Anyway, welcome to everyone to our healthy eating thread - trying to lose weight or just to life a healthier lifestyle (and chatting inanely along the way).

Anyone and everyone welcome, just so long as you're nice! We are not a clique and welcome newcomers, so please join us! But beware - this thread moves very fast - just leap right in

Hopefully this one will fill up particularly quickly so we can lose this rather shit title

I am going to do a tomato and (half-fat) mozzarella salad when I get home and then later some spaghetti carbonara (not as fattening as it sounds - I don't use cream) and I'll have a small portion with some crunchy green stuff.

Maybe. I am always starving when I get home from work and tomatoes sound like a good plan.

vacaloca · 06/10/2009 14:20

Not a very good lunch but it had to be eaten by someone and it's only me in the house: mashed potato and roast beef. Followed by banana. Hardly diet stuff but I still got that unfinished feeling.

hellsbelles · 06/10/2009 14:35

Trillian - sounds yummy

I've just got the new Fay Ripley cook book - I was seduced by all the rave reviews on Amazon (probably all written by members of her family?!) - and am all geared up to do Sesame covered lamb burgers with sweet potato wedges tonight.

What do you all do about eating with your DC's - I really don't want them to pick up that I'm dieting - just have them continue to enjoy food and not get any fads about it. But if I start doing separate low fat meals then they'll notice. Am I being silly worrying about it? My plan is to just carrying on eating with them but cut out all snacks and puddings (for me!). For me I think that will make a big enough difference anyway.

TrillianSlasher · 06/10/2009 14:41

Cut out snacks/puddings, have smaller portions, choose more veg and less meat/carb in each meal, all of this works. Are you on FF hells? It can be a bit of a faff but I found calorie counting was really useful in the early days to get an idea of where all my calories were comng from (and which of them I wanted to keep and which I wanted to get rid of).

Norma - No need to be too impressed, no trekking round shops, just popped into one (with parking right outside) to pick up a new piece of pvc table cover. So rock n roll is my life

My gym is £37 per month and i go 3-4 times a week so not too bad on that basis. Seeing as we never now go out to the cinema/pub/meals out which we used to do regularly (and probably spend that in one night), i think it is worth it for me. However i have the time (ML) and it has a creche so no childcare issues. Frighteningly expensive waste of money though for people who join then never use it

Hellsbells - my DD eats my grapefruit in the morning, i have a salad when they have a sandwich, but they have lett/tom/cuc with theirs so not so different and then we eat after they have gone to bed. We all eat together at the weekend though and i'll just have one or two roast potatoes, a small portion of meat and a load of veggies. We don;t really 'do' dessert and the DD's just have yoghurt/fruit
Trills is right anout FoodFocus though as it helps you make decisions about how much of something you can have (whether 'diet' food or not)

Trills - i always have a pot of pomodorino tomatoes in the front of the fridge for snacking and love them. Expensive habit though . What do you put in your carbonara instead of cream BTW?

hellsbelles · 06/10/2009 14:58

Hi Shiney

Here HellsBelles

TheMitsubishiWarrioress · 06/10/2009 15:08

FF is 'Food Frottage' Hells and goes with the tip that if you smear it on your body you wont want to eat it afterwards

hellsbelles · 06/10/2009 15:09

Dreams - I love John Lewis too....I'm praying that they open one in a site that is being developed near us. I can't be faffed with going to the big one in Oxford street. But it is so practically perfect in every way and the online version just doesn't scratch the itch in the same way!

Thanks SazZa - got to pick up DS now! But will check it out when I get back.

hellsbelles · 06/10/2009 15:11

Themitsubishi - I thought as much . I better not check out the site that SsaZa forwarded in view of anyone.

SazZaVoom · 06/10/2009 15:18

LOL TMW . My link is obviously faulty as it is nothing so exciting

I actually like JL online, especially as our nearest is 20 miles away. However not loving it so much since they stopped free delivery

TrillianSlasher · 06/10/2009 15:35

Carbonara a la Trills (for 2)
bacon (half a packet)
egg (2 yolks, 1 whole)
parmesan (as much as seems right)
pepper
cream is optional
half a small glass of wine is also optional
a spoonful of half-fat creme fraiche is good instead of the cream though
200g pasta if no-one is on a diet, less if they are

put kettle on to boil
chop bacon small, fry
put pasta in boiling water, boil for 10 mins
'deglaze' bacon pan with wine if using, with a bit of the pasta water if not
drain pasta, put in bacon pan (off heat), swirl around, add egg and parmesan and pepper and cream/creme fraiche if using
the heat of the pasta cooks the egg enough, if you put it on the heat you'll get scrambly eggs, not so nice

TrillianSlasher · 06/10/2009 15:36

Point me to the recipe thread and I'll put it on there.

NormaSknockers · 06/10/2009 15:40

Afternoon all

Dinner sounds yum Trills! Doing tomato & basil chicken pasta for dinner, I am sooooooo hungry

Just had one of my worst fears realised! Popped out with the DC & we went on the train, when I get off the train I have to lift DSs pram off then lift DD off (she's well trained to hold onto the rail by the door & not let go) was just about to grab DD when the train doors beeped & starting closing, managed the reach in & grab her & the train guard realised what had happened & apologised profusely. Gave me a heart attack though

TheMitsubishiWarrioress · 06/10/2009 15:53

My heart is pounding for you Norma....they are good life lessons (as long as they don't go too wrong but they make you feel sick all the same.

TheMitsubishiWarrioress · 06/10/2009 15:54

I might try that Trills, sounds yummy.

TrillianSlasher · 06/10/2009 16:13

Posted on our recipe thread.

DreamsInBinary · 06/10/2009 16:14

Jesus, Norma, my heart stopped for a moment there

NormaSknockers · 06/10/2009 16:14

Made my heart leap into my throat!

That does sound rather yummy Trills I'm planning on philadelphia smoked salmon tagliatelle tomorrow!

hellsbelles · 06/10/2009 16:18

Norma how horrible for you

trillian that really does sound delicious- I'm going to try it this week

SqueezyCheesyPumpkin · 06/10/2009 16:25

Afternoon y'all

Did someone have a butternut squash and sweet potato soup recipe? It sort of rang a bell but can't see it on recipe thread. Did my online shop and have bought lots of fresh and healthy things, planning on making lots of veggie dishes and lots of soups.

PS, Trills, I LOVE tomato and Mozarella salad......a sprinkle of black pepper and a teeny splash of olive oil, can't beat it for quickness and deliciousness

SqueezyCheesyPumpkin · 06/10/2009 16:28

Saz - your recipes look delicious!

Oh I am a pain but does anyone have the one with soft cheese, mushrooms and toast handy? Was going to make it too but changing the mushrooms to peppers.

TrillianSlasher · 06/10/2009 16:28

Eating pineapple right now.

We have a mahoosive basil plant on the windowsill which goes nicely with the tomatoes.
