Just read all this, really hoping everything is ok for you charlotte.

Quattrocento · 19/04/2010 18:21

I agree with Aitch

Am veteran of two ectopic pregnancies and one burst tube. Symptoms sounded exactly like yours - seriously agonising pain, worse than labour pains - which seemed to go down after 3 hours or so. They had gone down because the tube had burst. Was misdiagnosed by doctor who insisted it was cystitis (despite vociferous protests from me). Ended up in A&E and nearly died.

IGNORE THE GP - GO FOR A SCAN

BosomsByTheSea · 19/04/2010 18:21

Hope you're ok.

I was lucky with my EP - it was spotted by my great GP, ambulanced to A and E, emergency surgery - lost 3 1/2 pints of blood internally. Was touch and go for a while.

Glad you are in the right place.

TiggyR · 19/04/2010 19:15

Spooky, this happened to me a few years ago for no apparent reason - I'd never really suffered with my periods before, and then for about a year on and off I started having horrendous pain with them, like early labour pains, and throbbing in my legs like they were going to explode. I then went on to develop shooting and stabbing pains up my vagina that could literally knock me off my feet they were so severe, and deep pain where my ovaries were. this could happen at any time of the month - when I was having a really bad week I would limp and drag my leg, and I had to crawl upstairs on my hands and knees! I eventually had to have an operation to remove 'adhesions' on my ovaries which is what endometriosis is, in simple terms, though I never got a formal diagnosis, which is quite diffcult apparently, but I was warned it may recur. It can come on at any time, especially after children so as soon as you are able I would go to the GP and ask to be checked out.

I can understand why you burst into tears, struggling with persistent pain when you are trying to look after little ones is very tough. Get well soon!

differentID · 19/04/2010 19:17

Hope you are ok this evening.

TiggyR · 19/04/2010 19:18

Sorry, just read rest of thread and see that ectopic is still a possibility. Even if you have had a period since you last had sex doesn't mean you can't be pregnant! Ignore my last post until you know for sure it's not ectopic! Don't leave it, as there may be no time to waste - go to A&E if necessary.

How long would SC have to be at the hospital if it has been an ectopic?

ItsAllaBitNoisy · 19/04/2010 19:26

A few days at least if it's ruptured. It's quite serious surgery.

BosomsByTheSea · 19/04/2010 19:30

I was in for 6 days after mine.
She's a dedicated MNer - she might be back on here tomorrow, in hospital or not!

AitchTwoZone · 19/04/2010 19:30

overnight at least if she's gone to surgery.

i wasn't misdiagnosed, quattro, if anything i was treated a little too early with methotrexate... but having said that i only phoned my gp out of courtesy to tell him i was on my way to the hospital, had i listened to him i would have been mis-diagnosed.

it's just weird, i think, how common eps are, and yet how ignorant docs are about them. it's one in a hundred pgs. so if one in four or five is lost to miscarriage, one in a hundred is still really a lot.

BertieBotts · 19/04/2010 19:33

I was thinking that, Quattro. It seems like a fairly simple thing to be aware of, too - and easy enough to rule out with a pregnancy test (and a scan if positive, but again not a huge deal) I seem to remember that I was aware of the idea of an ectopic pregnancy from quite young - is the chance increased if you are on the pill or something? It was either at the FP clinic when I got the pill, or at school during sex ed that I learnt about it, anyway.

ItsAllaBitNoisy · 19/04/2010 19:33

I think I was in for about 6 or 7 days. I lost a tube and was lucky not to lose an ovary.

MiniMarmite · 19/04/2010 19:35

Just been reading this thread, SC thinking of you and hope you are ok.

Aitch (and everyone else), great advice and you have most likely saved SC's life today, I'm so sorry that you know so much about this for the reason that you do.

Quattro I agree, I wonder if we can have this added to the Mumsnet Campaigns. I've had two cases of pain in early preg where I now realise that I should have been scanned immediately in case of ectopic pregnancy and was not. Thankfully I did not have an ectopic (although, sadly, one was a MC).

What brought it home to me was when the EPU doc said "Any pain in early pregnancy we assume is ectopic until proven otherwise" - this was certainly not the message I had received from my GP and NHS direct when I asked for help due to pain. I really believe this is the message women should be getting so that they know to insist on seeking help.

Quattrocento · 19/04/2010 19:36

I was supposed to stay in hospital for a week, but discharged myself after four days. It's a bit noisy in hospital, isn't it? And I kept running out of books.
