First thread was started by Trisagion on Wed 30-Oct-13 15:18:17

"
This is to ask for the help of all Mumsnet members, most especially anyone who lives in the Haute Savoie departement.

One of our members, Carol Sheridan, is missing. She is a keen and intrepid hiker and explores the high mountains of the area. She is experienced and resourceful but neither her family nor many friends have had any communication with her since Saturday 27 October.

She may be lost or perhaps had an accident and be awaiting rescue.

She is 73, five foot five tall and drives a black Fiat Panda registration AZ522AP

If you have any information on Carol's whereabouts or the location of her car please contact French Police and her daughter Fiona Conyers [note from MNHQ, we've now removed the email address to respect the family's wish for privacy]

HQ are hoping to post the MISSING poster circulated by her family on here."

Keeping all my thoughts in France for Carol and her family

An actual photograph as found? where?

PsammeadPaintedTheLion · 04/11/2013 12:57

A photograph of the car, taken by journos. On the link I provided. The same link I gave a few hours ago. Now a few photos are up. It would seem to make the car discovery fairly certain.

ZingWantsCake · 04/11/2013 13:02

sorry I can't see any photos apart from the top one of Carol with GDs.

just a short article

She looks like a lovely person. I really feel for her daughter and GC.

Bluebirdonmyshoulder · 04/11/2013 13:08

A poster named nightowl has just posted the following on GN. Posting here as I know some posters are 'on the ground' and this might be very useful info for the rescuers.

Sorry if this has been suggested but I can't check as I have my hands full with DGS. On the thread Carol started about walking tips she said that she always marks her route as she goes along with sticks formed into a triangle pointing in the direction she has come from, so she is able to find her way back if she gets lost. If the searchers find anything like this it may help to mark her route.

ZingWantsCake · 04/11/2013 13:09

Psammy
I'm on phone, not working.
time to disappoint kids (inset day) and hog pc again.

this is excellent news, it really is her car then, isn't it?

I saw on thr GN update link that she'd done a walk in that area before and planned to do it again.

another post linked another of her pp about leaving rock or twig triangles to lead her back to her car at "junctions" in the woods as she had been lost a few times before.

I think these information are being passed on and will certainly be helpful.

Yes, it seems the gransnet member granjura is completely on the case and has some kind of influence/contact with the french police. She is doing sterling work over there. I think she's checking that thread regularly and will recieve these tid-bits of information which people are posting, and will be in a position to get the, to the correct authorities.

The best we can do is think positive.

Do remember that Carol has family in new zealand, so any news would first be relayed to her (one hopes) so, due to time zones, it may be a while before we heat anything.

Thumbwitch · 04/11/2013 13:12

Goodness, I know it's different countries and languages and all but still, "she has given no sign of life since 27 October" is a bit rough to read!
(unless there is a nicer translation of that phrase...)

magimedi · 04/11/2013 13:16

I 'know' granjura from several French forums (have never met her). She's someone I would really want on the case if it were me. She & Carol are friends & don't live too far apart.

Granjura is working tirelessly with the authorities. Fluent in both English & French &, I suspect, a couple of other languages.

I think that's because she wouldn't pick up the phone/call for her.

but if she had a fall she could have dropped her phone and unable to retrieve it due to where the phone fell or an injury.

it just means she is unable to make contact.
yes, it's hard to read, but we must hope for the best version of events.

well, if anyone ever needed a Hungarian to translate let me know!

OP posts:
Bluebirdonmyshoulder · 04/11/2013 13:18

Yes, was sure someone would be checking both threads but just want to make sure!

Granjura is doing a wonderful job, so glad there's someone there.

Tiredmumno1 · 04/11/2013 13:19

Still praying for some positive news.

I know it's not much, but Thanks for those involved in the search, you are all wonderful xx

ZingWantsCake · 04/11/2013 13:20

we should ask HQ to do a permanent "Skill" board.
not for advertising your services, but for free info/help etc.

to know who to ask.

it would've been so useful to go there and ask for French translators etc.

PsammeadPaintedTheLion · 04/11/2013 13:22

That's a bloody good idea actually, Zing!

magimedi · 04/11/2013 13:23

From the alpes.france3.fr website just now:

My translations skills are not brilliant but it seems the car was found at 9am (French time, so 8am here). About 20 or so police & firecrew (slightly different to firecrew in UK, they do a lot of this stuff) are searching. Can't do anything aerial due to bad weather.

The final sentence literally translates as t: 'the theory of an accident is now prefered' but I don't think I've got that quite right.

I am off out for a few hours. I can't do anything sat her pressing F5.

magimedi · 04/11/2013 13:23

Zing I think that's a great idea - skills board that is.

ZingWantsCake · 04/11/2013 13:29

thanks for rough translation magi
