17 days to go. Anyone else getting nervous about A level results day?

All the evidence suggests he'll get the grades he need for his first choice. But logic doesn't count for much at these times, in my experience, going all the way back to my own results days!

ds1 has just hit me with "I don't want to go to uni, I don't want to collect my results, I've emailed school to give permission for you to collect them" "So what do you want to do then son?" "Go and live in New York" "And how will you live?" "dunno I just don't want to be in this country anymore!"

Trying to remain as calm as poss and looking at European options but its proving difficult as he wants to do English Lit and the only course we found delivered in English was at Groningen but that seemed to be aimed at second language speakers. As a compromise he will apparently consider working at Shakespeare and Co in Paris!!

Not sure I can stay sane!

quirrelquarrel · 15/08/2012 20:32

I wanted to be a tumbleweed in Paris this summer Grin but was slightly put off when I went there.....bit of a tourist trap now, everyone very trendy and Topshop fashionable and cool. I want raggedy nerdy twitchy people (god knows I have that pegged), not cool people who'll pay £20 for a classic with a stamp in it. You work for free though....

hollolew2 · 15/08/2012 20:55

Anxious here DS is eating anything that's not moving! He messed up his As's but resat and did well but it's the unknown quantity of the June A2's and a couple As resits :0/

homeaway · 15/08/2012 20:56

Eat your veg, he could probably defer his place for a year and take a gap year if that is an option for you ? He is probably feeling very stressed at the moment, as you are ! He might change his mind tomorrow when he gets his results. I know that a lot of European unis have closing dates for applications in the first quarter of the year.

maddiemostmerry · 15/08/2012 21:01

Eat, hopefully just nerves.

My ds has just got back from his first 18-30 holiday. He would now like to be an 18-30 rep.

eatyourveg · 15/08/2012 21:02

Is it not too late to defer?

creamteas · 15/08/2012 21:14

Eat yes some universities will accept a deferral at this point, you would need to ask. Have you thought about any of the Irish universities for English Lit? Not checked this year, but fees in Ireland used to be a lot less than England and you don;t need to worry about the language :) They start earlier though so probably not an option for this years entry

Tressy · 15/08/2012 22:20

If they defer/don't get in this year/change their minds/or drop out half way through the first year, it's only one year out of the rest of their lives.

DD's been away traveling this summer. I missed her and if she stays home another year and reapplies so be it. She might travel again for a while and that can be really valuable and some fun time before they get stuck in to study is worthwhile.

If they retake to get better grades then armed it stronger A levels means better options to study later on.

Of course if they meet the grades this time, even better Grin. I hope everyone gets what they need but if not, don't fret too much.

Tressy · 15/08/2012 22:21

with not 'it'.

goingmadinthecountry · 15/08/2012 22:28

I'm stressing quietly on dd1's behalf.

Horrible, isn't it? I never had this myself because I took A levels at 17 before applying to UCCA as it was then.

Dd is trying to be calm. She went away with a friend, then we've been away with the family for a few days. I know (as she does really) that in the end she'll get to where she wants to be whatever, and she doesn't want to accept her insurance offer - the only one to offer AAB - so would rather take a couple more A2s and go somewhere she really likes.

Dh is working abroad and gps are living on another planet so just me getting stressed. I just must remember to be involved enough in dd2's GCSEs next week!

AlmostAHipster · 15/08/2012 23:07

I'm having palpitations!

I can't even be bothered with Celebrity Big Brother Shock - that's how anxious I am!

My girl has spent most of the day dozing and wafting around the house, happy as Larry!

CherryLip · 15/08/2012 23:13

Oh scary times. It is a year ago that I discovered Mumsnet and the equivalent thread when DD was waiting for A2 results. I learned an awful lot on the run up to the results and remember constantly checking the thread throughout the night. I think it was possible to check on UCAS track from midnight UK to see if your offer had changed to confirmed but the site quickly crashed and I didn't have DD's login details anyway. We rang the school to be told they thought she would be very happy with her results! First year at first choice now done. This year it's DS for As results. Good luck to everyone I know exactly how you are feeling.

AlmostAHipster · 15/08/2012 23:18

Thanks, CherryLip.

I hope everyone gets good news in the morning!

goingmadinthecountry · 15/08/2012 23:58

I don't think I've ever felt so useless as a parent. There's absolutely nothing I can do. So I'm doing the next best thing and drinking wine.

Tressy · 15/08/2012 23:59

What we can check in 2 mins?

Tressy · 15/08/2012 23:59

going, cheers!

out2lunch · 16/08/2012 00:01

argh ds is away tonight
he can check his results from 7.30 am but has just told me he is getting up at 10
i asked for his log on so i can check Wink
why do they do this to us Grin

goingmadinthecountry · 16/08/2012 00:26

Think the midnight thing may be an urban myth. Dd has just gone to bed - party last night so luckily she's tired tonight. She's half wishing she'd played the AS game of retakes. Whatever, she's bright and will get where she needs to be now or in the end.

Really proud of her whatever.

goingmadinthecountry · 16/08/2012 00:27

Out to lunch, is he winding you up or is it a boy thing????

out2lunch · 16/08/2012 00:30

not sure Grin i think he will stay up late tonight and he will think he will sleep till 10 but i bet he'll be up a lot earlier to check....... and ring me hopefully

gelatinous · 16/08/2012 00:47

midnight is for STEP results, not A levels.

outtolunchagain · 16/08/2012 06:40

Ds school starts emailing at 6.30am( now in other words ).Apparently in reverse order I.e. those who need the results most for clearing hear first. If everything is hunky dory you hear last. So the longer the wait the better. School is open for those who have missed at 8, people who have got grades go in at 10.30am

He hasn't emerged yet,so presumably nothing do far .He is anxious and was avoiding Facebook and TSR and anyone else for that matter but he does tend to be a bit of a pessimist. Very worried about historySad

exoticfruits · 16/08/2012 06:52

Good luck, everyone!

maddiemostmerry · 16/08/2012 06:53

Eeeeek, not long now.

Also worried about History.

outtolunchagain · 16/08/2012 07:07

Nothing yet but now he says he can't remember giving in an email address. aaagh teenagers
