DD and her friends secured their house yesterday. There are 5 of them, and a new house came on, and they dashed over to see it, and then straight on to the Letting Agents to confirm they wanted to take it. As they were filling out the forms another group came in wanting the same property, and both groups' details were sent to the Landlord who confirmed they'd let it to DD and her friends. Small matter of immediate deposit of £430 plus agent's fee of £180 (per person). She's given our names and details as guarantors, and says it will just be for her room, not for the whole house! Presume we'll get something through the post soon and will need to check it carefully. She's in Catered Halls this year, which she has really been enjoying, but this should be much cheaper even though it still seems quite expensive.

That sounds about right for what DS was doing in the summer last year, he left it until late and then just slotted in with whoever, and it has worked very well for their household. I wasn't surprised they asked him for a retainer, just that he had to do it so early. The whole thing has been interesting to watch.

friday and littleham hope everything works out for your DDs.
I'm with DD3 in her uni town. She's staying up here moving into Summer halls this weekend. Was supposed to move tomorrow but her room isn't ready yet. The warden said they will try and get the room ready before Monday. He said if l have to go home before her room is ready they will help her move her stuff. It's on the same campus she is on now. He also said that all the the accommodation staff like DD3 she's one of their best students. Polite, doesn't argue and isn't too noisy. That made me proud now just got to get her to keep her room tidy Wink Wink

fridayfreedom · 07/06/2015 12:13

Am practically aching to have her home now. So jealous of those who have finished.
she had better contact me when she gets her results tomorrow. Feely anxious for her, does this ever get better?
Lots going on here so just want my dc back for the summer.
dsil is terminally ill, so dh is supporting her as there are no other relatives. Ds is doing gcses and finishes on 19th June.
Work is shit and my lovely manager is leaving at the end of the month as she cant cope with it any more.
am taking the dc away for a holiday at a friends house in July so cant wait just to chill and relax, hopefully!

Needmoresleep · 07/06/2015 15:23

Oh Friday. I hope your have good news with the exam results.

The Germans have a phrase "urlaubsreif" which is used for that time of the year when everyone is tired and fed up. It means "ready for holidays".

Poor DD. Still mone more exam to go, and she has already been set a project by one teacher whilst another says they want A2 coursework completed by the end of term. Given it is a private school with ridicously long holidays she only has a couple of weeks. Then work experience and UKCAT revision. I'm glad I've booked our first ever long-haul family holiday, otherwise she would be starting next term urlaubsreif.

Littleham · 07/06/2015 16:21

Total urlaubsreif in the Littleham household. Wishing your dd luck for her results Needmoresleep.

fridayfreedom · 07/06/2015 16:50

That sounds like a very good word!
It really is like that isnt it, when times get tough I just want to have my dc close to me and to loom after them.

Needmoresleep · 07/06/2015 16:56

And I realise I meant to add the stuff about AS levels to the Yr 12 thread. Urlaubsrife. And yes, looming after chldren sounds good as well.

fridayfreedom · 07/06/2015 18:03

Oops, rubbish typing :)

fridayfreedom · 08/06/2015 14:59

Text from dd. did really well in her essay so got the grade she wanted over all. Has gone off to the beach to celebrate with instructions to wear sun cream!
Hope all you dc do well and return home safely for a good summer

SecretSquirrels · 08/06/2015 17:02

Just caught up with this thread. How is your DD now Littleham?

There are some magnificent German words aren't there? I don't know that one but must remember it Needmoresleep. Has your DD got the UKCAT booked for before your holiday?

Friday so glad to hear she is happy with her grade. Knowing they are stressed even though you can't see them and they are hundreds of miles away is still tough. Sorry about your DSIL and work.

DS is on number 6 of 8 exams today, waiting for a text as he always lets us know how it went at length . I know he is wound up like a spring. He's coming home for a few days on Sunday Smile. Then back for results. DS2 is almost finished AS and then open days start again.
Looking forward to my holidays.

Littleham · 08/06/2015 18:07

She is starting to recover now thanks SecretSquirrels. Has introduced dry toast / rice - so far so good. Her flatmates were amazing & she is going to get them all a present.

She managed to take all the German exams, but none of the Italian ones. The university have been great and she is taking them in August / September instead.

Glad your ds has nearly finished his exams SS. Hurrah for Friday's dd. Smile

Kez100 · 08/06/2015 20:09

Oh Littleham, what a worry. Pleased she is on the mend.

My DD is home and gone again - away for a week in a cottage with my parents. She's just finished a paid commission and is now working on her summer briefs while away - oh, for our hobby to be our work.

Son has just finished his GCSE Maths today and is close to the end of his first year BTEC in ICT - he has a good grade in Maths but has spent a year resitting in the hope of bagging a better grade, which will always be useful on a CV.

So, summer is nearly here. I've got a weekend at the end of July in London with DD and two weeks off in July, so not long to wait now.

Doilooklikeatourist · 09/06/2015 07:23

DS has been home for 2 weeks now , started a job in a call centre and got the sack after a week . He was cold calling about PPI and didn't manage to sign anyone up , making 280 calls a day ,was frequently told to fuck off and had someone threaten him with the police !

