Could we have a handholding thread? I have two DCs going through UCSS at the moment, would love to obsess here so I can appear calm on the outside.
LNAT results go to the UNIs tomorrow I think, so offers could be rolling in soon for DD who has applied for law.

Still heard nothing here... Waiting for Durham, Bath, St A and Edinburgh. On a gap year so has already done A Levels, applied for Economics. What was the offer from Durham for EnormousTiger please, if you don't mind me prying...

jeanne16 · 18/01/2017 08:23

Error. May I ask what her Cambridge offer is?

jeanne16 · 18/01/2017 08:24

Not Error, I meant Errol!

titchy · 18/01/2017 09:20

Still waiting for Bath too. But have Exeter in the bag so happy!

EnormousTiger · 18/01/2017 12:58

Durham off yesterday was geography A* AA.

I am finding it hard to remember their other offers now,. Eg the other who has a Bristol offer, although I probably posted it earlier on the thread. It would have been a bit easier grades as ancient history tends to be a bit easier to get in with.

Waiting, economics is really interesting and good subject. My 2 liked maths as did I but have not done maths A level but both got A in AS economics and one is carrying that on to A2 (but not at university). I do quite a bit of economics in my area of law actually and I think it's reall interesting. A good university choice. 2 of their older siblings also did economics at AS possibly A2 (can't remember now - too many children)

ErrolTheDragon · 18/01/2017 13:29

Jeanne - I mentioned it further down, A* in physics and FM , A in maths. She said someone with an offer from the college she applied to, Pembroke, who was also doing chemistry has to get 3 A stars inc phys and fm and an A so she's glad she stopped comp sci at AS!

Carriemac · 18/01/2017 13:36

To update as the OP, DD has an oxford offer (3As) and DS is still awaiting Durham but happy with his 4 other offers .
It's been stressful few months but we are delighted with how they have both fared.good luck to all those still waiting, what IS Durham doing that takes so long to offer?...

JugglingFromHereToThere · 19/01/2017 18:30

A 3 A's offer from Oxford sounds quite generous Carrie. Well done to your DD for that - they must like her?!
Glad your DS is happy too - I expect Durham will also respond soon.

Here we've got the full set with an interesting offer from Reading of 3 B's if she "firms" them, but ABB otherwise.

So, all sorts of combinations are possible depending on what she thinks of Reading and Swansea especially, on applicant days. Think we'll be visiting or re-visiting several during February, especially at half-term. She also still likes Sheffield and Uni of South Wales. So all being well maybe she'll go to one of those 4!

EnormousTiger · 19/01/2017 19:45

Carrie that's very good. One of my twins is still waiting for Durham (and, as I said above, the other just had his offer from there yesterday) so it sounds like they are just a bit slow, Neither has heard from Edinburgh and one not heard from Bristol.

(Jugg, my son went to Reading (through clearing a few years ago). It's a nice place)

I wish there were a bit more stress around here. After they now feel vindicated in not trying Oxbridge (like last year not a single boy who tried from the school got in) and avoiding that effort, they both didn't proceed with the EPQ thing and I've not noticed any university stress at all but perhaps it's all there bubbling below the surface.

Good luck to those waiting for offers.

goodbyestranger · 19/01/2017 20:11

AAA is the standard offer from Oxford for humanities, law etc. It's been kept at that level for good political reasons but it's not a reflection on applicants whatsoever, except that they've got a place after interview, pre-tests etc and therefore all credit. Even Medicine was AAA as recently as 2012 entry when DS1 got his offer for that subject although now it's crept up to A*AA.

goodbyestranger · 19/01/2017 20:13

EnormousTiger it doesn't sound to me as though your family does stress. You all sound supremely horizontal. All credit there too.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 19/01/2017 21:01

Thanks ET, we keep hearing good things about both Reading and Swansea which may be the main contenders. Reading would be nearer (which is a factor for me) but Swansea in a lovely part of the world. So DD planning to go to both applicant days and see what she thinks. Reading sounds lovely too - by the river and a lovely campus I've heard? Sheffield also very tempting for DD and nice she got an offer from them but it's quite high.

dingit · 20/01/2017 12:29

Dd got an offer from Loughborough the day after her interview. Makes me wonder what on earth Bath are doing. Don't think she's bothered now. The only problem is her offer is the same as Surrey, so isn't really an insurance choice. Not sure what to do now...

