Could we have a handholding thread? I have two DCs going through UCSS at the moment, would love to obsess here so I can appear calm on the outside.
LNAT results go to the UNIs tomorrow I think, so offers could be rolling in soon for DD who has applied for law.

Mine just told me exactly how long he has to choose his firm and back up choices

I just had a similar convo with DD. They've got until sometime in May, she's planning to to it mid March after her visit to Cambridge.

titchy · 25/02/2017 16:59

It's not a rumour it's a new option (well it's always been an option but the fees cap didn't reflect it). It means instead of finishing in May each year students carry on studying straight through the summer. It might be attractive to alternative providers and maybe some vocational courses at the post-92s. The research intensives won't do it.

A degree will still require the same number of study hours, it isn't being reduced.

atheistmantis · 25/02/2017 17:14

Ds is going to do it soon, he's made his decision. We think it's probably the right one., we'll sort of.

tobee · 25/02/2017 17:16

It was a rumour until it was announced by minister Jo Johnson yesterday I thought. My comment was that I think universities are feeling much more uncertain about their futures, certainly more than they were for dd 4 years ago and, so I've heard of lots of friends dc getting surprising offers etc. It's not that long ago since fees came in in the first place.

EnormousTiger · 25/02/2017 17:17

You can do 2 year degrees at private Buckingham I think and also 2 year law degrees at BPP in London too which do suit some people. not much holiday however and a lot of very hard work.

HSMMaCM · 25/02/2017 18:17

We have offer visit days in march and April, so dd will make her decision after the second one.

Study went completely to pot over half term, while she practiced driving her car to visit every friend she's ever known.

Waitingforsherlock · 25/02/2017 21:06

An update- an offer yesterday for economics and maths at Edinburgh. So thrilled for ds and relieved too. Offer for the alternative course at Durham too. Still waiting on application number four, but the pressure has gone now and hopefully he can feel that he can do some planning for September now. Thanks to all those who have posted about this- I really appreciate it; you gave me great comfort.

Needmoresleep · 25/02/2017 21:08

Yay!!!

Congratulations to your DS, and to the mum.

LittleHo · 25/02/2017 21:08

Smile Fantastic news.

atheistmantis · 25/02/2017 21:11

Yay, great news :)

goodbyestranger · 25/02/2017 21:18

I'm so so pleased sherlock - well done to DS!

hellsbells99 · 25/02/2017 21:54

Excellent news Sherlock!

BehindTheBlueDoor · 25/02/2017 22:37

Really good news. Relax and breathe....Smile

ErrolTheDragon · 25/02/2017 22:39

Oh phew!Grin

namechange7711 · 26/02/2017 11:36

Oh what a relief Sherlock. Presumably as he's got his grades, the offers are unconditional? So that's a great position to be in.

Really hope ohtobeskiiing's DD gets something sorted soon too.

DS1 went on an Applicant Day by himself on Friday/Saturday. Both trains were delayed by over an hour, so a bit of a mammoth trip to get there. He liked the city/university, but not 100% sure about the course. The Applicant Day for the university he thinks will be his first choice isn't until 22 April, so he'll then only have a few days to make a decision on firm/insurance. I really hope the system doesn't crash in the final few days with everyone hurrying to push the button!!

Lewis1962 · 26/02/2017 12:15

Ds has had an email from his first choice saying that he will be receiving an offer but if he comes along to an applicant's day and has an interview they may then reduce it from the standard offer. Anyone else had this?

ErrolTheDragon · 26/02/2017 12:19

The deadline for replying to offers is may 4th so he'll have well over a week - and the UCAS system must have been designed to cope with surges!

Ohtobeskiing · 27/02/2017 09:51

Thank you for the kind words and suggestions. Dd has had a think over the weekend and has decided to have a change of tack. The ultimate ambition remains the same but she is going to play the long game and apply for English Language.

Waitingforsherlock · 27/02/2017 13:13

Hi ohtobeskiing. Sounds great that your daughter is taking the long game into consideration. I assume that she will be having a gap year now. I really hadn't realised how important things like work experience and the like are. Are ther ways she could get some of this in during now and the next application cycle? She could then talk about it on her PS. Sorry if I am teaching my granny to suck eggs but I knew nothing about UCAS etc since this rather stressful crash-course I am currently going through.

Good luck to your dd. English Language is such an interesting subject.

IWillGoToTheBall · 01/03/2017 13:44

Hi, has anyone heard from any of the Scottish universities? My dd is still waiting for offers from Dundee and Strathclyde. Thanks

Stopyourhavering · 01/03/2017 17:47

My ds heard from Dundee about 3 weeks ago....he'd been rejected from 1 course at the uni about 3 weeks previously ( not long after after he'd submitted UCAS and just before deadline!!), so he wasn't holding out much hope tbh
However he got his first choice course ( v niche Science course, so he's delighted) and has now firmed it....hopefully you'll hear soon. my dd also went to Dundee 4 yrs ago and didn't hear till end of Feb for an Arts course

readsalotgirl63 · 01/03/2017 19:37

DD heard from Dundee couple of weeks ago and from Strathclyde on Friday. Will go to both applicant days and then decide. Hope your dd hears soon - it's very nerve wracking

IWillGoToTheBall · 01/03/2017 20:57

Ohhh - good news readsalot and havering. Can I ask what their offers are?

IWillGoToTheBall · 01/03/2017 20:58

...... sorry, one more question! Are the info packs sent by email or post just so I can stop barking at the postman

Stopyourhavering · 01/03/2017 22:50

Ds offer is BCC, he's doing Biology Physics and Geography A levels( needs B in biology)...also doing EPQ in Geography and Welsh Bac
Dd's offer for Philosophy 4 yrs ago was BCC but in fact she got 3Cs and a D!( we live in Wales so that may have been in her favour!)
She graduated MA 2:1 in this summer and now doing MSc at Edinburgh....not bad for a girl with dyslexia who was told by SENCO at first secondary school she'd be luck to get a handful of GCSEs!Shock
The pack came a few weeks after she'd firmed her offer I seem to remember, once she'd applied for finance, so she could then apply for accommodation
Good luck with the offers and hope you hear soon
