Could we have a handholding thread? I have two DCs going through UCSS at the moment, would love to obsess here so I can appear calm on the outside.
LNAT results go to the UNIs tomorrow I think, so offers could be rolling in soon for DD who has applied for law.

DS has final offer in from Leeds some couple of weeks ago. But still nothing from them re applicant day. Just an accommodation day 😏 at end of March but train tickets are few at reasonable prices, then they jump up by about £100! Come on Leeds! Don't want to go twice.

stonecircle · 22/02/2017 15:58

I hadn't realised so many universities keep students hanging for so long. Two years ago, DS2 had all his offers in before Xmas. DS3 only had his final two offers yesterday. Cutting it fine as some universities are taking 'first come first served' accommodation applications from 1 March.

atheistmantis · 22/02/2017 15:59

That's good stranger, low or low for Bristol ?

dingit · 22/02/2017 16:00

Is anyone else waiting for Bath? Dd is waiting now to firm and insure. Accommodation applications open 1st March for Surrey. She can't apply until firmed. Luckily it's not first come first served.

stonecircle · 22/02/2017 16:48

Bath was one of the first to respond to DS - well before Xmas. For physics though.

LittleHo · 22/02/2017 16:53

Same as stonecircle for Bath.

Waitingforsherlock · 23/02/2017 17:29

Rejection from Durham for Economics but may be considered for Finance at the Stockton on Tees campus. Any experience or knowledge about this sort of thing please?

titchy · 23/02/2017 18:09

Dd got a Bath offer last week dingit. Biosci.

User006point5 · 23/02/2017 18:31

DS got his engineering offer last week, too, so I would think you will hear soon. (Has DD checked the UCAS website, in case she got an email that was mistaken for spam?)

BehindTheBlueDoor · 23/02/2017 18:33

Rejection from St A here too and one deflated and confused DS. Predicted grades above those for their standard offer and above those he has heard of who have received offers. Thought his PS and refs were good too. One silver lining, no nightmare 9 hour journeys and 5 years of fees. Disappointing though, but he has written requesting some specific feedback so he knows why.
All other offers the same grades: A star, A, A so hope he makes those and the right choice of firm and insurance.

Waitingforsherlock · 23/02/2017 18:54

Which subject Behind? My ds ( economics) was rejected by St A with A*AA in the bag. Hope that makes your ds feel better. Rejected by Durham today too and no offers so you can imagine the mood in this house tonight. I just feel so sorry for him.

BehindTheBlueDoor · 23/02/2017 19:13

That's tough Sherlock. V good actual grades and still no offer. I do wonder what do they have to do these days. Economics is very competitive I know, but what do they want? My ds has applied for physics/astrophysics depending on the courses offered. I hope you have good news soon.

Waitingforsherlock · 23/02/2017 19:23

Thanks Behindthebluedoor. I hope that your ds is ok too. It's very tough for dc's these days I think.

atheistmantis · 23/02/2017 19:27

Sorry to hear about the rejections :(

goodbyestranger · 23/02/2017 19:59

sherlock I'm so sorry for your poor DS. His grades are easily good enough - is there a problem with the reference or personal statement do you think? Or did he simply put his application in too late? In other words is another shot next year worth thinking about? But as far as Queen's Campus goes I honestly don't think it would be a wise move - it's in the process of closing down and is a long, long way from Durham. Seriously, with those grades he deserves a much better offer and should hold out for one. Fingers crossed for his other choices.

User006point5 · 23/02/2017 20:00

Yes, awful to be rejected with such great grades.

Waitingforsherlock · 23/02/2017 20:38

Thank you all. He hasn't seen his reference but was told by school that it was very strong. PS was checked by school too. St A rejection was over two weeks ago so pretty definitive. Application went in around the beginning of December so knowing what I now know( aah hindsight), I guess that is quite late. I wonder if they 'run out' of offers by this stage perhaps? I really don't know.

goodbyestranger · 23/02/2017 20:49

sherlock it might be a good idea to pay ten quid to get the school reference from UCAS. As far as I remember he has to phone up himself and request it, and they send it to his registered e-mail address. Something sounds just a bit not right and it's worth ruling out all possibilities.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/02/2017 20:51

Blimey, thats tough. SadI suppose because he has good grades, all his choices were in line with them rather than thinking in terms of 'insurance' - it does seem as though he's had very bad luck.

Waitingforsherlock · 23/02/2017 20:51

Thanks goodbyestranger I will suggest that to him.

Waitingforsherlock · 23/02/2017 20:52

Exactly Errol

atheistmantis · 23/02/2017 22:38

It just doesn't make sense, it's certainly worth getting the school reference unless he's going to be struggling to deal with it if it's not good; I mean he has to study there for a few months longer. I can't see why a school would give a poor reference to such a good student though :(

Waitingforsherlock · 23/02/2017 22:59

He isn't studying there anymore as on a gap year, so that's not an issue. He has great trust in his tutor and so he is hoping its not that. Wondering if PS has let him down. However, I think it may be the sheer volume of applicants. Such a shame though; he went into the process relatively confident and now that confidence is pretty much shattered. Hugely competitive process I think.

Needmoresleep · 24/02/2017 09:04

Sherlock, this really was us three years ago. One rejection, and an offer from a fifth choice he no longer wanted to go to.

Nothing then came through till mid March, with two further rejections and one offer.

It was very hard, not least because these kids have often not faced rejection before. And we had not expected it. (DS was taking five A levels, was predicted A* in four of them, and had the equivalent on an AS in a European language. Economics is surprisingly brutal.)

Both Bath and Edinburgh will have lots of EU and international students who they will have to evaluate. It is more than possible that you will have to wait three or four more weeks.

Finance is different from economics, and Stockton is different from Durham. Depending on what he wants to do after graduation, there can be some advantage in graduating with a University of Durham degree. However it also needs to be somewhere he wants to live and a course he wants to take. Without knowing him my guess is that he might be better off approaching established Universities like Birmingham, York and Nottingham and seeing if they would entertain a late application.

But again, he ought to be an attractive candidate with an achieved A* in maths.

You only need one place,. no news is good news etc....hang on in there.

TwitterQueen1 · 24/02/2017 09:10

Sherlock - he can still go through clearing can't he? What were his other choices? It's very hard for him - with those grades he deserves good offers.

Another one saying no to Stockton. I don't believe it would the best uni experience - I can't comment on the course.
