Hi everyone, and congrats to those who did so well over the weekend. I was trying to post a new message on the runners thread, but couldn't because I think there were too many messages (over 800). I have a beginner's question. I ran (walked/ran) everyday for 1 week, then missed 1 week, and then went out this morning, and found that I could not run at all. My ankles are in severe pain when I run, but strangely do not hurt at all when I walk. So I ended up walking the whole way. I just bought new trainers - but I can't imagine that's the problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

mrspink27 - it does sound like your trainers are not giving your arch sufficient support. You're best going to a specialist running shop (ie not just an ordianry sports shop) and asking their advice - remember to take your current shoes along too to show them.

Hi folks
Just had a lovely child-free (& run free) w'end in london.. gonna get out tomorrow tho... watched end of a 10k in crouch end on sun and was quite moved by it, seeing the effort people put in (have never been a watcher before!)

gizmo, what a fab time for your race, hope you feel very proud. am doing a chunk of the edin marathon (4 miles) on june 12, not too worried about distance but really wanna run it well so as not to embarrass myself in front of my MUCH fitter teammates! have added it to list and ched off gizmo's performance!

A rather puff-pant 40 min run this a.m.... am sure this has been posted before but just wondered if anyone can recommend a good half marathon training prog which I could do over next 3 and a bit months? big thanks xx

Gizmo · 24/05/2005 11:34

Hello Fiona: what sort of time are you aiming for? Sub 2.00? Sub 1.50?

You could try this which is a Runners World schedule which assumes 4 runs per week. They also have 5 day/week schedules for a variety of time bands and I can send you one of those if you CAT me.

DS has gone down with chickenpox so has neatly derailed week 1 of my training . Still, at least it gives me a few more days to contemplate suitable events...

northerner · 24/05/2005 11:41

Hi guys, I just want to reiterate the importance of good shoes. Last week I went to a local specialist runing shop and spenf £75 on a new pair. More than I originally wanted to pay, but oh my god can I tell teh difference. The service was fab, and the guy ahd me running up and down the street to assess my running style, and apparantly I 'pronate' when running (as do 75% of females) so I need shoes to support this and I wouldn't have got it from a high street retailer.

Feels like I'm running on air now!

puddle · 24/05/2005 11:45

Hi everyone - haven't posted for a while but am still plodding away. Had a gap of almost a fortnight due to bad time at work and sick children. Trying to get bcak on track this week but am finding two weeks out has meant it's a lot harder again. have failed to get into the RFL here too, so I need to find another goal.

I do find you lot all v inspiring though - have been lurking even tho not posting (or managing more than a brisk walk....)

northerner · 24/05/2005 11:47

I've just signed up for a 10k in September....... EEk!

fionagib · 24/05/2005 12:22

Thanks very much gizmo & yes, will CAT you. Sub 2 hours would be great, but won't mind if am a bit slower.

Northerner you'll be fine, you have acres of time to train. Inspiring what you say about well fitting shoes, will investigate proper running shop in edin when I need a new pair...

sorry to hear about sick kiddies folks...

coldtea · 24/05/2005 12:25

fionagib-I usedthis when i trained for the great north run.

Am very excited, have just done my 1st link!!

Hth

coldtea · 24/05/2005 12:26

Whoops, way too slow for you!

Potty1 · 24/05/2005 12:29

I definitely need to find a 10k to do.

It's taken me 6 years to realise that I'm crap up to 30 minutes and much better for the next 30 - I say this as I've just committed to doing a 5k tonight . I'm off in search of one for the Autumn.......

fionagib · 24/05/2005 18:44

Good luck potty1, and thanks coldtea! seems a heck on a distance but it'll stop me funnelling too much wine down my throat over the summer

Arabica · 24/05/2005 20:34

I just got an email from the organisers of the 5km race I'm doing in Sept and I am the first person to register...so my race number is no. 1!!!

Potty1 · 25/05/2005 08:49

First to sign up - well done Arabica!!

Well, did my 5k fun run last night - it wasn't 5k, more like 6 and it wasn't fun. It was the most hellish, muddy, off road route they could find. At one point I was on my hands and knees up what seemed like a cliff-face and the down hill was just as tough. It ended up an almost vertical climb 50 (yes I counted them!) muddy wooden steps and across a field of knee high grass.

Feel like I've been run over by a truck this morning

fionagib · 25/05/2005 09:53

omg potty you poor thing!!! Brave woman, hope you managed to have long hot bath!

Am feeling bit twingy and achy in hips this am, wondering if, after a year (running on average 3-4 times per week) I should think about getting new shoes, what d'you think? How long do shoes last?

northerner · 25/05/2005 09:56

Well done Potty! Sounds pretty hellish to me

Think I'm suffering from shinsplints. Only went out for 40 mins last night, and was in agony when I got home. Sharp, prickly, knife like pains in my shins. Anyone any advice?

Prettybird · 25/05/2005 10:14

Northerner - that does sound like shin splints. Here is the advice the Gizom and I posted last Wednesday:

"Me: Northerner - Ouch Gizmo is right - no running for you at the momet. I had shin splints not long after I first started running (classic "too much too soon") and the only remedy was rest. I did go and see a phusio and had some ultrasound treatment, which may have helped.

Gizom: Sorry Northerner, but I don't think you should run .

You could try a cycle ride or swim, perhaps, to keep the cardiovascular busy? In the meantime, maybe Googling shin splints will come up with some suggestions on dealing with them: the standard advice is to check shoes and do some specific stretches, but you need to be sure that is your problem before you go through the whole hassle of new shoes. "

You've now got the new shoes, which should help stop you get the shin splinytts again - but really, you do need to stop for a wee while and then build up gain gradually. Hard I know, when you have just got yourself going - but best in the long run.

Fionagib: yes, you need new shoes. Normally shoes last about 3-400 miles - so think you are definitely due a 2service". Plus you are running more seriously now, so will may need a mre "serious" shoe

Potty1 - LOL at your "fun" run - but goes to show you are capable of more if you can survive that!

Prettybird · 25/05/2005 10:16

Sorry for typos! In particular, I can't type "Gizmo"!

northerner · 25/05/2005 10:18

Thanks PB. It's just so frustrating that I ahve to stop. I've totally got the bug and want to be out there doing it. Buggar.

Worried about my fitness levels dropping off. Not a gym member and I'm a really bad swimmer.

Arabica · 25/05/2005 10:25

Many sympathies, Northerner. I have always wanted to be a runner and having a back problem makes it so frustrating because there have been so many months when I have had to stop which of course puts me back at square one when I am OK to start again. I've never had shin splints but am wondering if a cross-trainer machine would be worth trying whilst you are on the mend? It's not running, but it will keep you active and fit whilst you are recovering.
Potty, that run sounds bonkers--what an achievement to complete it!

Prettybird · 25/05/2005 11:02

Northerner - I know it is frustrating.

Have you got a bike you could go out (picking up on Gizmo's suggestion). Alternatviely, if your shins are up to it, you could try some power walking. It might be that the "non-impact" nature of walking would be OK.

It's so long since I had shin splints I can't remember the fine detail of the advice. Gizmo may be able to advise yoy better.

What about your local council fintess centre? They're often not expensive for the odd session - which may be enough to keep you going.

Arabica · 25/05/2005 11:43

I second power-walking, am sure the reason I am injury free (so far) with the jogging is that I have also been training for a power-walk half-marathon...
