Uni offers for 2017 start

Could we have a handholding thread? I have two DCs going through UCSS at the moment, would love to obsess here so I can appear calm on the outside.
LNAT results go to the UNIs tomorrow I think, so offers could be rolling in soon for DD who has applied for law.

If he genuinely prefers St Andrews (for non-spurious reasons) then that's what he should put first. If the offer should be achievable then the insurance place is a bit irrelevant. I've seen advice which says that it can be worth putting a higher offer as second choice as they might drop the offer if it came to it - I don't know if that makes sense or not, presumably something he can discuss with his school.

MrsBernardBlack · 12/01/2017 17:42

He has offers from UCL and KCL as well, but they are the same grades as St Andrews anyway, and the courses don't have as good a reputation (rather to my surprise actually). He is also very against London unis.

I don't really know why he prefers St A's as he hasn't visited it yet (he is going up at Easter for an open day). I suppose it's me just being a bit uneasy about not having a back up, although I know his school will advise him well.

I've told him that mum and dad will not be giving him a lift up there though Smile.

amirrorimage · 12/01/2017 19:11

As long as he sees St Andrews before he firms it and imagines life there beyond the first two years It sounds a very international university which is a plus as is its excellent reputation for teaching and module options.

TheresAFlyInMySoup · 17/01/2017 11:08

So the deadline has passed - will offers come more quickly now or is it still a waiting game not sure how long my nerves can take this

BehindTheBlueDoor · 17/01/2017 11:42

New to all this too. DS has had 4 offers/replies so far but still waiting for final one and his UCAS application was submitted in October. Seems to depend on the uni and the course applied for but most respond quite quickly from our limited experience. Others may know better. Good luck to you and your DC. Hold your nerve!

EnormousTiger · 17/01/2017 12:00

We are still on 3 (for one twin) and 2 offers for the other (neither heard from Durham or Edinburgh and one not heard from Bristol) as far as I know. (All their friends , everyone who applied at their school, failed Oxbridge by the way in the school and mine are glad they didn't try as their chances would have been low. The school wanted lots to apply as no one got there last year which doesn't look good.

dingit · 17/01/2017 12:48

Anyone still waiting for Bath?

User006point5 · 17/01/2017 13:42

Hi, my DS for mech eng! He applied not so long before Xmas, but has had three other replies already. Still waiting for Bristol and Bath...

roundandroundthehouses · 17/01/2017 13:51

Dd1 (Physics/Theoretical Physics) now has:

1 rejection (Oxford)
2 offers (Bristol and Queen's, Belfast)
1 interview (Manchester) coming in Feb. She'll almost definitely get an offer from that, but it's likely to be very high.
1 still waiting (St Andrews)

She isn't too bothered about Oxford. Her preferred option is Manchester but she'll have hard choices if/when she gets a very high offer from them. She would have put Bristol (who gave her an offer she's sure she can achieve) as her insurance, but has heard that if you go there as an insurance option the accommodation is likely to be dreadful. So when she eventually hears from St A's, if it's also an achievable offer, she might put them as insurance instead. Queen's is currently at the bottom of her list, but there will be a certain amount of angst involved if she's still with current bf who is almost definitely going there.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/01/2017 13:53

DD has 4 of her offers now, the 5th one the first interview date clashed so its at the start of feb half-term, not sure she'd have gone if it was on a schoolday at this point.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/01/2017 14:10

Just realised I was The MortificadosDragon for most of the thread, I'm back to my usual name now.

aginghippy · 17/01/2017 15:41

My dd is still waiting to hear from Bristol for mechanical engineering. She had 4 other offers weeks ago and is beginning to think Bristol will reject her.

justdontevenfuckingstart · 17/01/2017 15:49

aging Bristol rejected my DD for what she wanted but accepted her for a similar degree. She got the 4 other offers too and is now very happy at Lincoln. Hope everyone gets good results.

User006point5 · 17/01/2017 15:52

Yes, that could be it! DS's offers have arrived in reverse order from how he ranked them... He doesn't seem at all interested - he just thinks what will be will be. But I'm heavily invested, ever since I discovered we had to make a significant financial contribution!

ErrolTheDragon · 17/01/2017 16:24

Don't some unis typically not send out their offers until after Oxbridge? If so, Bristol might be one of those.

TwitterQueen1 · 17/01/2017 17:20

Waiting, waiting, waiting for Durham....

AmazingDisgrace · 17/01/2017 17:46

DS1 still waiting on UCL. He applied in mid October because of the Oxbridge deadline.

User006point5 · 17/01/2017 17:49

Errol I hadn't thought of that! Well done on your DD's Cambridge offer - was reading engineering thread Smile

ErrolTheDragon · 17/01/2017 18:38

Thanks! For anyone interested in the minutiae, she was pooled to Murray Edwards and did a remarkably rapid turnaround from saying she really wouldn't want to go to a women's college to deciding it might suit her better. The offer is A* in further maths(!)and physics plus A in maths.

jeanne16 · 17/01/2017 19:21

Roundandroundthehouses. It isn't just Bristol that gives awful accommodation to insurance offers. Lots of universities do and quite a few say they can't guarantee anything. It is actually a much bigger issue than many people realise. It has got far worse since the numbers cap came off and the universities are taking far more students than they can accommodate.

EnormousTiger · 17/01/2017 19:24

The twin with 2 offers now has 3 as Durham made one today. He is really pleased (A*AA which I am not sure he'll get although he got AAAA at AS). I am very pleased. His twin hasn't hear from Durham but has a Bristol offer he should achieve and has not heard from Durham so it's a bit inconsistent but rather nice one has a Durham offer and the other Bristol as they are both their top choices so it couldn't be better (as long as they get the grades). I feel like they are both sorted now even if they don't get Durham/Bristol offers in addition if you see what I mean. I was not keen on Edinburgh because I'd had to pay for 4 years and it delays your career by a year but they both still wait for that too. It's also quite a long way and expensive to get to although if they choose that that's fine with me too.

Errol my sister went to an all female Oxbridge college and it worked out fine. There are loads of things you can do which are mixed sex outside of that that sometimes it's quite peaceful not to have men around all the time actually although I accept teenagers may not appreciate that.

roundandroundthehouses · 17/01/2017 19:27

jeanne, I suppose that makes sense. It's a real concern for dc who are likely to get a high offer from their aspirational unis.

Leeds2 · 17/01/2017 19:44

Fwiw, I know a few who accepted Exeter as their insurance last year, and ended up in poor accommodation choices. from speaking to a mum of a DS for whom Exeter was first choice, she says that they just don't have enough available.

EnormousTiger · 17/01/2017 19:52

I heard Exeter has accommodation problems too. My Durham (if he doesn't get an offer from Bristol and if he does does not accept it) one might make Exeter his back up. Their older sister had Durham and Bristol offers and chose Bristol a few years ago.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/01/2017 20:22

Tiger - engineering is still male-dominated so we're not worried on that score!
