Could we have a handholding thread? I have two DCs going through UCSS at the moment, would love to obsess here so I can appear calm on the outside.
LNAT results go to the UNIs tomorrow I think, so offers could be rolling in soon for DD who has applied for law.

No parents at Birmingham, Bristol and optional at Reading.

I thought Physics at Manchester was supposed to be more highly regarded than Oxford, though, Amazing. Apparently they have 9(?) Nobel laureates in the department.

No, this is not true.

Manchester has the graphene Nobel laureates, but both Oxford and Manchester have many strong physicists. And remember that Nobel prizes are not usually awarded (particularly in theoretical physics) until decades after the work is completed, so Nobel

prizes are not in themselves good measures of the quality of the research going on in a department. Nobel prize winners often did their good work decades earlier and are often near retirement. (This is not true of Geim et al in Manchester but is often true.)

ErrolTheDragon · 28/11/2016 07:01

Nobel

prizes are not in themselves good measures of the quality of the research going on in a department

And even less so of the quality of the teaching, presumably!

Pipkinhartley · 28/11/2016 16:41

*apparently the purpose of interview is so they may be able to still consider applicants who don't achieve that.

The real purpose of the interview is to bring applicants to campus and persuade them to choose Manchester!*

That's as may be - someone mentioned this early on in the thread!

It was still good to go and get a feel for the place, and to be fair, the talks were completely open in that they were about selling Manchester.

Anyway, DS had his offer for physics, A A A, which is the same as his BHM offer.

And the Oxford offers are coming out now, we had some good new!

Pipkinhartley · 28/11/2016 16:41

To clarify, offers to interview, not actual offers!

GetAHaircutCarl · 29/11/2016 12:07

Quick update.

DD got through the first round of auditions at RADA and has been asked to go back for round two in a couple of weeks.

I text to tell her and received the response OMFG!

Needmoresleep · 29/11/2016 12:44

Well done mini-Haircut! Even if she gets no further that is a huge achievement. I hope it goes well for the next round. How many rounds are there?

GetAHaircutCarl · 29/11/2016 13:01

Exactly need.

There are four rounds in total. So still a long shot.

4,000 hopefuls will be whittled to 28.

goodbyestranger · 29/11/2016 13:14

Yes, well done her! How many is it down to at round two? Presumably the cull is biggest/ most savage between rounds one and two?

GetAHaircutCarl · 29/11/2016 13:26

Dunno goodbye but loads must get through.

First round auditions are still ongoing in London and haven't yet started in Dublin, Leicester, Manchester, Newcastle, Plymouth, LA and New York.

AmazingDisgrace · 29/11/2016 14:29

Hi sorry, Had a busy weekend...Ono, DS is applying for Physics. We've still not heard a peep from Oxford or UCL . I'm not holding my breath for Oxford in any case..

GypsyFl0ss · 29/11/2016 15:14

Wow that's great news!

EnormousTiger · 29/11/2016 17:44

So now we have for my two:

Bristol AAB, Exeter AAA, Nottingham AAB (and unconditional if firmed/accepted which he won't as it's 5th choice).
Other one has:
Exeter AAA, Nottingham AAB

(No interviews expected or likely)

I think they both want Bristol or Durham as first choice although have not said so as much but I am guessing.

Not heard from from Edinburgh and Durham (and in one case Bristol)

Good luck to those with interviews and auditions coming up.

GypsyFl0ss · 29/11/2016 20:02

Well done to all those DC who have got offers.

Enormous Durham made my DD her offer on the last day before UCAS closed and that was classed as fairly early!

EnormousTiger · 29/11/2016 21:32

Although their friend who is applying for Cambridge has a Durham offer already but they know it can be late.

goodbyestranger · 30/11/2016 07:34

EnormousTiger it's quite a testament to your parenting that the twins are both applying to the same five unis - well done you too!

(Am I right that one twin is applying for History? Is that the twin with the AAB offer in which case Shock. But what about the other?).

goodbyestranger · 30/11/2016 07:46

AAB offer from Bristol is what the Shock is about....

EnormousTiger · 30/11/2016 07:49

One of them would rather they don't end up at the same university and certainly not the same Durham college if they go there. The other does not mind. They have always had very different friends and hobbies but it's sometimes logistically easier they need to be in the same place at the same time. I am just glad they are doing about the same on grades at school as it is quite common with non identical twins that one can be academically worse than the other or indeed both not too good as twin births far from being exciting and lovely are actually quite risky.

(On the subjects ancient h, not history - he knows Bristol is very much harder to get into for history for example although he does like ancient history so that is all working well so far.... and I hope I won't be eating my words in August but he should get AAB as he got AAAA at AS. Other one which is a bit harder is going for geog. and he has not heard from Bristol)

goodbyestranger · 30/11/2016 07:53

Not a squeak from Durham here either.

meridithssister · 30/11/2016 08:57

Brilliant news getahaircut! Applicant day for my sons first choice is on his 18th birthday....at the other end of the country. Trying to work out what to do Smile

GetAHaircutCarl · 30/11/2016 09:02

Thanks for all the good wishes guys.

DailyMailJournosSmell · 30/11/2016 09:53

You can get into Bristol with lower offers than AAB. Look at bsc Sociology for example 2017 entry is ABB and BBB for contextual offers.

In comparison you could do Mathematics at Coventry which has the same ABB entry requirements. 🤔

goodbyestranger · 30/11/2016 10:04

DailyMail I was referring specifically to History at Bristol - AAB would be a very good deal for one of Tiger's DC, given that he's at an indie.

EnormousTiger · 30/11/2016 12:38

Yes, their older sister deliberately used that same plan as she was picking a career where employers choose by status of institution rather than which degree you do. That is of course not the case for many careers. it is pretty obvious why the AH one has the Bristol offer whereas geography which is more competitive has not had one yet and they knew that when they picked their particular subjects although the geog one took a Nottingham lady to task at an open day at his school apparently because his twin had the unconditional and he didn't and according to him it was not possile to get higher marks in his AS than he got in that subject and so why didn't he get the conditional... I am laughing as I type and I am sure it made him feel better to say his piece but rules is rules and the universities can treat different subjects differently if they want to. Anyway unconditionals are a deal with the devil usually - they mean we are not a great place so we will try to con you into taking up this offer. (mind you back 40 years unconditionals from Oxbridge were sometimes there so perhaps my point is a bit too much of a generalisation).

ByTheSea · 30/11/2016 19:57

DD now has offers from Newcastle AAB and Exeter AAA, and her Oxford interview next week. Apparently Edinburgh and St Andrews aren't making offers yet. She is very happy.