Moral of the story , tick the box and don't let MSE sell your details if you don't want cold calls

He is planning to work at festivals this summer , and worked in North Wales last weekend emptying bins at Access All Eirias , did about 30 hours over 3 days , came home yesterday exhausted and sun burnt .
His girlfriend is coming to stay tomorrow for a few days , which means he won't work next weekend ,

We bumped into a friend who has a son at a different London Uni , looking to rent a shared house with friends , the Dad was shocked on receiving the guarantor form , that he was expected to earn over £89k
We live in rural Wales and most people don't earn half that !
Very lucky DS is going to stay in halls :)

mumeeee · 09/06/2015 10:01

Doilook a lot of cold calling centres/companies seem to take students on then sack them before the probation period is up that way they can get away with cheap labour. DD2 once lasted about 9 weeks at a call centre the probation period was 12 weeks. The centre had taken on 12 students and DD2 was the 10th one to be sacked. Anyway hope his work at festivals goes okay.

Doilooklikeatourist · 09/06/2015 20:03

Yes mummee he wasn't the only one sacked , 2 others went
7 started at the same time as him . And 5 were sacked the week before he started
He's working in Caerphilly on Sunday , marshalling a cycle race
I'm happy for him to do this , if you cant have a summer travelling the UK , working in different jobs with your friends when you're young , it's something he'll probably never get another chance at
He's passed all his exams scraped some of them I was told he only had 2 exams , but he's had more than 2 results :)
Hope everyone has a good summer , and the DC don't get in the way / sit on your favourite sofa / eat all the biscuits etc ...

dementedma · 09/06/2015 20:12

Dd shares a flat with one flatmate and they each pay £320 a month for rent. Flat is brand new, totally renovated and very well situated. I was worried about how we funded it over the summer but she has managed to get a job so we should be ok. No agency fees but we had to sign as guarantors.

mumeeee · 09/06/2015 22:46

Doilooklikeatourist Did he have some assignments to do as well? Perhaps that was where the other results came from. DD3 only had one exam but several assignments. She has passed two assignments but wont get the rest of her results until next week.

Well done to all those who have passed their exams and assignments and good luck to those who are waiting.
Littleham glad your DD is on the mend.

JellicleCat · 11/06/2015 22:14

Empty nesters from last year may remember the trauma my DD (and I) went through last summer when she failed all her first year exams. After some hard thinking and a lot of angst she transferred from her science course to an arts one and started again in first year at the same uni (which she loves by the way).

She has just texted me to say she had passed all her exams this year Grin

So if anyone else's dc is wondering about changing course, I would say go for it.

Doilooklikeatourist · 11/06/2015 22:22

Mummee yes , some were "course work " I'm just glad he's passed them all , don't care what he calls them !
He's home now , and his girl friend is staying with us for a few days ( first one we've met :) )

jellicle good to hear that this year has been better for you both

mumeeee · 11/06/2015 22:35

Well done to your DD JellicleCat and that you have both had a better year. DD3 heard today that her mitigating circumstances application has been accepted. So they will take that into consideration when marking her assignments and exam, She won't know al the results until sometime next week.

Isthiscorrect · 13/06/2015 18:10

Congrats to all the DC with results. Ds doesn't get his till July 14th! It's almost as stressful as waiting last year. Lol.

Notsoskinnyminny · 14/06/2015 17:26

DD's just got her welcome pack for next year with a date to move into halls so we've booked her flights and 10 weeks tomorrow she'll be on her way although I'll probably be glad to see her disappear through security as condensing her life into 2 cases is going to be stressful and there'll be screaming matches about which shoes and bags are essential!

That's great news jellicle and mumeeee Does anyone else sometimes wish they could go back and freeze time, I'd love to redo the KS1 years and then fastforward to when they've graduated and got the jobs of their dreams Grin

fridayfreedom · 15/06/2015 08:21

Dd came home yesterday. Very touch and go re getting everything in the car, she has assured me that she wont be taking everything back!
The lounge looks like a bomb site, she has a week to clear itGrin

mumeeee · 15/06/2015 12:06

I expect you are glad she's home fridayfreedom. Don't you mean a month to clear it :)

Milliways · 18/06/2015 16:12

I haven't been in these threads for a while. DS just home from 2nd year but is off in 2 weeks to start a 10 week placement in Canary Wharf , cue lots of suit/shirt/shoe shopping :)
He worked away all last Summer too, but these jobs mean he has been able to not take the Student loan, just tuition fees (we lay his rent).
It's great having him back, feel like a locust has invaded the kitchen though! So far he has had a 1st in all his exams both years, so we are hoping that will continue as it will help with the job interviews that will start very soon for the "real" jobs.

mumeeee · 18/06/2015 20:58

Hi Milliways. It's good to see you. well done to your DS. DD3 is home for a couple if days to attend her Grandmother's ( my Mother) Funeral which is tomorrow. We have been able to spend a day together which is good.
She hasn't done as well as she would have liked in her second year but that is partly because of her Grandmothers illness and death
She only got 35% in her exam which mans she got 39% overall for that module and she needs 40% to pass. She applied for and got mitigating circumstances. She is just waiting for them to get back to her to find out whether they will cunt the module as passed or whether she needs to resit the exam. If she does have to resit she won't be capped at 40% as they will count it as a first sit.
