Could we have a handholding thread? I have two DCs going through UCSS at the moment, would love to obsess here so I can appear calm on the outside.
LNAT results go to the UNIs tomorrow I think, so offers could be rolling in soon for DD who has applied for law.

DS is very happy to have received offers in his two preferred courses; he's firmed and insured and now we're on to looking at accommodation. I'm going to have an empty nest soon Sad

EnormousTiger · 25/01/2017 07:47

Mine both now have Bristol offers - one got his ages ago last year and the other yesterday (for him it's the same as his Durham offer A*AA - so he will be choosing between Bristol and Durham as first choice as his oldest sister did a good while back - she picked Bristol). Both still await Edinburgh but it is not a high preference choice for them. One awaits a Durham offer.

As A*AA may be hard to get he will need to pick him back up choice carefully. Probably Exeter or Nottingham.

But that's for engineering - not even medicine is sending out offers that high, FFS.

Offers are considerably higher for maths, physics and engineering than for medicine. The latter does not select primarily on academic grades. Medicine of course requires good academic grades, but higher grades than required won't particularly help you get an offer.

It's not unusual for maths, physics and engineering to offer based on 4 A levels and require more than 2 A stars. Cambridge aren't the only ones who do this. Imperial sometimes give high offers too.

A stars are more consistently awarded in maths and science than in other subjects, though, and an A star in maths is not so hard for a strong student taking maths and FM.

(And my son's two AAA offers are Durham and Bristol and both my twins did 4 AS (AAAA grades proud mother restates....) and just three AS. I agree about A above and am not at all sure my son will get one so his second choice back up is going to be an important university to choose).

FrogPrincess · 27/01/2017 14:11

remind your children to check their spam box regularly....... DD was sent an email from UEA saying she had got through the first round and could she now send her portfolio, in early December, but never actually saw the email which must have gone straight to spam! She only knows this because she got an email yesterday reminding her they were waiting for the portfolio, lucky for her UEA admissions are nice!

EnormousTiger · 28/01/2017 21:08

And to check open day times. One of my sons just looked up the Bristol open days and thought there would be seeveral. There was only one and it was 2 days ago. I am sure he could arrange an individual visit if he wanted but I did say go and have a look at any others now you might want to go to in case you miss another one. Some of my older children didn't bother to go to any of them but I think it's a good idea at least to have seen the place where you might spend 3 years.

goodbyestranger · 29/01/2017 09:02

EnormousTiger are you sure that's correct? My DS is going to on a general Bristol Offer Holder's Day on Feb 22nd and I'm reasonably sure that wasn't the latest one offered.

goodbyestranger · 29/01/2017 09:04

And Durham doesn't do theirs until March after term ends because they provide accommodation, so he hasn't missed that one.

ByTheSea · 29/01/2017 09:49

DD is still waiting to hear from St Andrews and Edinburgh for Classics. Anyone else still waiting for these too?

BehindTheBlueDoor · 29/01/2017 11:27

Still waiting for St A here too for Physics (drumming fingers) .

EnormousTiger · 29/01/2017 13:40

By, my classics one (ancient history) is awaiting for Edinburgh (as is his twin for his subject - in fact his twin said Edinburgh might be his back up choice rather than Exeter if he gets an offer from Edinburgh although that might be a bit high for a back up)....

I will check again with them over the open days. i have not looked myself and left it entirely up to them which is what I did with the older children too.

MrsBernardBlack · 29/01/2017 13:44

DS had an offer for Classics at StAndrews before Christmas. It might be worth chasing up/checking spam folders etc.

EnormousTiger · 29/01/2017 13:51

..update - I just went upstairs to check with him - he logged on and Bristol still just shows on his page that one already passed visit day. We did a general search for his dept. offer days there and there are several later ones but they are not yet showing on his page to click to attend so we are going to wait a week. His twin seems not to want to visit anywhere which is fine too.

ByTheSea · 29/01/2017 18:53

Thanks. We have booked open days at Exeter and Newcastle but were hoping a bit to be able to combine trips if at all possible. For now, we'll just move on with those. She is fine -it is me who gets impatient.

EnormousTiger · 29/01/2017 19:01

Progress.
One of mine has booked the Bristol trip today with 2 or 3 school friends. For some reason I have paid everyone's rail fares but will be getting it back..... as ever. [Have paid their Eurostars for a June trip too]

goodbyestranger · 29/01/2017 20:29

Yes EnormousTiger the reason I know the dates is the request for train tickets too. DS isn't going to the official Durham day because his next brother up went a couple of years ago and it put him off hugely - really badly organized and some massively overly jolly party games etc. Not a great ad for the uni so not worth wasting a fare on.

EnormousTiger · 29/01/2017 20:35

Interesting - my daughter was put off Durham by an open day too - she said it was too religious!

goodbyestranger · 29/01/2017 21:12

Well my oldest five didn't do open days or visit days they only went to Durham for a weekend en masse with me on a non official day ages before even the eldest was due to apply and to the Oxford Open Day which is organised annually by their school and they liked Durham then and they liked missing two days of school to kick around with friends in Oxford but I don't think the Open Day itself enthused them. Only #6 went to a couple of official post offer days - Durham and Bristol - and I think he'd have been better off visiting on his own, although Bristol didn't go so far as to put him off, whereas Durham did. It wasn't just the party games, the History Dept couldn't even be fagged to turn up to its organized event. It really was quite bad.

TwitterQueen1 · 04/02/2017 17:24

Finally! DD got AAA from Durham. It came through on Thursday but she only checked this am! She is thrilled, but now she is going to have to decide whether to put Durham or Exeter as her 1st choice....

Distance is the concern (for her). 4 or 5 hours to Durham, 2 for Exeter. She is worried about being homesick...

We will go to the open days for offer holders and see what her gut tells her...

Ohnobillyoh · 04/02/2017 17:56

DD got Durham offer this week too for Classics. We had resigned ourselves for a very long wait so it was a surprise. What subject has your DD applied for Twitter?

TwitterQueen1 · 04/02/2017 18:01

Hi OhNo
Ancient History - so not a million miles away from classics (which she's studying). She doesn't yet know what college she would be in. Apparently that info will follow in a few weeks. I believe she applied to St Mary's but whether or not she will get it, I don't know.

Ohnobillyoh · 04/02/2017 18:12

I think they start allocating colleges any time from now. DD is going to the offer day in half term so maybe she will know the college by then. I hope so as it means the day will be more useful.

TwitterQueen1 · 04/02/2017 18:34

We will see you there OhNo. Should we arrange a secret identity badge??? Wink

@Mumsnet - can we have an official MN badge please?

Ohnobillyoh · 04/02/2017 22:01

Good idea Twitter. Maybe I should dig out my Mumsnet scarfWink

Waitingforsherlock · 04/02/2017 23:14

Still nothing... Everything still pending. Does anyone know if dc's who aready have their A Level grades get treated differently during the application process please?
