17 days to go. Anyone else getting nervous about A level results day?

All the evidence suggests he'll get the grades he need for his first choice. But logic doesn't count for much at these times, in my experience, going all the way back to my own results days!

I don't understand this AAB change, why on earth have they done this, I do wonder.

outtolunchagain · 13/08/2012 12:14

iamamug ds has no insurance either, caught out by the AAB change. The most likely outcome with us will be AAC or A*AC the latter I don't think would be too bad as it would still apparently meet the AAB criteria for funding and his course is a small one which doesn't over offer so they may take him anyway. The former is not so good ,he is split at the moment between retaking (would be just the one paper as has As in all papers up until now) or reapplying next year .Worst would obviously be if he didn't manage the two As,we just need to know now I think. He's never failed to get what he needed before and dh is supremely confident but I know he feels history didn't go as well as he'd hoped

outtolunchagain · 13/08/2012 12:16

Can't really take Wednesday off as covering for someone,am off Thursday and Friday though.Think I will just shut the door and skulk in my office

iamamug · 13/08/2012 12:24

I will be working from home on Thursday for either celebrations or the alternative - Gulp! No doubt we will all be on MN supporting eachother - Good luck to you all

gelatinous · 13/08/2012 13:16

Fingers crossed for good news then iamamug, Tressy and outtolunch, keep calm and hang in there for now. Also remember, even if the worst seems to happen on the day, it often seems to turn out for the best in the end.

ucasfracas · 13/08/2012 15:29

Dreading it took, trying not to mention it, think DD thinks she is very borderline and will probably not make insurance either if she doesn't get AAB. No contingency plan, but don't think she'll go through clearing, think it will be a complete rethink of her future. Fingers crossed for us all.

badgerhead · 13/08/2012 15:34

We've been instructed to be out all day Wednesday as her college will ring them & tell them to go in early if they have to go through clearing, eek! So praying she doesn't get a phone call & has good results on Thursday. At the moment threatening she isn't going to tell us when she knows as being a little stressed I think!

gelatinous · 13/08/2012 16:03

Good grief badger. Have I understood that right that on Wednesday she might get a call saying something along the lines of: "we can't tell you anything now, but it would be a very good idea for you to come in early tomorrow"???

What kind of a nights sleep would you get after a message like that?

jalopy · 13/08/2012 16:42

If the results are released by the school on Thursday, when does UCAS confirm the uni places online? Thx.

LondonMother · 13/08/2012 17:01

I've not been through this before, jalopy, but I believe that in past years UCAS has updated Track at midnight and the website has crashed under the weight of hits at 12.01am.

Can't see my son staying up to try so we will be waiting till the morning!

OP posts:
LondonMother · 13/08/2012 17:03

OK, Track is currently closed and will be available again from 0800 BST on Thursday.

UCAS confirms places etc from Thursday morning onwards. I believe this year UCAS are sending out confirmation of places by email as soon as they informed by the relevant university. So no email first thing doesn't mean no place.

I thought we were all relaxed here but my DS has suddenly become very stressed. Our school sends their results out by email at about 7.30am so they wont have to wait too long!

Roll on Thursday.

jalopy · 13/08/2012 17:05

Thx. Good luck to all.

creamteas · 13/08/2012 17:49

I have spent all day going through the admissions in my dept. Those that meet their offer get confirmed automatically so we only look at those who have missed grades. We are now waiting for those who have insurance places to see what their firm choice are doing.

At our uni, we aim to have all the decisions in place for Thursday morning, but not all unis do this. Some hold onto just misses to see if they can get better students in clearing. We will be going into clearing for almost all subjects for AAB+ students, even ones that have never been in clearing before. There will also be more clearing places for students below this than usual (this is because we have more places to fill as virtually no one deferred entry last year). So try not to panic too much.

I can't say anything about the A level results themselves, sorry.

crisisofidentity · 13/08/2012 19:52

I'm watching here too, though ds took AS this year, it's still nervy.
Good luck to all.

Yellowtip · 13/08/2012 21:58

Certainly for the past couple of years Track is working fine at about 8am to confirm offers.

I thought the call to come in early to school meant you were going to have your photo taken for the local paper (no call in this house though, ever).

quirrelquarrel · 14/08/2012 08:52

We got a call to come in at 8:15.....was originally 9:00. I don't know why they changed the time, probably to make getting Clearing places and stuff more efficient. Do they know our results already, the schools? I just want to know so I can look forward to going on holiday! Good luck to all your kids.

AS was a really good surprise last year.....don't know about this time round. I just don't want a B in German Sad

Yellowtip · 14/08/2012 09:19

No, schools don't know the results until later on tomorrow.

outtolunchagain · 15/08/2012 07:23

Tension is definitely mounting here . GBBO provided a bit of distraction and he's taking his car to be looked at ( it has a leak) later . Apparently some people he said are staying up all night as they won't be able to sleepHmmTold him firmly that this was ridiculous and to find a good book!

LondonMother · 15/08/2012 08:53

24 hours to go.

OP posts:
cinnamonnut · 15/08/2012 08:56

If any of you are interested, some of the exam boundaries have the grade boundaries out on their websites now. (I think OCR, Edexcel and AQA.)

Have just done some calculations and don't think I got what I wanted in chemistry :(

quirrelquarrel · 15/08/2012 09:14

^ ah, you'll get 100 UMS, don't worry! memory tricks and all that

I certainly will be going to sleep.....can't think of anything worse than eight hours on TSR posting on the 'missed my offer' thread.
If I get AAA I'm going through adjustment. So I just hope I get that. To go to a lower ranked uni Hmm

eatyourveg · 15/08/2012 09:26

Burying my head in the sand isn't working anymore, I'm waking the house up 2 or 3 times a night shouting in my sleep. Blush

Firm choice is going into clearing this year which they haven't done for several years and lists his course as having places still available, hoping thats a good sign and they will take him if he drops a grade. If not then hoping his insurance will release him into clearing as he's gone off it big time and probably won't go if thats his only offer.

cinnamonnut · 15/08/2012 09:28

quirrelquarrel, just did a bit of calculation and I think I missed the A by about 3 UMS

quirrelquarrel · 15/08/2012 11:42

Oh Cinnamon :-( how can you know so exactly....but you're v. clever, it'll turn out fine. Plus unis don't mind if you have one B at AS. Cambridge might cos of the 90%+ UMS thing, but lots of other top unis will only look at your As.

Same here about my insurance- Surrey is better ranked than QMUL I think but I still don't want to go there.....
