Could we have a handholding thread? I have two DCs going through UCSS at the moment, would love to obsess here so I can appear calm on the outside.
LNAT results go to the UNIs tomorrow I think, so offers could be rolling in soon for DD who has applied for law.

It's not just that Stockton is a different campus, it's that it's in the process of shutting down. Lots of subjects have transferred already. so I imagine it could be dire.

sherlock I didn't mean that the school reference would have been double dealing, more that if he gets access to it he has a complete picture of what the application looks like to unis. Was he at an independent school and if so was it a very high achieving school? What was his order of preference, in other words does he still have his favourite choice left in the fray? (Sorry if you've posted this earlier).

BehindTheBlueDoor · 24/02/2017 10:26

UCAS Extra opens tomorrow Sherlock. It may not be what your DS needs just yet but it's available until mid July. Can't believe he won't get any good news from his remaining choices with those grades so hold your nerve for now. Hoping good news is on its way.

Waitingforsherlock · 24/02/2017 11:46

Thank you all for your lovely support. I am passing on all your comments to my ds. I had not realised the process could be this brutal. When they are going through this you can see that although they look like adults on the outside, they are still very vulnerable. I am hanging on in there on his behalf and supporting him the best I can

Thank you all again.

Ohtobeskiing · 24/02/2017 16:17

Well, that's that for this year. Dd has now been rejected by all her choices.

atheistmantis · 24/02/2017 16:33

Oh no :( as somebody else said, extra starts tomorrow so she can have a look there ?

Ohtobeskiing · 24/02/2017 17:00

I'm not sure. The course she wants to do is very competitive and there aren't really any alternatives.

atheistmantis · 24/02/2017 18:30

What is she hoping to study ?

ErrolTheDragon · 24/02/2017 18:46

Is it one of those things like vet or medicine where its so common for that to happen that a year getting relevant experience and reapplying is quite normal?

LittleHo · 24/02/2017 19:06

Could they apply again through Extra (Ucas)?

Ohtobeskiing · 25/02/2017 09:44

She wants to study speech and language therapy. She is looking at Extra to see if she can add any more choices. The course isn't often in clearing but never say never! She is currently on a gap year and has some really good experience under her belt but if she needs another year then so be it.

Ohtobeskiing · 25/02/2017 11:46

Thanks hellsbells99 she is looking at her options.

goodbyestranger · 25/02/2017 11:51

I'm surprised that Cambridge has so many courses on offer in Extra....

atheistmantis · 25/02/2017 12:11

If a uni has places in extra then does that mean that the course is undersubscribed ?

goodbyestranger · 25/02/2017 12:23

No idea atheistmantis but if that's the case then Cambridge had a bad year recruiting :)

I guess anyone with an offer elsewhere could decline and try their luck....

Ohtobeskiing · 25/02/2017 12:25

No it doesn't mean they are undersubscribed. One of the courses dd applied for had over 400 applicants for 4 places and yet it is showing in extra!

ErrolTheDragon · 25/02/2017 12:32

Maybe its a 'broadening access' strategy?

Eve · 25/02/2017 12:42

DS has now got all his offers through, he's looking at construction Mgt, quantity surveying type courses.

Loughborough and oxford Brooke's are his preferred choice. Just got to get the grades now!

rightsaidfrederickII · 25/02/2017 13:14

The way UCAS Extra works is that all courses are automatically listed as being in Extra by UCAS, unless the university has proactively told UCAS that the course is full. This is rarely something at the top of the admissions team's to do list. You can be pretty confident that Cambridge is not still accepting offers four months after their deadline...

If your DC does want to apply to a course in Extra then it's very wise to ring up the admissions department (not the academic department, who often haven't got a clue) before and just double check that the course does still have places available.

atheistmantis · 25/02/2017 13:25

Thanks, now it makes sense. I was surprised at the number of courses that Bristol had listed.

atheistmantis · 25/02/2017 13:28

I'm just looking at the UCAS stats, there are some 30 thousand less applicants this year than last - it's back to the levels of 4 years ago.

goodbyestranger · 25/02/2017 13:52

No I didn't seriously think Cambridge was wide open rightsaidfrederick. Plenty of the very competitive unis/ courses don't appear though, so clearly some uni admissions departments bother - which is rather more helpful to applicants eligible for Extra than those who take the ever-so-busy approach. It seems a bit slack and it would probably be quicker to let UCAS know than fend off lots of anxious phone calls, because the more attractive the course the more likely it is that applicants will phone.

tobee · 25/02/2017 15:25

Fwiw I think our dc have got a very funny year with applications which is very unfortunate. For a start the changes to AS and A2 especially as it only effects some subjects, the referendum vote causing uncertainty for universities, the rumour about cutting back degree courses to 2 years (now looking more likely but still expensive), fees going up, the economy still uncertain and applications from non eu countries heavily down. Doesn't help at all but still!

EnormousTiger · 25/02/2017 15:44

Mine just told me exactly how long he has to choose his firm and back up choices. I would be getting it done ASAP rather than waiting until the last minute. If they wait they might find on the last week the systems are down or something. Anyway it looks like one twin may now after all visit Bristol when his twin and friends go but he's left it so left the rail fares are very expensive so his friend who apparently has already driving to Sheffield so has driven on a mtorway before will drive him. I bet they'd have had a nicer day with the other boys on the trains however. More relaxed.

atheist, my feeling is fewer applicants this year too and that my twins are having a slightly easier time than their older siblings. Eg their science A level second sister was rejected by Durham and Bristol in her day and her GCSEs were at least as good as the twins are and yet this year the twins have had offers from those. Not that I wil suggest to the twins it may be silghtly easier this year. Also the change so that universities could offer as many places as they liked to people getting AAB must have made a difference too over the last few years for those universities with enough physical space to take extra people.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/02/2017 16:36

the rumour about cutting back degree courses to 2 years (now looking more likely but still expensive)

That won't be affecting our lot though - and tbh I wouldn't have thought that many universities would want to go that way, esp not ones which do a lot of research.
