Aspartame has been given a 'posh' new name, but don't be fooled, this stuff is toxic.

I don't know how many other parents ban this stuff from their Dc's diet.
I don't let it pass my Dc's lips if I can help it.
The link makes some interesting reading.

Shite bastards! Thanks for drawing attention to it Solo - am so sick of them peddling this toxic shit. ARGH!

BlackLetterDay · 22/02/2010 00:50

I do try to avoid aspartame for the kids(just in case), although not always. For me I drink a shedload of diet coke tbh. I have never seen a reputable site linked, free from woo and reiki or whatever linked in the argument about aspartame. I really honestly don't care if it's doing me harm, I do things (like smoking) that I know cause me harm, but I still do them. That probably makes me a terible person but meh.

solo · 22/02/2010 01:11

Not really sure why you've posted BLD.

If you don't care, don't post.

FWIW, snopes has some links which appear to refute some of the claims:

www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/aspartame.asp

drloves8 · 23/02/2010 16:24

its shocking how many things have artificial sweeteners in them. its getting really hard to find stuff without it. makes doing the groceries take twice as long, and twice as hard.
plus they taste boggin.
why fill our foods/drinks full of crap in the first place ?

solo · 23/02/2010 17:15

No idea drloves8. I suppose it's about money.

Well, lucy, it's up to the individual, same as getting the swine flu jab ~ another thing I'm avoiding. I haven't looked at the snopes ink yet, but will do. I doubt it'll change my mind though. I saw a marked improvement in my Ds when I cut it out tbh.

amino sweet

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 23/02/2010 17:24

Many thanks for that Solo, we're an aspartame free house here.

verytellytubby · 23/02/2010 17:29

Thanks for the info. I avoid aspartame (sp) as well. I had a major diet coke habit and weaned myself off it completely.

What's the link and chewing gum & depression. More details or links please. DH chews a lot of gum (and drinks coffee) and been suffering from bad depression.

paisleyleaf · 23/02/2010 17:30

Thankyou solo, I'm glad to know about the name change
and wouldn't have done if I hadn't read this.
How sneaky!

solo · 24/02/2010 01:09

All I know is what I read in my first link. Someone I mentioned that too looked as though a veil had been lifted from their eyes in recognition though, so maybe there is something in it.

thanks! i hate that stuff and never feed it to my kids.

dd1 has had it at parties in drinks. she has severe dyspraxia and muscle spasms and this stuff sends her into big time spasms.

yama · 27/02/2010 16:10

Thanks Solo - we avoid too. DD automatically askes for milk or water wherever we are. Kids tend not to crave what they do not eat/drink. (I'll allow the exception of chocolate to prove the rule - dark of course.)

Can I hijack slightly please and ask you about swine flu jab. I have ignored two offers to have my dd (4) vaccinated and am pregnant. Everyone I know seems to have done as they were told have had the jabs. Why are you avoiding?

Claire236 · 27/02/2010 16:16

Most mums I know will let their children drink diet coke & the like but not the normal version which I find bizarre. Had a conversation last night with one of them who said there was no proof artificial sweeteners were harmful. I don't let ds drink fizzy drinks & try to avoid artificial sweeteners in anything else. I do often find though that it's difficult to find things like squash which don't have artificial sweeteners in them. I would much rather ds had sugar in moderation than shedloads of chemicals but no sugar.

mears · 27/02/2010 16:26

I always avoided artificial sewwtwners like the plague. My children never got anything to eat or drink that had asparteme in it. My friends thought I was bonkers. I prefereed my children having sugar whhich was natural and they took good care of their teeth, so fillings were not a probel.

All changed when my DS3 became insulin dependent diabetic at the age of 16, 3 years ago. Sugar is not an option for him...

missmoopy · 27/02/2010 16:26

Thankyou for that info OP as my dd (5) is terribly intolerant to the evil crap that is aspartamine - she gets hideous pins and needles, awful temper and wets herself. We have completely cut it out of her diet. The other thing to be aware of is that aspartamine is often in childrens meds - we found some in her antibiotics!

nickelbabe · 27/02/2010 16:29

you're right, Claire: i once stood in front of the display in Sainsbury's and checked every single bottle of cordial and not one had sugar rather than aspartame.
it's so annoying. especially with Robinson's that says "no artificial additives".

and Asda don't have that many fizzy pop drinks that don't have it in.

sugar is sooooo much better for you!

although, i generally avoid cordial and fizzy pop. (i drink water and juice if i want a refreshing cold drink that isn't milk)

but OH drinks the stuff all the time.
