Could we have a handholding thread? I have two DCs going through UCSS at the moment, would love to obsess here so I can appear calm on the outside.
LNAT results go to the UNIs tomorrow I think, so offers could be rolling in soon for DD who has applied for law.

Thanks ET. From reading through last years threads I had an idea it was quite late when you heard, but looking on TSR, there seems to be a trickle of offers coming through, but mainly for science and international students, I think.

Durham theology out over christmas even though had been told wouldn't hear anything until after the 15th - so as you say some notorious latecomers seem to be starting to trickle out. Good luck to all still waiting !

NewIdeasToday · 02/01/2017 12:52

**Sadusername

In answer to your question - my son received an offer for History from LSE about three weeks ago.

Sadusername · 03/01/2017 19:27

That's great New ideas. She had email saying she would hear before Xmas, and then another one to say they were closing for Xmas and she would hear in a couple of weeks, which has now passed.

NewIdeasToday · 03/01/2017 21:09

Fingers crossed for your daughter then :-)

tierny · 04/01/2017 08:09

DD has offers from Birmingham, Twickenham, Bedford and Hertfordshire, and another which I can't remember - bad mother but I've just woken up !

3 year Primary Edication, was such a long interview process, and a day long interview at each uni. Think she's going with Hertfordshire.

Sadusername Thankyou :)

Ds1 has been offered a conditional place at UEA.. they want him to do a foundation year in politics there and get CCC...
I think that's silliness.. he's predicted a BBC which I know isn't quite what they want (ABB) but I don't think he should do a foundation year.. it's an extra year of expense and student loans. I think if it came to him not getting the right grades he should resist a year not pay for a foundation year?? Or is there an advantage to doing the foundation year I'm not seeing?

(I did a foundation year of natural science at UEA also when ds1 was 2 to go back to uni as was so long since I'd done my alevels!)

Stopyourhavering · 05/01/2017 18:35

After months of parental concern nagging ds has finally submitted his UCAS form....must be something with being 1. Youngest and 2. Male
Now the waiting begins....( thought it would be easier having some this with his 2 older sisters!)

Sadusername · 06/01/2017 09:33

Poppies away,
I haven't got direct experience of this but my way of thinking is it would be better (and cheaper) to try and up his grades!

EnormousTiger · 06/01/2017 13:40

P, I agree - avoid the foundation year.
With BBC he can probably get in somewhere reasonable on clearing anyway next August.

TheMortificadosDragon · 06/01/2017 14:34

Poppy, did they just give him the offer with the foundation year or was there also one without for the ABB? Maybe if he has another offer from somewhere he likes in line with the BBC prediction he could put the UEA as reserve and if he did get ABB see if he could get the non-foundation place through adjustment/clearing? (sorry I'm still hazy myself how that end of things works)

Chickydoo · 06/01/2017 18:19

Has anyone had offers from Sussex yet?
DD waiting on Psychology.
Have offers from 4 others but Sussex was favourite.

Poppiesway · 06/01/2017 21:12

TheMortificadosDragon Nope.. just the foundation with CCC!! I emailed and asked how much fees were for the foundation course and they're £9250 also!! Shock
I've talked to him this evening and he's wanting to do it as he telly wants to go to UEA.. I asked begged him to really think about it. Thankfully he has a few months to go.. personally I wouldn't justify the extra loan and expense just to get in at UEA.. I'm wondering what a money maker the foundation courses must be!

EnormousTiger · 07/01/2017 08:54

I can ask my sons about Sussex when they wake up. I am sure some of their friends applied there. They even had a whole year school trip just to that university (and no other for some reason).

Sadusername · 07/01/2017 09:27

Poppie,
Is he capable of the effort needed to improve his predicted grades. Sit down with him and explain that basically if he just pays for tuition, it will cost him £3000 per grade he needs to go up. If he takes a student loan as well, it will be much more. He could end up adding £16 000 to the amount over £5000 per grade. I know it's not a debt in the traditional sense of the word, but it isn't value for money.

A tutor would be better if you could afford it!

Sadusername · 07/01/2017 09:29

Not very clear, a student staying at home could end up 'borrowing ' over £16 000 in one year.

Poppiesway · 08/01/2017 23:16

Sadusername He's more than capable.. but it's wether he can be bothered. He's so frustrating he sails along comfortably and always passes everything.. I fear as UEA is his first choice and they've offered the foundation with only a CCC that he will not even bother to try now :(
ds2 always has to work so hard for everything and just scrapes through and his brothers so nonchalant about it all and passes with good grades (A's and A* in his GCSEs without studying! sickening). He's so frustrating.. he has found alevels harder (as expected) but he won't push himself to get the good grades! Angry he doesn't go out anywhere or socialise a lot so I've not even got anything to use as a bargaining tool.
We're going to the applicants open day for the course so we can see what it's about then and I can pray he prefers anglia Ruskin Hmm

namechange7711 · 09/01/2017 21:08

Replying to a PP - DS is still waiting for an offer from Sussex too. He had his other 4 offers come through within days, but nothing from Sussex yet. I think they may well wait now until after the UCAS deadline has passed and review everyone's applications all together.

Don't suppose anyone knows if/when Sussex does Applicant Days? We're trying to schedule visits to various unis, so a heads-up would be helpful.

yolofish · 09/01/2017 22:57

anyone else waiting on an offer from Lincoln? DD2 has 4 offers inc her 1st choice, but Lincoln would be her 2nd and there seems to be a deafening silence.

And another question: do you all have to pay school £25 for applications? because we have been asked to and I cant remember it happening with DD1.

TheMortificadosDragon · 09/01/2017 23:27

There was a £24 UCAS fee when DD submitted, it wasn't anything to do with the school though.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 12/01/2017 09:26

DD has 4 offers and just waiting now on an almost promised one from Reading. They sent a very encouraging quite personal email from the department before Christmas. Wonder if they're now waiting for close of play (on Sunday?) and we'll hear from them sometime next week? Reading looking like a strong contender from what we've heard and seen, but we need to visit them and Swansea as they're the two we've not got to yet. May also go for return visits to Sheffield and Royal Holloway. We've got an interesting course at USW as a likely insurance choice. Feel like we're slowly getting our ducks in a row if that seems a suitable analogy! Zoology is the subject, which DD is excited about - I hope think that unlike me she's chosen the right subject for her!

EnormousTiger · 12/01/2017 10:02

Yes, my boys had to pay the fee when they put in their application (private schools but I think you pay in state schools too).

MrsBernardBlack · 12/01/2017 16:18

Well, DS heard that he has not got an offer from Oxford, so it's looking like St Andrews. However, that doesn't really give him a back up, as the only other place he would consider (Exeter) has made a higher offer.

I am hoping that he might switch and make Exeter first choice. I am bit worried that the reason he doesn't want to go there is because it is too close to home - we live in Cornwall - rather than anything to do with the course.

amirrorimage · 12/01/2017 16:31

MrsBernardBlack* is he still waiting for offers that he might consider as insurance?
If he really prefers St Andrews then why should he firm Exeter?
