Continuation of the original thread which is now on to 40 page maximum.
Original thread (part 1) here: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/higher_education/2759621-Uni-offers-for-2017-start?

Most offers now received. My twins have had offers from their 4 and are currently deciding which will be firm and which insurance. One twin
( possibly two of them) is going to an offer holders' day coming up at Bristol next month with his friends from school.

Sorry, just seen they all are. Reading would definitely be best but totally get what you are saying about her mental health.

HSMMaCM · 03/03/2017 18:30

Thanks Mirabelle. I checked the BPS and told her she couldn't apply anywhere without it.

She seems so excited about it, even though I keep reminding her that she needs to get to grips with her research methods, which are her real bugbear at a level.

EnormousTiger · 03/03/2017 19:01

I think mine will manage practically (one was moaning he's the only sixth former in the UK who has to cook all his own meals but I bet he will thank me at university as they are both very good cooks and he has a pretty nice life here despite on one cooking for him).

Managing money is another issue too for them all. I think as mine have 3 older siblings who have all graduated they probably know a bit more than some and also my 2 are almost the oldest in their class too so pretty mature. Mocks next week are the next hurdle.

My Dd18 got an unconditional offer this afternoon to study languages at Edinburgh. She's been home for spring break as she's spending the year studying in China on a scholarship and was just aboard to board her Beijing plane at Schiphol when she got the UCAS email. Happy girl!

MirabelleTree · 03/03/2017 19:19

That's great she's excited HSM. They'll do a lot more on research methods and be using various different ones in their projects and hopefully in time it will become much more familiar and second nature to some extent.

damnedgrubble · 03/03/2017 19:19

dotdot Well done to your DD.

We're still to firm here, the decision has been made but DS has not got round to doing it, I wonder if he's not 100% sure.

RedHelenB · 03/03/2017 19:30

Offer for dd today Newcastle dental surgery

readsalotgirl63 · 03/03/2017 20:08

Hi i willgo has your dd had any offers and where else has she applied. We are in Scotland and dd felt Edinburgh rejection was related to the uni wanting more students who would pay rather than locals who won't. However she is happy with the offers she's got - has to get BB at Advanced Higher for Glasgow. Going to applicant days at Dundee, Glasgow and Strathclyde at the end of this month. The waiting for offers is horrible - fingers crossed for your dd - and everyone else who's still waiting.

dotdotdotmustdash · 03/03/2017 20:31

We're in Scotland too and we were very nervous about the Edinburgh application, although Dd did have an unconditional from them last year but declined it and went to China instead. This year she only applied to them and to the Conservatoire in Glasgow. Still waiting to hear from them but so relieved that Edinburgh has accepted her.

HSMMaCM · 03/03/2017 22:09

If dental surgery - I've always wondered what makes people want to look in other people's mouths. I suppose we'd be boring if we were all interested in the same thing though.

RedHelenB · 04/03/2017 00:42

HSM _ think its the variety and using hands and brain that is attractive to her.

HSMMaCM · 04/03/2017 07:48

I was pondering this overnight and apologies if I seemed rude about the dental work Blush. Lots of people can't understand why I work with children Grin.

We're out tonight and dd has a 'few friends ' over ...

RedHelenB · 04/03/2017 08:30

You didn't appear rude- it wouldn't appeal to ne either hit when I have trouble with my teeth I m glad I 've got a good BHS dentist to sort it out!

damnedgrubble · 04/03/2017 11:19

Well Ds has firmed his choices, I think he's made the right choice for him. Ironically, one of the ones that he has turned down looks best on paper but he really doesn't feel like he would be happy there so he's turned it down. It's a shame but I think he's right as his happiness is more important.

EnormousTiger · 04/03/2017 11:23

Mine are waiting to firm their choices until nearer the dead line. I'd rather get it out of the way but up to them.

One issue for most teenagers if they don't really know what it is like at university as they've never lived in one so it is quite hard to know what is doing to be something that will fit them best but a lot of life is taking risks and leaps of faith and it usually works out okay in the end.

Student finance done. I don't know if DS will need to sign for it again later as he isn't 18 until the summer. I'm not sure there would be any other finance he would be able to sign the terms of agreement for at 17.

BehindTheBlueDoor · 04/03/2017 13:02

We're having those same discussions here grubble. One of ds options comes higher in uni tables but he didn't love the uni and didn't get the 'right' feeling for him from the dept. He's also undecided about his firm/insurance so is leaving his choice for a while longer in the hope that the 'right' choice will emerge as he imagines life at both unis. The whole RG vs top 10 but not RG is worrying him too. Trying to support and allow him to focus on working for his exams. Thank goodness I only have to do this one more time in a few years!

Waitingforsherlock · 04/03/2017 13:21

Still waiting to hear from Bath here.

damnedgrubble · 04/03/2017 16:43

Ds had an offer of Aab from his favourite and aaa from the other, plus a third RG uni but he really disliked that one. It didn't make much sense to put aaa as an insurance for an Aab firm so he's rejected the aaa and the other RG in favour of a non RG university with a much lower offer. Both look good but I really hope he ends up at his firm as it's a well respected RG uni.

doglover · 04/03/2017 17:34

DD pressed the UCAS button last week to confirm her two choices. She's opted for Oxford (AAA) and Bristol (AAB). I'm pleased that the decision has been made and that she's happy with her selection. Her Oxford offer was a delightful surprise and she deliberated for ages between Bristol and Royal Holloway; the applicant day at the former helped her to make up her mind. Now to get the grades ...........

HSMMaCM · 06/03/2017 09:04

Ok. What have I forgotten.

  • uni applicant days booked
  • 4 may deadline for ucas choices
  • book accommodation
  • 31 May deadline for finance

Anything else?

EnormousTiger · 06/03/2017 09:11

dog, sounds great. I think ours (they didn't apply to Oxbridge) will go for Bristol with not sure about back up one, possibly Nottingham for one. I think mine will firm up after one has his Bristol visit.

Mocks today for them both. One has two this morning almost right after each other which is quite a lot at once.

OP posts:
BehindTheBlueDoor · 06/03/2017 09:42

Mine had mocks week before last. Getting results through now. They are ok but mocks were hard-better that to keep them on their toes than become complacent. Hopefully on track for the grades needed. Still to decide here which to form and insure. All require same grades so it's a choice based on the uni and most importantly the course.
Good luck to all

Lindor · 06/03/2017 16:16

Hi all,

can I join you?

So DD has 5 offers for psychology and is going to firm Exeter. The only other she is prepared to consider is Birmingham, but that offer is higher, so come results day she may be scrabbling for clearing places. She is capable of getting the grades, but always seems to be unlucky around exam time with health, being concussed etc .

It;s interesting to hear all your UCAS stories, and like someone elses DC, DD just can't press those buttons on her UCAS to firm her choices.

Good luck to everyone.

EnormousTiger · 06/03/2017 16:23

Well done to Lindor daughter with 5 offers.

One of my sons says there is advantage in not firming yet as it gives more chance to consider and change your mind which I suppose is right but I just like the idea of it being over and done with.
