nana?

Ewe · 10/10/2009 13:41

My Mum isn't quite as young as you but is only in her 40s and she is called Nanny or Nana.

mamadiva · 10/10/2009 13:44

My mum became 'Granny' at 36 3 years ago

We do get funny looks sometimes when DS shouts on her but there is 2 reasons for that, she does actually look about 30 (she's now 40) and she did have twins 8 months before he was born so she has 3 x 3 year olds shouting different names at her when we are out LOL

My Gran was 35 when I was born and I have always called her 'mum' because she used to get embarrassed

Congrats BTW!

nickelbabe · 10/10/2009 13:47

how about mama (pronounced mamm-ar or momm-ar)

that sounds a bit younger cos it could almost be another name for mum....

mamadiva · 10/10/2009 13:49

I would say right enough, be warned about encouraging 'mum' like names because as I say I have never been able to break the habit and at 22 I still confuse people talking about my mum and my other mum

ihatethecold · 10/10/2009 16:41

i would feel bad using a mum type name as thats for my DIL..
nana sounds sooo old
my youngest is only 6..

all the female grandparetns wanted to be a 'nan' rather than a gran when i had my children - i think this is becuae grandma sounds rather rigid and nana sounds cuddly?

anyway to sort out confusion is was nanna + first name.

its an option.

i think i want to be a grandma - for the aforementioned reasons - i wouldn't mind being the mean granny

GhostWriter · 10/10/2009 16:52

My MIL was adamant she didn't want to be a 'Grandma' or similar (45 when I got pg). She is 'mamgu' which is Welsh for Grandmother (she is half welsh!). Now, she says she actually doesn't care what dd calls her as she's so proud to be her grandmother that the name doesn't matter, it's the role that's important. She's mamgu now though and I quite like it.

Nan, where I live, is considered common. Not sure why. Silly isn't it?

WailingGhoshe · 10/10/2009 16:52

I was a Nan at 35, I didnt want Grandma, that sounded too old to me

ihatethecold · 10/10/2009 17:33

thanks guys, i think i prefer grandma to nan though, im loving the welsh version but sadly i have no links to the lovely place. although i am half indian, so i must find out what the word is in either hindi or indian punjabi.. any one know so i dont have to google it

Little Indian boy I know calls his grandmother 'Mema'. Not sure of origin, pronounced 'meemar'.

pranma · 18/10/2009 15:43

Just said on other thread my grandma was called Mother

leylandmommar · 05/05/2011 16:32

Hi my granddaughters call me mommar they could not say grandma so i got called mommar and they all call it me now i did not want to be called nana because i felt old and i was in my forties but 6 years on they call me mommar

SusanneLinder · 10/05/2011 11:01

I am in my 40's and prefer to be Gran. Hate Grandma and never liked Nan or Nanna

lisaro · 28/11/2011 23:55

Posted on another thread about this. I'm (a young) mid 40's, first grandchild due April. Whatever age, I would be Grandma, as that's what I am. Granny sounds old and toothless, Gran is abrupt, Nanny is an employee and Nana just sounds silly and tacky.

Tas1 · 07/01/2012 19:28

I'm 44 and have 3 grandchildren.
I wanted to be called Nanna but somehow it turned into Nanny.

2old2beamum · 09/01/2012 18:15

Of Russian descent I called her Babushka however I am called Grandma :(

ElizaPoe · 12/01/2012 13:13

Not a young grandmother myself, and hubby and I are called by our Christian names by the little ones, they really like it and we look after some of or grandchildren 3 days of the week. It really doesn't feel odd although it does surprise some people.

Mummy2FE · 04/02/2012 19:53

Nanny or Nannie?

Grannylipstick · 12/06/2012 21:12

I can't bare the name nanny. I am a mum of 5 (eldest 31 youngest 14). It seems to be the trend that younger grandmothers are choosing the name nanny. I am a grannie and very proud to be one.

Campari · 22/10/2012 14:39

Nanna Banana.

Nightwish · 22/10/2012 14:46

Both my DM and MIL became a grandmother at 39, they are both called Nanny.

aderynlas · 23/10/2012 13:07

Nannie for me, though they do all come up with their own variations as they grow up.

Gransey · 04/11/2012 09:37

Hello, my name is Lynsey and I'm called Gransey. my DGD also has a Granny, Great Grandma, Nanny and Big Nanny, so using part of my name seems to be helpful for DGD.

TalkUsernameYoudLike · 10/05/2013 16:12

My 45yo Mum is Nanny.
