding out how close their grades are ?

DD's just says the grades for her Edexl BTEC and AQA A level.

But then the other Edexl A level says Mark 45 D/Mark 74 C and has given her a C 247 overall. I can see she's just over a C for this one, but she'd like to know if she was close to a B for her AQA A level?

I have emailed sixth form, but they're probably all on a well earned break now.

DS asked for component scores from school when he picked up results yesterday and the grade boundaries are online. New linear exams seem to
provide you with a grade only but Maths is old spec so his results sheet broke the grade down. It's easy to see how they fared once you have the right info. Not all subjects give you what you need though. In one subject we have the scores he got on the papers from school but grade boundaries are not broken down into papers.

I have left it to the boys nad the school but one son in particular has all kinds of complex calculations going on about marks and things. In fact he took up a one page typed note to school even before he got the results setting out what he expected on each paper. One teacher has already go back to him today with feedback on one paper in one subject which is very fast of the teacher and very kind indeed. They can't take a decision on that until the other papers are looked at.

My other son who I do think should appeal his B has to wait for the paper to be returned by post (as different board).

They certainly don't want to be mraked down of course - challenge a B and get a C - so it's not a straight forward decision and no point appealing if you answered the question badly.

Hi Liney, my son also had an odd E grade for his Edexcel C4. It brought his Maths down from a B to a C overall. Luckily Swansea have still accepted him.

FreedaDonkey · 18/08/2017 18:48

It's a tough call whether to get a remark of a B. We had this last year but if by some total anomaly it went to a C, DS could have lost his place.

They also announced last year that remark were changing, and even if it had been marked wrong, the original mark would stand if the remarker could understand why the original mark was given Confused

Well done to everyone who got their places, it's been nerve wracking. DS didn't get his original course but has accepted a similar one at the same uni (Bristol, seems a popular choice on this thread!). Bristol have now said he won't get his original accommodation as he will be classed as a clearing student. Does anyone know if this is correct? Seems unfair as it's the same uni.

Lucysky2017 · 18/08/2017 19:40

I don't know. My sons aren't even telling me about the emails they get from Bristol although one said his choice of hall had double the numer applying as getting places and other halls which we thought less popular had 4 applicants per place. I wish he'd sent me the email as I would be interested in it. They find out on Wednesday.

I've told DS to phone again on Monday. Wish I hadn't said anything, especially on a Friday night, as he's really worried now.

My DD is sitting on two offers now.

One from university and one from drama school.
She has to decide over the weekend or we will be out of pocket.
She cried tonight ( and she's tough as old boots) ad she doesn't know what to doSad.

I don't feel I can say too much as I don't want to influence her when it's not my call.

Sigh.

Are they a v g university and a v g drama school, Carl? Tough choice.

Report
Helenluvsrob · 18/08/2017 22:42

Getahaircut I think it's time for one of those decision lists of the pros and cons of each choice. Your part is to make sure she's covered all aspects ( incl finance , accomidation and realistic future prospects/ employability ). Good luck.

Two great offers sounds enviable, but it must be such a tough decision for her, carl. Mine had a real dilemma between her two favourites because they were different courses, so it was a bit apples and oranges and impossible to judge which would be better for her. Now, while she's delighted to be going to Cambridge, she's regretful she can't also do EEE at Southampton. She said that before results day she was 'schrodingers student' - but the grades made the final decision for her. That's easier than having to explicitly turn down one or the other when presumably your DD would really love to do both uni and drama school.

DD was choosing between dance college and uni. She had almost decided on dance college because she needed to do that while she was young and could do uni later. She changed her mind after an injury and went for uni.

I suppose age isn't quite as much of a restriction for drama?

My sons accepted Hallam in clearing after a very rocky and difficult day yesterday . Not his first choice by any means but he's happy now. A level results were below expectations :(

He was 8 and 5 ums off the grade above (aqa economics and English lit) debating a remark ( his geography gcse went yo 12 marks and from a b to an a) thoughts ?

Also his gen studies was A A E - for the three papers ended up with C, how does this happen? I know not the end of the world but for his insurance his GS would have counted and might have made a difference :(

Errol glad to hear your DD made the Cambridge offer. Just to add to the C4 comments: this had no bearing on his uni offer but DS4 got absolutely full ums on every single AS and A2 maths paper except for a crash and burn in C4 which has just brought the overall mark down to an A. It's incredibly anomalous, profile wise, but to be fair he did say at the time it was bad.

Carl, was it the late entry drama school she got an offer from? (I can't remember which one you said it was, also I'm not up on drama schools hence the next point :)). I guess I'd encourage my DC to go to the best rated out of the drama school or the uni since if the uni is a top one the drama opportunities will be very good too.
