Erm no because the one good fag, the one you hanker after tends to only appear when you least expect it. And if its so good why does she only have 2 a night? Why not all day?

charliecat · 31/07/2005 22:05

I wouldnt because I can happily live without them.

I think we know the same woman

evansmummy · 31/07/2005 22:13

If I could limit myself to one a day and not worry about it at all the rest o the day? YES I would smoke! But I too know that that would be completely impossible for me. I used to smoke 20 Marlboro Lights a day until I moved to france five years ago, then smoked about 10 Drum rollies a day with my husband til I got pregnant. Then recently I've gone back to the brand I started out with when I was 14, Marlboro. My aunt smokes Silk Cut, which stink, but they have nicotine in them, so I really don't care.

I haven't smoked any yet, btw. She's not home yet, though.

Talking about smoking is making it worse

Fixating on a Cigarette

----------------

What happens to some people is that when they are off smoking for a certain time period they start fixating on a cigarette. By that I mean they forget all the bad cigarettes they ever smoked, they forget the ones they smoked without ever really thinking about them even at the time they were being smoked, and they start to remember and focus on one good cigarette. It may be one they smoked 20 years earlier but it was a good one and they now want one again.

It's a common tactic for the ex-smokers to try and tell themselves that they do not really want that "good" cigarette. Well, the problem is, at that moment they really do want it. An internal debate erupts, "I want one, no I don't, one sounds great, no it doesn't, oh just one, not just one!" The problem is that if the ex-smoker's focus is on just "one" cigarette then there is no clear-cut winning side to the debate. The ex-smoker needs to change the internal discussion.

Don't say that you don?t want one when you do, rather acknowledge the desire but ask yourself, "Do I want all the other cigarettes that go with it. Then, do I want the package deal that goes with the others? The expense, social stigma, smell, health effects, possible loss of life. Do I want to go back to smoking, full-fledged, until it cripples and kills me?"

Stated like this it normally is not a back and forth debate. The answer will normally be, "No, I don?t want to smoke under these terms," and those are the only terms that a cigarette comes with.

Normally if viewed like this the debate is over almost immediately after being pulled into focus. Again, if the focus is only one, you can drive yourself nuts throughout the entire day. If you focus on the whole package deal, you will walk away from the moment relieved to still be smoke free and sufficiently reinforced to NEVER TAKE ANOTHER PUFF!

evansmummy · 31/07/2005 22:25

Thanks for that, cc. I think you've posted it before nut when I get fixated, boy do I get fixated!

The problem I have at the mo, is that when I ask myself if I want all the others that come with the one, I say 'yes'. I shouldn't, but I do. I don't want just one, I want loads, a whole pack. One with my glass of wine, then one with a hot chocolate before bed, then one with my tea in the morning, then one when ds has a nap, then one with coffee after lunch etc etc. I'm not fixating on the 'just one', but on them all...

Such wisdom that I am incapable of processing at the moment, mll.

I'm a dirty addict, scuttling around and gagging for her fix at the moment...

fionagib · 31/07/2005 23:46

Hi all
Have been away at my mum's most of week on west coast of scotland, and am about to head down to devon for a week but just wanted to report a FAGLESS SUMMER... 2 weeks of hols to go in scotland, have not really wanted a fag, but am still lozzied up (ie sucking a niccie lozenge) most of the time, apart from when eating & sleeping...

dropinthe · 01/08/2005 09:59

Well done FGIB-I managed recently to quit the lozzies although have a pack in the house which am going to give to my addicted mother tommorrow-they keep calling my name like the fags did but I am resisting because I know if I have just one I will be back on them as saw them as my replacement treat after food, with wine etc..
MLL-if I could just stick to 2 fags a night I probably would still smoke them but as everyone else has said I just couldnt go without in the daytime.
With regards to coping with my kids I'm managing just with the help of MIL/DIL and my mum is down from Yorkshire tommorrow for a week-I have found the times when I have been on my own with boys I have done far too much(I'm supposed to be resting my knee most of the day)and really regretted it as my leg has been throbbing for hours afterwards.
MML-I was serious about a visit if you fancy it maybe in a week or two?-I can manage some lunch-the kids can look after themselves although have completely forgotton how old your daughter is now!!Derr!

dropinthe · 01/08/2005 10:01

Forgot to congratulate evansmum for doing so well-a week without fags -it gets easier slowly now day by day and you will start thinking and feeling more like a non-smoker not just someone who has "given up"!

lunachic · 01/08/2005 10:09

charliecat · 01/08/2005 10:25

Day 15 for me today and according to my quit counter :

I have been quit for 1 Week, 6 Days, 16 hours, 24 minutes and 47 seconds (13 days). I have saved £51.30 by not smoking 205 cigarettes. I have saved 17 hours and 5 minutes of my life. My Quit Date: 18/07/2005 18:30

This is based on 15 ciggies a day - my sister who stopped with me was on about 25 and has saved nearly 100 quid!!

I have definitely put weight on going to have to think about stopping the munching soon!

My next big challenge is girly night out where we tend to get mortal drunk and a few of the girls smoke!

I havent even had a patch on for 2 days now w9ohoo

keepitup everyone xxxxxxx