EnormousTiger · 20/01/2017 13:49

Reading is also a bit closer in our case to home (my son could drive if he wanted to from home and back if necessary - outer London). It is also a bit closer perhaps to more jobs. Not that most children stay where they go to university but it is in a bit more prosperous an area than Wales say - but I love the Welsh countryside and beaches and I am not knocking Wales in any way here. IN terms of careers I would go for what gives th ehighest offer as a general rule as they probably ge tthe better people and probably have the higher status - fairly simple economics. My twins have been using that principle when various friends suggest some kind of pretty awful low grade place is the best thing since sliced bread - look at the entry criteria. It tells it all usually.

Yes the twins seem quite relaxed although they do seem to do their work on time and they are delighted to have given up some subjects they did not like at GCSE like the dreaded French so enjoying the sixth form I think. I remember in prep school they used to try to ensure they messed up the early stages of the school poetry competition so they would not have the hassle of being put into the final (I am not suggesting these are children anyone should copy of course..... and I am lazying arond on my own in Barbuda all week feeling very relaxed)

FannyUmbongo · 20/01/2017 17:55

You guys were me last year, waiting for offers for DS to do economics.

Warwick replied stupidly quickly, with an offer within 24hrs, although several of his friends had to wait a few months so it was an erratic response.

He had offers from Bath, Nottingham, Durham and Exeter too, and went for Exeter. It was a good choice and he's very happy, but the pp who said accommodation can be a problem for those who pick it as insurance is correct. There were several people on the student room who didn't get offers of accommodation having picked it as insurance, although it appeared that all found private halls/houses quickly.

Good luck to those waiting, it's nice when you've heard back from all.

EnormousTiger · 21/01/2017 19:31

My son in Reading through clearing in his first term was found accommodation in a lady's house with another boy although he got halls by January but that was the same issue. It was a nice family he was with however so not a massive problem.

GypsyFl0ss · 22/01/2017 07:53

DS had two interviews last week for three courses at the same uni and received an email from them yesterday congratulating him on his offer but not saying which course it is for! Track is down till noon today so still waiting...

jeanne16 · 22/01/2017 19:43

Finally an offer from Durham for engineering. Woo, as my DD would say.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/01/2017 23:14

Oh, good jeanne!

CQ · 23/01/2017 15:47

Just catching up after a long break from MN over holidays and then a bout of the ubiquitous lurgies.

Interesting reading how inconsistent the offers are. DS got an offer from Cambridge - 3A*s and an A. Holy fuck. I'm teasing him that they clearly are not very sure they want him so they've set the bar very high. But that's for engineering - not even medicine is sending out offers that high, FFS. Ah well, it will keep his nose to the grindstone.

And still no offer from Newcastle - and yet they wrote to him last year, asking him to apply because of his sport. Bonkers.

EnormousTiger · 23/01/2017 18:24

Yes, offers do seem to vary even in the same institution. the A*AA for my son for Durham is fairly high. His Bristol twin's offer is AAB I think from memory

ErrolTheDragon · 23/01/2017 18:38

Congratulations to him, CQ! Was Newcastle likely to be his preferred reserve?

TwitterQueen1 · 24/01/2017 10:30

All together now...

Why are we waiting?
Whyeeee are we waiting?
Why ohoh whyeee are we waaiting.....?"

FrogPrincess · 24/01/2017 21:22

Has anyone heard from UEA for English Lit and Creative Writing?

DD has unconditional offers from Falmouth and Kent, offer from Bath Spa and she has an offer from Lancaster with an interview in March for a potential upgrade to unconditional, but no news from UEA yet!

such a long process...

jeanne16 · 24/01/2017 21:32

CA. May I ask which Cambridge College has given your DS a 3 A* offer for engineering?
