Results Day and UCAS

MotherOfGirls · 06/08/2013 12:03

Eldest DD is expecting A level results on 15th so this is my first experience of UCAS. She seems to think her results will go to UCAS before they are emailed to her by her school, and so she will find out if she has made her offer by checking her UCAS account. She also thinks this happens at midnight. Can anyone confirm any of this, please?

They have just put up the clearing vacancies for my sons first choice Uni course and the grades are the same as when he applied he's now convinced himself he's missed his predicted grades and that that's that! I have tried to tell him that if he's missed it by a little he's gonna be fine. Roll on tomorrow morning ! Just need an answer its like torture!

In terms of student number controls, it is universities as a whole that have limits on the number of non ABB students that they can recruit.

If a university only has a small number of places in their quota, it makes sense to make all their offers above the limit and to use the quota places for programmes that have not fill enough of their places.

So my guess is that what has happened in this case.

MissMarples - snap. DS is holding an offer from Warwick. He needs AAA, but it looks as though the same course is in clearing at BBB.

CreamTeas - thanks for your reply, that makes sense!

The good news is that if students have missed their offer, but made the advertised clearing grades, they have probably been accepted :)

Sorry to be thick Creamteas but could you please clarify:

DS was offered ABB. His course is in clearing for ABB-. I'm thinking either he's got a place as he will have got ABB or he will have an offer if he missed one grade and got, for example, ABC?

Part of me wants to be optimistic and thing he's in unless he missed by miles.

JGB what is he hoping to study?

Gaaah! Off out to supper with a chum, take my mind of it, DD is at her Dads so at least we can't wind each other up!!

Will be back later though.

Letsface

If the clearing grade is the same as the offer, that is likely to mean that the course is almost full so they can be more picky about who they take.

They might be so full they decline everyone who misses their grades, or they might still allow students to drop a grade (it will depend of the policy of the dept/university).

Where I work we prefer to take students who have just missed than go into clearing looking for higher grades. This is because these students have positively chosen us and are less likely to wobble in their first year. But other universities are more worried about their league table position if they drop entry grades.

MissMarples All universities have their own policies, so I can't tell you exactly. But is highly unlikely that they would turn away a student who made the clearing grades.

Thank you for all the help and patience Creamteas

I thought the change from ABB to ABB- was a drop. It was definitely a - next to the B (some had a + for other courses).

I assumed B- was less than a B or they definitely wanted AB and the 3rd grade could be the one that dropped to a c.

I wish I had a crystal ball.

He did really well in the interview and they said they kept a kind of banded list. I'm hoping if he misses his grades a little, he's in the band 'we really want to offer this person a place if we can'

ds chose a course which is advertising clearing grades as the same as normal offer grades. He already has his grades which were one grade short of what the website stated but figured he had nothing to lose, he applied through clearing a fortnight ago and last week they made him an offer so it can be done.

Don't give up hope if its the perfect course

I didn't realise he could do that eatyourveg. Top tip.

Does that mean he'd have to give up his insurance offer though - in order to be released into clearing?

LetsFaceTheMusicAndDance he was holding a deferred place from last year but changed his mind. He had to withdraw completely from the 2012 cycle and start again for 2013. Even though he applied as an individual this time around, school were fantastic and updated their reference to include the work he did there during his gap year and he updated his personal statement to say what he had done (everything was related to his subject so maybe that helped)

It was risky letting go of his UF but he also had another application in for a place abroad which he would have fallen back on if this one hadn't worked out.

I'm happier that he'll be nearer home but going abroad would have saved £9Kpa

No ISing it's not just you.

I was washing the bathroom ceiling at stupid o clock this morning. DS is in the gym with his dad now, hoping to tire himself out. I think we'll all be having a nightcap later.

The main thing is don't panic!!

As an admissions tutor I have been working with the results all week. We have made decisions on the majority of our students, but we still have some outstanding issues. These include:

Missing results on track - there are always a number of students whose A level results have not updated properly. We will take all of these providing they have made our clearing grades, but we need to talk to them.

Insurance places - some universities (mentioning no names!) hold onto their firm applicants who missed their grades. If they can get better results in clearing they will take them in preference. This means that the insurance university has to hold off allocating these in clearing. So a course might be full on Thursday and have places on Monday!!

So keep both of these things, and good luck!

Really, really good luck to everyone - I'm keeping everything crossed for good outcomes tomorrow. Please come back and update! I have speculated till I am all speculated out so I'm off to watch Masterchef. Dh has decided to take Ds out for a bit of driving practice - I'm not sure who he trying to distract!

Luckily my DS had been at work all day then looked on his phone during a tea break. He has listed two other courses at the same Uni with lower grades but has his heart set on his first choice this is the second time he has applied to them after working and resitting this year it's unusual because you have to have proven sporting ability so fingers crossed I hope he's got there .
