Could we have a handholding thread? I have two DCs going through UCSS at the moment, would love to obsess here so I can appear calm on the outside.
LNAT results go to the UNIs tomorrow I think, so offers could be rolling in soon for DD who has applied for law.

Ds hasn't even written his ps yet!!.... However he does know which courses he wants to apply to which I guess is something!! ( waiting for predicted grades for Biology ,Physics and Geography...he's also doing EPQ for Geography and Welsh Bac, so hopefully will get offers for Forensic Anthropology which is a rather niche course!)

Another Oxbridge applicant here. She ended up submitting without even telling me and then announced calmly that she had offers a few weeks ago Grin

AAA/A*AB from Warwick and York - apparently both of their English literature departments are very quick. Also hear maths are quick at Warwick and my niece has an interview from York for physics already.

DD has also applied to Cambridge, UCL, and St Andrew's all for English lit and from what I can gauge UCL's the favourite...

Good luck to all!! And to those who haven't started yet - lots of DD's friends are intending to start applications over this half term. They have until mid January I think so can take their time.

Another applying but only just done so here. She had her head in the sand till September , so we didn't even do RH open day till last weekend !

I'm feeling a bit at sea. This is dc3 but the other were so sorted in their plans.

Liberal arts - Durham Leeds Bristol KCL AND RH I believe.

We'll see.

Ds2 has almost finished his personal statement and has picked his five universities. He just needs his form tutor to agree his PS and then he is ready to go! Unfortunately the course interviews everywhere (healthcare related) so no quick offers for him.

I am in a whole new world with the universities he has picked as Ds1 is at a very good RG place but ds2's course is pretty much only taught at newer universities so open days have been quite interesting.

Good thread Carrie! I'd taken to lurking on the Student Rooms forums!
Another physics/ maths DS here, has applied for MPhys at Manchester, Birmingham, Imperial and Oxford with Surrey as insurance.
Has had offers from Surrey (AAB I think) and Birmingham (AAA)
Roundandround, DS has got interview at Manchester end of November, but only notified of this last week, hope your DS has heard by now ( the Brian Cox effect eh?)
He's prepping for the PAT at the moment.

I am optimistically posting in here, ds has just paid and submitted his application, now the college need to do their bit, I am not sure how long that will take with it being half term.

He has only put in three choices, it is a bit of a risk but he is relatively confident that he will get at least two offers.

Carrie, I have double trouble too this year.... or double delight. They are not applying to Oxbridge (although the school suggested it (they got AAAA at AS) and although their UCAS forms are just about finished they are going to submit them immediately after half term when various teachers at school have been through them (so no offers yet).

They will almost certainly apply to places like Bristol, Durham, Exeter, St Andrew's, Nottingham

DS has applied for Maths so will take the MAT for Imperial and Durham's new UAT next month and then STEP after A2 for Cambridge. Also applied for Warwick and Nottingham.

Lots of hoops for our kids to jump through these days. We aren't expecting any offers for a while...

Glad to see a thread for our guys, I've been reading last year's for advice and sanity!
DS has had offers for Computer Science from Birmingham, Warwick and Bath. We're waiting for offers from Cambridge and Durham. It's been an interesting ride so far, He had AABC at AS remarked to AABB with medical extenuating circumstances at the beginning of the AS year. Cambridge is local but an extremely outside chance and he has set his heart on Brimingham. Struggling with my role as mum, do I enthusiastically accept the choice he makes or gently encourage him towards 'higher placed' universities? I didn't go to uni and I'm desperate not to let him down through a lack of knowledge.

I'm not exactly experienced but I doubt he'd go far wrong with Birmingham, isn't it quite well regarded? I've got no idea about the others though.

Birmingham is fine. I would say it was only slightly below say Oxbridge, LSE, Durham etc. if it's the course he wants not many are going to be crossing him off an employer's list because it's Birmingham (although without doubt Cambridge and Durham are better and he may get offers from those).

Birmingham is a good solid redbrick RG. Ive just looked in the Times Good University Guide at the CS and any of those should be fine. Theres more to a uni than the league tables anyway - if they've been to an open day and got very positive or negative feelings about the place (course, campus, accommodation etc) then that feeds into the decision too.

Thank you Enolagay, Me2017 and Coconutty, I can start to reel back the stress levels to something more manageable now!
It would help a lot if DS would show at least a passing interest but he's more of a 'let's see how it falls' kind of person!
His worst case scenario was no offers, his second worst was 5 offers. :/
Good luck everyone.

Thanks Errol, I'm going to (try to) step back and follow his lead.

Ds was told he'd get unconditional from Birmingham for English but they don't do them for psychology, he's adamant he wants psychology though.

Maths is not a particularly over-subscribed subject. If he has the right predicted grades, he should get an offer from Warwick quite quickly. He will also get an offer from Nottingham quickly.

DS is also applying for MMaths and will be doing MAT and STEP.

He has received an offer from Warwick already but it is AAA (or AA*A with STEP). He has also applied to Oxford, Bristol, Exeter and Soton.

Worried about the pressure he will be under with no scope to slip at all. (Warwick is likely to be his first choice assuming he doesn't receive an offer from Oxford).

Report
pericat · 24/10/2016 22:28

Sorry that should be AAA* from Warwick.

I don't think theres any way to use more than one asterisk in a post without it bolding (on the app, it may display in the browser) which is a bit of a pita on threads like these.

Report
ErrolTheDragon · 24/10/2016 23:10

Wow though, I didn't know anywhere asked for 3A* for anything. Presumably the others (bar oxford) wont be quite that steep, though I suppose good maths courses do want top grades in maths and further maths?

Good luck to all of you this year, I was in your position last year and will be again next year.

DS1 was MPhys and heard back very quickly with interviews/offers.

Apparently the standard offer for Maths from Oxford is 2A*A so less than Warwick.

I can see we will have a stressful time until August!

Report
Me2017 · 25/10/2016 08:01

I will make sure we are long back from summer holiday by the August results day (we had to find an internet hotel room on a remote island in Panama for one older child to go on line and make calls to clearing 10 years ago and I had to call from a call box to school to obtain my A level results on a family holiday in Scotland. Much easier to be home. We will go on holiday as soon as school breaks up in mid July. One of mine has Edinburgh and his twin St Andrews. They also have the issue of whether they would go to the same university as their twins (I suspect Bristol and Durham are their top preferences). I don't think it would matter and they could keep out of each other's way and it would certainly make driving them there with their stuff a lot easier.
