Still waiting to hear from Durham

Would anyone like to join me in the wait to hear from Durham....feeling so stressed on DDs behalf as she is convinced that she won't get an offer (having been rejected by Oxford). I think that if she doesn't get an offer there she's going to take a year out and reapply....she says she'll be more upset to get rejected by Durham than Oxford. Just wish they would make a decision either way so she can plan ahead. Anyone else waiting to hear....why do they take so long?

Just coming back to this to say DS had an offer today -AAB, so looks like decisions are starting to be made... fingers crossed for others waiting.....

ryansbeat · 22/01/2015 07:39

That's great news Merrylegs, do you mind me asking which course that was for? I keep hoping every day for my DD.

I remember you asking if anyone had received the merry xmas email and I said we hadn't. Well I asked DD the other day if she'd had any correspondence at all from Durham and she said, oh yes, I had an email to say merry xmas! Made me feel a little better but I'm finding this waiting so stressful.

Ryansbeat, thank you :)

HasSOsm97 · 22/01/2015 11:20

Ialamumto3, DD is applied for Philsosphy, the offer is 37 points IB 6,6,6 at high, she is predicted 42 points 7,7,7 high

HasSOsm97 · 22/01/2015 11:22

Merryless, well done to your DD for offer! Which uni did she recieve the offer from?

Merrylegs · 22/01/2015 13:09

I'll be cryptic ryansbeat and say course is Sciency, not Theol. And he wasn't an Oxbridge candidate. Now he just has to decide if it'll make his top 2 choices but wants to decide asap as the email seemed to imply they allocate the colleges from Feb and he doesn't want to miss out on the one he is keenest on.

ryansbeat · 22/01/2015 14:33

Thanks Merrylegs, that's understood. Nice to have lots of offers to choose from - I think I too read that Durham start making college allocations from Feb. Good luck!

YoyaCats, well done to your DS :)

Hi all.
We are also waiting for Durham! Poor DD is stressed out. She is waiting for UCL, Edinburgh and St Andrews too. All her friends have received most of their offers and it's VERY frustrating. She wants to do History and Spanish.

HocusUcas · 24/01/2015 10:37

Jojolil
DS waiting for History UCL here too. With you in spirit.

RandomFriend · 24/01/2015 11:59

Jojolil I'm with you there too. I wonder whether, if they are applying for two subjects as your DS, they have to be accepted by two departments before an offer can be given? This could explain why the offers are slower to arrive?

DD is still waiting to hear from Edinburgh and Durham. It is very frustrating as almost everyone else seems to have five offers and DD has been rejected from Oxford.

ryansbeat · 24/01/2015 12:08

With you all too...we're still waiting. I wish they'd give us an answer, think it would really help my DD to know exactly what she's doing going forward. Hurry up Durham!

DD has applied for Combined Arts. Is anyone else waiting to hear regarding this course? Has anyone had an offer for Combined Arts?

Just before Christmas, DD was asked to specify which four subjects she would like to do. I am assuming that all four departments have to approve her application, which would explain the delay.

Edinburgh let her know back in October that they had received her application, that they would try to let her know by March but that they may well not tell her until May. Very, very frustrating!

ryansbeat · 24/01/2015 12:43

My DD is applying for a single honours, one of her friends has had an offer just before Xmas but all the others are still waiting to hear too.

ryansbeat the Oxford confirmations have started to come through so I would expect that to accelerate things in the arts and humanities departments now with Durham, as people insure and firm elsewhere. On the whole Durham is pretty useless as an insurance in those areas - more viable for science.

DS hasn't heard anything from Durham at all for single honours history, apart from the Happy Christmas thing.

Tantalisingduck · 24/01/2015 15:37

You'd hope that the Durham candidates who also applied to and were successful for Oxbridge might withdraw their applications to Durham. As Molio says the offer from Durham will often be higher than the Oxbridge offer (particularly the Oxford offer) so presumably sensible to choose a uni for insurance with a lower offer, or at least not a higher one. And that would possibly free up places for students whose first choice is Durham.

Molio · 24/01/2015 16:51

Agree that they should Td, unless they think they might actually prefer Durham if it becomes an option. Otherwise it would definitely be the decent thing to do to clear the way. Track is down until Monday though and I think the Oxford confirmations only started to come through yesterday morning, so there won't be much movement for at least a couple of days.

ryansbeat · 28/01/2015 19:19

Good news at last, DD came home to say she's had an offer from Durham, so a happy house here tonight!

Still here in spirit for all those still waiting.

OP posts:
Tantalisingduck · 28/01/2015 19:56

Oh that's great news ryansbeat. She'll be starting with my DD then. Which college did she apply to?

ryansbeat · 29/01/2015 06:47

Thank you Tantalisingduck, she's applied to St Chads. How about your DD?

I'm not sure how the process works with Durham. Will she need to firm this offer in order to be allocated a college (which I've read starts from Feb 1st) or can she firm once she knows which college she's been allocated to? And if she doesn't receive an offer from her chosen college does that mean the offer is withdrawn? She's now had all her offers in and I seem to recall that once they've received all their offers they need to firm/insurance within a certain time. If anyone knows the process I'd be grateful for any advice as I'm rather confused! Thank you.

Still waiting here, congrats to your DD Ryan.

My DD is waiting on a dual honours, so could be a while yet.
