University offers for 2017 start (Part 2)

Continuation of the original thread which is now on to 40 page maximum.
Original thread (part 1) here: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/higher_education/2759621-Uni-offers-for-2017-start?

Most offers now received. My twins have had offers from their 4 and are currently deciding which will be firm and which insurance. One twin
( possibly two of them) is going to an offer holders' day coming up at Bristol next month with his friends from school.

AAA and AAB. I bet the B one is cross after AAAA last year but I am pleased AAB is not that bad. It is what his sister and I got for a start! We haven't done too badly with AAB and exams are a bit of an unpredictable beast. He only needed AAB for his Bristol place anyway.

So the AAA one needed A*AA for Bristol but they probably rightly let him in.
I am happy.

BehindTheBlueDoor · 17/08/2017 10:01

V relieved DS got first choice despite AABB. He's happy to be in but v unhappy with grades. Mixed emotions here.

Needmoresleep · 17/08/2017 10:08

Congratulations to all, especially the soon-to-be Bristolians.

May I echo PPs. A gap year can be really constructive. DD deferred late because she had had a really tough year and needed some time out. Being a year older, and the different experiences she has had, has helped her appreciate what a great opportunity University is.

Lucysky2017 · 17/08/2017 10:11

Behind AABB is pretty good. My son's AAB is fine but it was jsut slightly surprising he got the B particularly as his high A last year at AS would have fed into it, he thought it all went well, he won the class prize, was the best in the year I think at that subject and it's his university subject. I will leave it to him and his teachers to decide if it needs a remark. It did slightly surprise me.

HSMMaCM · 17/08/2017 10:12

DD is happy with her firm choice offer, but was dicking around on UCAS and registered for adjustment "by mistake" 🙄. Nothing will happen to her confirmed place will it? She's panicking that she's lost it, but as far as I can tell, unless she accepts a place through adjustment, she still has it. Is that right?

titchy · 17/08/2017 10:16

Was the B geography Lucy? Dd also got a B which surprised her after a very high A at AS - seems like it was the last paper which brought her down considerably.

Lucysky2017 · 17/08/2017 10:16

I would ask the school. I am not sure.
When we were looking earlier my son printed out his acceptance letter and I said do not click anything yet until you've been up to school. We were looking to see if you had to click to accept the firmed place but it looked like you did nothing for that option but if you were doing something else then had things to click.

I don't know if registering for adjustment means you have rejected your firmed place. I would get on to the school and UCAS right away on that just in case.

MabelWotsits · 17/08/2017 10:28

On clearing how do you know what grades they are looking for? My neighbour cant work it out.

On the page all it does is direct her to the uni website with the normal grades.

QOD · 17/08/2017 10:28

🥂🍾
Dd got her first choice

FreedaDonkey · 17/08/2017 10:30

I thought adjustment meant you kept your firm place but are just browsing higher offers?

I thought that was the beauty of it!

Lucysky2017 · 17/08/2017 10:31

(Freeda it may well. I know nothing about adjustment so people just ignore my post above. I do not want to make anyone worry, sorry)

ErrolTheDragon · 17/08/2017 10:34

Ucas site is clear - registering for adjustment does not risk the place you've got
www.ucas.com/ucas/undergraduate/apply-and-track/results/ucas-adjustment-–-if-you’ve-done-better-expected

Apocalyptichorsewoman · 17/08/2017 10:36

allinahuddle mine too! I might have seen you at the open day. I liked that open day because all the other parents seemed friendly and a good laugh! 😊

HSMMaCM · 17/08/2017 10:40

Thanks everyone. I did read what ucas said about adjustment but DD was in such a panic she got me worried.

LineysRun · 17/08/2017 10:41

Mabel, DS is just ringing up based on his grades, to universities whose normal offer is a little higher. So not taking the micky, but aspiring to good courses. So far he's had four offers and one 'pending'.

Noregretsatall · 17/08/2017 10:44

HSM just to reassure you, my DD registered for Adjustment last year as she'd done hugely better than expected. She was due to go to Reading, got an offer in Adjustment for York, slept on it, woke the following morning, remembered all the reasons why she'd loved Reading so much, rejected York and kept her original offer for Reading. Had a brilliant year there too! So your DD will be fine. Good luck to her.

doglover · 17/08/2017 10:45

Oxford!!! She's in!!

TwitterQueen1 · 17/08/2017 12:06

Does anyone know anything about A papers? My DC's Russian paper did not appear on the printout and she's been told that if you get an A in a paper they won't put it on the printout. Sounds very odd to me but she has got an A overall despite getting a couple of Bs for other papers....

Kez100 · 17/08/2017 12:32

I believe A are only given for the final qualification once everything is added together and you've met the requirements for a . You don't get them on individual papers.

ByTheSea · 17/08/2017 13:10

DD got in first choice - St Andrews for Classics. She totally exceeded offer and predicted with three A*. Over the moon!

All the best to all who are happy and still working on it...

NotAClooo · 17/08/2017 13:24

Happy here - DS got Warwick confirmed even though offer was AAA but he got AAB.

Does anyone know if they look at actual results if someone is borderline. The B is in maths and only 2% below an A. Would that have made them more likely to take him than if it was a low B? Just interested to know how it works. (He also got an A in EPQ in a related subject. Although that didn't count for the main offer I wonder if that helped nudge him over the line?)

Gannet123 · 17/08/2017 13:42

They may not have looked at the marks - the decision maker may not have had access to them. The EPQ may have helped, as might a strong personal statement, if the decision maker had choices to make. Or their numbers may have been such that they had to take everyone with AAB. It's always a question of getting the right numbers on the course, not making academic judgments about individuals independently of everyone else.
You'll probably never know. Just enjoy the outcome!

NotAClooo · 17/08/2017 13:46

Thanks Gannett Smile

littlemissneela · 17/08/2017 13:53

Well done to everyones DC's who got their offers. My DS had a really rough year, ending with missing the most vital last couple of months of 6th form due to a chronic back problem. He didn't get his first choice, but got his second (Reading to do Computer Science). However, he has decided he has had it with maths, science etc and is going to do a Creative Writing course at Portsmouth for which he has been accepted! We are thrilled as it didn't look like he was going to be able to do anything. He is now away at a festival with his GF so we shall celebrate when he gets back home Wine

Carriemac · 17/08/2017 14:58

The DTS got identical grades and are off to their firm choices Oxford and leeds. so relieved and so grateful for all the support on this thread this year :)
