My mum became a nanna at 36/37. She said nanna doesn't sound as old Grin

FortyFacedFuckers · 10/05/2013 17:22

My mum became a gran at 38 and she is called gran

topknob · 10/05/2013 17:25

I became a step grand mother in November, gdd's parents refer to me as nanny Amanda (my first name obviously) as gdd has three nans Grin

TheDetective · 10/05/2013 17:28

My mum insisted on Grandma when I made her one at age 42. I think it sounds old! She thinks the opposite!

MIL is Nana, which I prefer. MIL was 39 when she became a nana!

lisaro · 10/05/2013 17:31

What's age got to do with it? If you're a Grandma then so be it. Im mid 40's. Grandson is just learning Grandma. Nanna and it's variants are chavvy and sound awful. Made up names seem silly, why not just enjoy and celebrate the relationship?

usualsuspect · 10/05/2013 17:35

Nanna is chavvy?

You couldn't make it up really. Only on MN Grin

crazynanna · 10/05/2013 17:43

Hmm Thanks!

I have 5 of the little blighters, oldest being 9 and born when I was 40.
I am the chavvy 'Nanna' to 4 of them..the last one calling me by my nickname Wink

usualsuspect · 10/05/2013 17:48

Mine call me by a nickname.

I am officially Grandma though.

SconeRhymesWithGone · 10/05/2013 17:49

Yeah, thanks from me too. I have a made-up name; the name I made up as a toddler to call my grandmother, and now it is the name my grandchildren call me.

SPsCliffingAllOverMN · 10/05/2013 17:51

Nanna is chavvy Grin

Jesus I've heard it all now. Guess my sons great great grandmother aged 92 is chavvy as she is known as something other then grandma?

I would mention the name but it might either out me or lead to questions Grin

crazynanna · 10/05/2013 17:52

Your grandchildren call you Usual, Usual ? Grin

usualsuspect · 10/05/2013 17:53

My first dgs couldn't say grandma, I am known by the name he made up by all of my grandchildren now.

It's not silly. It's lovely.

SPsCliffingAllOverMN · 10/05/2013 17:54

Usual My son calls my mum Nan nan and my stepdad Gan Gan. He decided. The chavvy little boy! Grin

usualsuspect · 10/05/2013 17:54

SPsCliffingAllOverMN · 10/05/2013 17:58

Chavy 92 year old small Irish woman obviously usual Everyone calls her this certain name, her sons, grandchildren, great grabdchildrena dn then my son.

She must be the queen if chavs at that age

MrsHiddleston · 10/05/2013 17:58

My mum is a young grandmother. Mine and my brother's call her Grandma. Smile

MrsHiddleston · 10/05/2013 18:00

I just realised you're 35... I'm that age and my DS is 3! Grin. So grandma is too old for you... Nanny is probably the youngest sounding.

turkeyboots · 10/05/2013 18:04

It goes through fashions I think. My Granny renamed herself Nana when I was 5. She thought Granny was too old fashioned. And at 93 doesn't even know the word Chav.

DC have 4 grandmothers - we had a Nana, a Gran, a Granny and Momar (which is Swedish). All picked the one which seemed youngest to them!

Bunbaker · 10/05/2013 18:11

Granny first name? eg Granny Laura

Yonilovesboni · 10/05/2013 18:19

I love the 'mema' sounds very affectionate. Use this one op!!Wink

macreturnofthe · 10/05/2013 19:39

i can't believe you are all having this conversation when it is obvious that the op must insist on being called:

Grandmama (in the most old fashioned way possible)

I would just to see other peoples expressions (but then I am a bit odd!!)

spidersandslugs · 10/05/2013 20:20

Nanny is the name given to a female goat Grin I agree, I think it's mainly used by chavs.

When I become a grandmother, I'll be Granma, Granny or Gran. Much more refined.

usualsuspect · 10/05/2013 21:01

Stop with the chav bollocks.
