Uni offers for 2017 start

Could we have a handholding thread? I have two DCs going through UCSS at the moment, would love to obsess here so I can appear calm on the outside.
LNAT results go to the UNIs tomorrow I think, so offers could be rolling in soon for DD who has applied for law.

Bath and Durham usually wait till alll applications are in before offering so don't worry (easier said than done!) Warwick is far more competitive for economics than any of the other choices so no point adding them as a fifth!

Agree to just wait a bit longer, a few more weeks, then phone before applying as it will count as a late app.

namechange7711 · 14/02/2017 16:21

Hurrah! DS got an offer from the final university he was waiting for. The application went in before Christmas, so it's taken about 8 weeks.

Now just the pesky matter of actually getting the grades....

EnormousTiger · 14/02/2017 16:43

Well done name.... My 2 have not heard from Edinburgh but with Durham and Bristol offers it's not really in the running now any way. I think currently they may be plumping for Bristol over Durham but it's a very difficult choice (and all conditional on getting the grades too of course A*AA and AAB for each twin respectively - which might well mean the one who has to get the higher grades ends up with whatever is his back up choice come August).

honeyroar · 14/02/2017 22:18

There doesn't seem to be any logic to it, does there! My DSS has firm offers at St Andrews and Edinburgh, didn't have an interview for either, but hasn't heard back from UCL or Imperial (has had an interview at Imperial). Also has a firm offer for York, but doesn't want it. He's doing Chemistry and had AAA* at A level. Think he's going for St Andrews.

AmazingDisgrace · 16/02/2017 17:36

Finally! DS1 received an offer from UCL. That was a long 4 month wait...

EnormousTiger · 16/02/2017 17:45

I hope they all know when acceptances have to be in by as mine won't tell me.

Waitingforsherlock · 16/02/2017 17:52

Congratulations Amazing whoever guessed that this process could be so difficult for our dc's?

EnormousTiger · 16/02/2017 17:54

Ah one of the twins has just wandered in and has heard today from his 5th Edinburgh ABB (lowest offer of any of the five including Durham Bristol Exeter and Nottingham which is interesting). Apparently he will choose in very early May around the time of the deadline which seems a bit risky to me. His twin has not yet heard from Edinburgh. I hope they will accept places and choose in April rather than at the last minute.

namechange7711 · 16/02/2017 18:21

The UCAS deadline to make firm & insurance choices is 4 May. DS has an Applicant Day on 22 April, so will need to make his decision after that (during the week when he has his A2 mocks, oh joy).

Not quite sure what happens about uni accommodation. Does anyone know if you're supposed to apply for accommodation at both the firm & insurance choice, or just the firm?

Needmoresleep · 16/02/2017 18:35

Sherlock, any news? Fingers are crossed. I am sure it will be fine.

Namechange. It depends on University. They all have their own approaches.

Waitingforsherlock · 16/02/2017 18:48

Thanks for asking Needmoresleep, nothing but the St Andrews rejection at the moment. All of his friends on gap years have offers as do other close family members so he is feeling very miserable and directionless at the moment, poor thing.

Congratulations to all those who have heard- it must be such a relief.

stonecircle · 16/02/2017 18:55

Accommodation at Nottingham (a possible firm/insurance for DS) opens on 1 March and is allocated on a first come first served basis. But DS is still waiting to hear from Southampton (also a possible firm/assurance). I don't want him to wait for Southampton and miss out on his preferred accommodation at Nottingham.

I wish they'd hurry up!

I know some universities guarantee accommodation just for those who firm, and others guarantee it for insurance too. Not sure if, in that case, you apply for accommodation at insurance too?

ByTheSea · 16/02/2017 19:29

So pleased to say DD got offers from Edinburgh and St Andrews. They came whilst we were at the Exeter offer day yesterday. Edinburgh is the lowest of the offers at ABB and even St Andrews offer of AAB (with A in Latin) is lower than her AAA predicted grades. So pleased for her.

Pipkinhartley · 16/02/2017 20:08

Hi Amazingdisgrace, another UCL offer here for physics and maths, Not such a long wait as interview was 3 weeks ago but very pleased! Now to sort out the accommodation applications!

EnormousTiger · 16/02/2017 21:37

By, why is Edinburgh only ABB (same for my son) so much less than the others? I wonder if fewer people are applying there? It certainly puzzled us.

Good point above about deadlines for acceptances. i think my two will choose Bristol over Durham but are not sure and think delaying with help that - one has an offer holders day at Bristol i think in March.

I remember by daughters applying fairly early for accommodation and for Bristol helping one who had a form to fill in about why she woudl be good for her particular chosen hall - eg she was in the sixth form chamber choir and the halls had a choir so she went on about her likely contribution to that (she got in but never did attend the choir in the end I think.....)

EnormousTiger · 16/02/2017 21:38

I just looked up 1 June day you can start applying for Bristol accommodation by the way although other people should check too as I'd hate someone to rely on me and I got it wrong.

ByTheSea · 17/02/2017 06:15

EnormousTiger we have no idea why Edinburgh came in so low unless they really want ours even if they have some bad exam days. DD really likes the course there.

Peaceandl0ve · 17/02/2017 07:21

Last year my DD did her accom application for Bristol in June, the uni doesnt allocate rooms until after results day if my memory serves me.

jeanne16 · 17/02/2017 08:00

Edinburgh always give really low offers to English students. They obviously want the fees!

EnormousTiger · 17/02/2017 08:02

Thanks, Peace. My daughter was there about 13 years ago so it may well have changed too. She got a reserved place (for accommodation) at her first choice for accommodation and I drove her there on day 1 without our knowing where she would be staying - proper room or some kind of temporary PhD person's room at the same place whilst she waited to see if someone left. Luckily as we had been told usually 4 or 5 teenagers back out after accepting places to do gap years, have break downs or whatever so when we arrived they said she had a proper room at the halls and it was all fine. It sounds ilke start of June is when applications open (and probably better to get in early in June).

Pipkinhartley · 17/02/2017 16:03

Doh, Offer is for ICL, not UCL, physics and maths at Imperial.

atheistmantis · 18/02/2017 15:35

We heard the 1st of June for Bristol accommodation as well; DS is on the verge of firming Bristol.

BoboChic · 18/02/2017 16:24

"Edinburgh always give really low offers to English students. They obviously want the fees!"

That would make sense.

EnormousTiger · 18/02/2017 16:33

I think my 2 will pick Bristol for first choice but not until after one has a visit there in late March. He will probably go for Nottingham for back up as Exeter gave a rather ungenerous (in his view) AAA offer which is perhaps a bit dangerous for a back up he thinks in case he gets a B.

1st was the date I saw yesterday for opening of Bristol accommodation applications.

Needmoresleep · 18/02/2017 16:44

DD will also be going to Bristol in September. MN meet up might be on the cards, except we forgot to check and have booked a holiday coinciding with the start of term. She will have to go by train with a suitcase and her sports kit, with us bringing the rest later. She sees this as another example of our poor parenting.

The good thing is she will then have a better idea what she needs.
