Hi everyone, and congrats to those who did so well over the weekend. I was trying to post a new message on the runners thread, but couldn't because I think there were too many messages (over 800). I have a beginner's question. I ran (walked/ran) everyday for 1 week, then missed 1 week, and then went out this morning, and found that I could not run at all. My ankles are in severe pain when I run, but strangely do not hurt at all when I walk. So I ended up walking the whole way. I just bought new trainers - but I can't imagine that's the problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks - yeah I will try our locak council run gym. Think they do a pay as you go tariff.

fionagib · 25/05/2005 17:43

Hope you feel much better soon northener. How frustrating for you.

Potty1 · 26/05/2005 14:19

Received this today - Women's Running Survival guide some useful stuff for beginners and good links at the bottom.

Gizmo · 26/05/2005 15:07

Hello everyone.

Northerner, a couple of links for you: this one gives a description of the 'classic' shin splints condition and some techniques for dealing with it, while this one covers shin soreness generally and what to do. Good news is that the muscles etc can be 'conditioned' so that shin splints don't occur again, but the bad news is that you have to do this v..e...r....y..... slowly or you run the risk of them flaring up again. I hope you can find something exciting to do while you're working on it.

I had them briefly the first time I ever did any formal running and I was given two stretches: one the classic 'pushing the wall' stretch, for the lower calf muscle and the other was simply kneeling on the floor, with my bum between my heels.

Hey Potty1, way to go! Your race sounds a bit like 'We're going on a bear hunt'. Although I trust without the bears. Does anyone else think race organisers had a very warped sense of humour? I mean 'fun run' what's that about? Who's having fun?

Good to hear from you, too, Puddle, don't worry, there are plenty more 5k's out there....

northerner · 26/05/2005 15:18

Thanks for those links Gizmo.

Potty1 · 26/05/2005 18:57

Gizmo - that book was ds2's fave - and yes that's just what it was like . Feeling better today though and just sympathising with dh who signed up for all three of races. Ha ha!!

fionagib · 27/05/2005 00:29

swishy, swashy, potty1!

Been feeling a bit leg-achy so just had easyish 30 min run today. Am thinking had better get some distance in before summer hols... (gotta be able to run 20k by sept...)

fionagib · 31/05/2005 09:24

It's a bit quiet around these parts... how's everyone doing?

Gizmo · 31/05/2005 09:33

Ah, disasterous weekend, running wise. I didn't get out once, not even hashing last night. So my last run is now nearly 10 days away.

On the bright side, DS is now over the chickenpox (delightfully scabby, bless him)and I am back to my normal routine, so I can finally start the '45 minutes or bust' experiment.

This week's schedule:

Tues: rest (!)
Wed: 2M warm-up, then 8 x 400m or 75 secs, with 400m or 2-3 min recoveries, then 2M cool-down
Thurs: 4-7 miles slow
Fri: 2M easy, then 3 x 1M or 6 mins at 80-85%, with 800m or 3-4 min recoveries, then 2M easy
Sat: rest
Sun: 10 miles long slow run

It looks a bit torturous but I'm going to rely heavily on a HRM to keep the pain down to manageable levels, particularly this week. Just writing it down has made me feel a bit nervous, especially as I now can't back out of it.

If I hit 'post', I'll have committed myself....

Gizmo · 31/05/2005 09:33

Gawd, I'm a fool unto myself.....

potty1 · 31/05/2005 09:40

Gizmo - committed or need committing? lol

Went out Sunday, did 40 mins flat course, first half rubbish, better second 20 as per usual. Just about to get my kit on for a short dash this morning, will be doing the same on Thursday and aiming for the hour on Sunday - unchartered territory .

Great weather here.

Gizmo · 31/05/2005 09:50

Definitely need committing! At the moment it would count as a nice, quiet holiday

It is a beautiful day here too, Potty1 so I am quietly jealous of you getting out - hope your run is fine and fast. If you run with music it's the sort of day here that cries out for something vaguely californian: 'Lovely day' or 'Free falling' or something.

However, I must pull myself together and return to the fascinating task of working out how the world market for electricity meters works....anyone know anything about ANSI standard meters????

charliecat · 31/05/2005 10:06

Hello Fg! Let me know how your getting on over on the other thread. have you heard from MM?

lapsedrunner · 31/05/2005 10:23

I too have managed a run (or stagger) this morning with the dog, about 40mins all off road in woodland and hilly (walked last 200m up hill ). It was wet and windy which was actually really nice as it has been 33'C here since Sat. My first run for a few days.

potty1 · 31/05/2005 11:06

I'm back! 28 mins for 5k, wahey! Now v.knackered and sweaty. It was lovely along the canal, loads of boats coming back from a festival at the weekend - only problem is negotiating all the wandering dogs.

Gizmo - no clue about electric meters sorry

Beetroot, you poor thing! How did you do that?

I hope you get a large and sympathy inducing plaster - console yourself that you can now spend the next 6 weeks telling everyone of the record beating time you would have racked up in the GNR had the fates not been against you etc etc.

Hmmmm, bl**dy walls. I was in A&E over the weekend (long story involving DH and power saw - you can probably guess the rest)and was speculating on how many people must have been involved in accidents involving power tools over the bank holiday weekend. Never thought to include walls, but actually I bet loads of people hurt themselves on them every year: they should be banned

I fell off a sofa and broke my ankle once years ago, and was mortified to discover I was one of over 20,000 sofa related injuries for that year alone. Dangerous things, sofas.

Arabica · 31/05/2005 22:02

Sorry to hear about the injuries and hope you're better soon. I remember being in A&E once (had been knocked off bike) and in the next cubicle was a jogger with a very sore head & a v red face--he had jogged into a lamp-post! (I should add this was in broad daylight in the middle of Coventry).
I have a query for you experienced runners. All the beginners' programmes recommend alternating walking with running whilst you build up stamina. I prefer doing a power-walk of about 10 mins to warm up, then running (well, shuffling) for 20 minutes, then doing a power-walk home. I'm gradually increasing the amount of time I spend running and feel I am doing OK as I am still injury free. If I run for 8 minutes then walk for 2, then try and repeat, I simply can't get going again and need to give up! Should I persevere with trying to do walk/run or should I just carry on training for my 5km race my way?

potty1 · 31/05/2005 22:07

Arabica - personally I've never managed the run-walk-run stuff. I find it easier (??) to just keep going at a jog rather than stop and walk. Even when I'm barely putting one foot in front of the other it's still a jog lol! If I go for a power-walk (which I usually do on my 'rest' days)then I just walk and don't jog at all

cod - 18 mins for 2 miles is a good pace. I'm struggling to do anything less than a 10 min mile.

Arabica · 31/05/2005 22:34

Relieved to hear that walk/run not the only option.
