Could we have a handholding thread? I have two DCs going through UCSS at the moment, would love to obsess here so I can appear calm on the outside.
LNAT results go to the UNIs tomorrow I think, so offers could be rolling in soon for DD who has applied for law.

apparently the purpose of interview is so they may be able to still consider applicants who don't achieve that.

The real purpose of the interview is to bring applicants to campus and persuade them to choose Manchester!

GetAHaircutCarl · 24/11/2016 12:26

user I'm pretty sure that is what DD's 'audition' at Exeter is about. Get applicants there, have a super fun day doing workshop type stuff.

need DD says it was fine at RADA.
She didn't meet many other candidates as they were each given different time slots. But of the people she did meet, she was the youngest by far.

The chap before her was 20 and 'lush' apparently Wink.

The audition itself went well-ish. The Viola monologue was okay. She was redirected and asked to do it again in modern English. Also asked why she chose the piece which she had a reasonable answer to - there are so few Shakespeare female monologues that have anything of the feisty teen about them. Plus DD is a twin...

The People Places Things monologue 'rocked.' I've seen her do that one and it is rather good (though what do I know?).

The whole place is surprisingly scruffy actually. I don't know what I was expecting. Something more glam?

That strategy is a double-edged sword. I know of more than a few applicants put off by an unenthusiastic interviewer or interview day undergraduate tour.
I am also rather cynical of whether the interview really does get taken into account for dropped grades as claimed for subjects like physics. May be it will this year with an expanded intake.

LittleHoHum · 24/11/2016 18:27

It is a bit double edged as some students in dd's sixthform are turning down the universities asking for interviews because they already have one offer and don't want the cost of travelling.

CharliePurple · 24/11/2016 19:02

It also can be a way to weed out students from poor families.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/11/2016 19:25

DD reckoned some of the interviews weren't actually compulsory or could have been done by phone.

sendsummer · 24/11/2016 19:33

The one advantage of interview days is that prospective students can use them as open days. No need to travel twice. Obviously that would n't work if a student was n't sure to include the university as one of their five choices.

AmazingDisgrace · 25/11/2016 00:37

DS1 had his interview at Manchester today. He thinks it went well and they said he'll almost certainly get an offer which is nice other than its likely to be the same offer as Oxford (should that even happen) or higher at AAA. Still, always nice to get the offer. We're now biting nails waiting to see if he gets an interview for Oxford and hoping UCL pull their fingers out soon.

gastromum · 25/11/2016 04:54

Have been reading the thread since it started and am delurking as my DD has now submitted her UCAS form - Forensic Anthropology.

All seems very real now!

GypsyFl0ss · 25/11/2016 05:45

DS has been offered interviews for his 3 courses, thankfully all on the same day and as he has only applied to one uni, all at the same place. Unfortunately they are smack in the middle of mocks so he needs to contact them about alternative dates and they do state that they might not be able to offer another date and tha your application cannot progress without an interview.

Carriemac · 25/11/2016 07:12

Gypsy school should be able to sort that out for him, taking the mocks earlier or later ? Get on to his personal tutor that's whet they're for

Amazing, what course has your DS applied for at Manchester?

My DS has another offer for History at Nottingham, AAA.

OddBoots · 26/11/2016 09:17

DS has now got an invitation of a subject open day including interview at Sheffield, they aren't until Feb or March, I think that is because he has applied for a combined degree (Computer Science and Maths) and he needs to be at one that covers both subjects.

If I am reading the email right they say that he will get an offer after that day but the interview may tell them more about him so may enhance his chances of being accepted anyway if he slips a grade or two from the offer. They refund his travelling costs up to £50 so that takes a little bit of the pressure off.

I shall be travelling as far as Sheffield with him then we will split up and he can do the university stuff while I enjoy the city.

HardcoreLadyType · 26/11/2016 09:22

I thought Physics at Manchester was supposed to be more highly regarded than Oxford, though, Amazing. Apparently they have 9(?) Nobel laureates in the department.

GypsyFl0ss · 26/11/2016 21:27

Carrie he spoke to school the next day and they're happy to reschedule any exams that clash so he can attend.

gastromum · 26/11/2016 23:44

Very happy DD - she has an offer from Liverpool for Forensic Anthropology - not sure what the conditions are as she can not sign on to Track this weekend - scheduled maintenance !

CharliePurple · 26/11/2016 23:48

Well done Gastro DD :)

GetAHaircutCarl · 27/11/2016 16:38

Yes Track ( or Crack as we call it in Casa GetAHairCutCarl due to its addictive nature) is down this weekend.

goodbyestranger · 27/11/2016 17:38

Track was up and running an hour or so ago. It always seems to come back ahead of schedule.

goodbyestranger · 27/11/2016 17:40

Yes still up just checked.

gastromum · 27/11/2016 19:13

Thanks, she's just checked it - needs 112 points or BBC - with a C in Biology - so she is very happy with that!

She's expecting an A* in her Extended Project (as per teachers grading but it needs to be ratified by the exam board) - do these still count?

And another quickie - Applicant Days, parents or no parents?!!

LittleHoHum · 27/11/2016 19:16

Loving the name crack for track GetAHaircut. Grin

kua · 27/11/2016 19:59

No parents!

ErrolTheDragon · 27/11/2016 20:43

The epqs may be taken into consideration on some courses -one of the ones DD is applying to is one grade lower (ie a B instead of one A) if they get A/A* in a relevant epq, but others dont

Some applicant days will ask how many guests the applicant is bringing - DH went to her southampton one, they gave the parents a separate tour and a talk about loans. But you certainly dont have to go.

meridithssister · 27/11/2016 22:13

Offer from York of AAB. (Firm choice). Very happy boy here. Smile
