Aspartame has been given a 'posh' new name, but don't be fooled, this stuff is toxic.

I don't know how many other parents ban this stuff from their Dc's diet.
I don't let it pass my Dc's lips if I can help it.
The link makes some interesting reading.

TOXIC

wow! its amazing what's legal isn't it, thanks for the information solo

CheerfulYank · 18/02/2010 01:24

Thanks for the update-I try not to eat or give DS anything to eat that isn't food...and believe me, aspartame doesn't qualify.

BrahmsThirdRacket · 18/02/2010 01:30

Oh God, I have just discovered the amazingness of Diet Coke - so sweet, but consisting, apparently, of nothing: how can this be?

Another thing to give up.

CardyMow · 18/02/2010 01:34

. My family avoid aspartame as it's a neurotoxin, and both me and my DD have epilepsy.

solo · 18/02/2010 02:07

Sorry!

They do like hiding things, don't they, the manufacturers! At least I know to look out for it though.

solo · 18/02/2010 02:27

I must admit, I've passed this info on for years and I'm amazed at how many of my friends just shrug and continue to feed their lo's the offending foods/drinks.

Horrible stuff. I've had the same experience, solo. Can't understand why people think it's ok to feed this stuff to their children. Have always avoided it but I was shocked and a little sceptical when another MNetter told me that pilots are warned to avoid aspartame. It's true though!

solo · 18/02/2010 02:57

I'm sure that people think it's ok because these big manufacturers of food stuffs are using it.
My 'drink' used to be diet coke. I liked it a lot. I don't like it at all these days because my tastes have changed ~ except when I was pg with Dd and I just had to have it. I have ME and have had it for more than 10 years and I have often wondered if aspartame could have contributed toward my getting it iykwim.
My Ds knows I won't let himn have aspartame, but he always hankers after coke and that kind of thing and I do feel for him, but I want my Dc's to be as healthy as possible ~ for life ~ all of their lives.

Thanks for sharing that. I've just made choc jello with it in as I bought the low fat version by mistake, I don't normally touch it, I'll be throwing the leftovers in the bin.

CardyMow · 18/02/2010 03:03

We've avoided aspartame for 3.5yrs now since my Neurologist advised us to. Don't think the children even remember what anything with it in tastes like!

Coldhands · 18/02/2010 10:34

Solo why do you think it could have contributed to your M.E.? I have it too and I am interested in why you think this.

Colhands, I only recall something I read re the neurological problems it can/does cause. There was something in a similar report to the link I put here that suggested a link with MS and there are a lot of similarities between ME and MS. I will see if I can find it, but I have a feeling it's on another pc hard drive that I can't access.

Avril, there has been a lot of evidence brought up.
Have a look at THIS

This link gives some of the same info I read back in 2004 and it is also dated that year, so it could be of the same or similar report.

WowOoo · 18/02/2010 13:10

Ta for that info Solo. We usually avoid anything sweetened but DH does shopping on rare occasions and brings home some suspect stuff!

solo · 18/02/2010 13:15

Sugar is far better than artificial sweeteners apparently.

This was one of the first things I learn't at university, it has always stuck with me
and I cringe when people think its better to offer diet drinks to children or anybody else for that matter

TheFirstLady · 18/02/2010 16:53

Blimey there aren't half some nutters on that blog you linked to, Solo.

fishie · 18/02/2010 16:55

thanks. poor ds already has to stand patiently in front of the drinks area of shop while i peer at all the small print to find one which isn't 'poisonous'.

KentuckyFriedPenguin · 18/02/2010 16:55

I din't now Phenylalanine was Aspartame but always wondered why there needed to be awrning of it!

Thank you!

Thankfully i try and limit the amount of aspartame my DCs have.

TheFirstLady · 18/02/2010 16:56

According to Wiki, which is probably a more reliable source than most of those you linked to, aspartame is perfectly safe. Lots of links on here to back that up.

fishie · 18/02/2010 17:02

but firstlady your link says it is disputed! how on earth can you claim it is more reliable?
