For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

Banana, peas, cauli, broccoli, carrots (but not many cause mil does them in white sauce which I think is just wrong) rhubarb, cucumber, tomatoes.

I want to start running but recently when I've walked quite far, I've been shattered and ached the next day (I say quite far, actually not very far! Only a couple of miles with double buggy/sling & pram) So I can't decide whether I need to exercise more so I don't get so knackered or if I'm overdoing it!! Think I need to get arse in gear and do exercise!!

FrayedKnot · 17/05/2009 21:42

Pink I couldn;t have exercised when DS was tiny, it took all my energy (so it seemed) to feed him. I started doing yoga / pilates again when he was about a year.

I think you should cut yourself some slack

Avi / SB yes the chickpea salad with mint and feta was my recipe (well my sister's actually) - I always think also it tastes nicer after it's been left for a few hours. Especially if you've put really sweet cherry toms in.

FrannyandZooey · 17/05/2009 22:21

no, he's only tiny pink
you give yourself as long as you need, honestly, that would be best for your body - it's still so soon after birth and your ligaments etc will still all be peculiar
how about swimming or yoga if you really want to do something?

FK gimme more details about the salad - what dressing? What other stuff?

Pink, you are overdoing it. I second yoga or swimming if you want to do something (and it gives you an hour or so without DC unless you foolishly decide to do a mum & baby yoga group which is completely pointless)

FrayedKnot · 17/05/2009 22:46

SB, chickpeas, fresh mint & feta = essential

cherry toms / cucumber / pepper / courgette = optional

Dressing - well I always use olive oil & balsamic vinegar on everything but I think you could experiment with the vinegar. Or maybe just lemon juice.

Now I must away to bed.

SuperBunny · 17/05/2009 23:16

Thanks FK

TooTicky · 18/05/2009 06:55

orange,

littlerach · 18/05/2009 15:47

Isn't it windy?

banana
grapes
tomatoes
raisisn

Tidying and cleaning must count for exercise. no?

Boco · 18/05/2009 17:07

It is windy.

What do you do when you have desperate sugar cravings in the saggy bit of the afternoon and you want a quick but evil haribo/ chocolate/ cake/ biscuits x 10 fix - and the fruitbowl has no appeal, or the things in it? I've eaten so much crap today out of general lethargy and tiredness and the need for sugar.

mollyroger · 18/05/2009 17:20

I try and have wholemeal toast with something, in the vague hope it is healthier than cake/chcolate etc...

Grapes
rasps
melon
strawbs
OJ
Sweetcor
mushrooms
leek
onion
garlic
lettuce
to mato
cucumber
peppers

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 18/05/2009 17:35

Blimey Molly

I've come to the conclusion that there is no real substitute for sweet stuff. You can hold off the craving for so long, but it will catch up with you eventually. So, I try and make my own cakes, that way I know what is in them and I can limit the shite stuff to a minimum.

A good (but wasteful) tip is to bake a cake but invite friends over so they help eat it up.

That's not much help really is it?

FrayedKnot · 18/05/2009 17:36

I eat the cake / biscuits, Boco.

But not Haribo

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 18/05/2009 17:39

I have thought of a helpful tip!

Really dark good quality chocolate. I'm not a fan of it, but if I have one square of it it can subdue the sugar craving.

FrayedKnot · 18/05/2009 17:41

And yes also try and make stuff so it's not quite so evil.

And avoid lemon yumyums at all cost.

ahundredtimes · 18/05/2009 18:13

Protein. I think you're supposed to eat protein. You need a cold chicken leg in the fridge or something like that. Nuts don't quite do it. Or you eat dried apricots, and then think about how much you hate dried apricots. Of course, it's normal to feel like this at 4-4.30 which is when it strikes me. It's tea time fgs! We should all be sitting down to crumpets and cake and cups of tea, and then having broth later. I frankly feel robbed by not having a proper afternoon tea.

dd won a cup at the chess thingy. We laughed hysterically and rather madly all the way home in the car because it had been a rather odd and long day and we were both amazed to be making off with the U7 silverware.

Boco · 18/05/2009 18:19

Wow well done dd - I didn't know she played chess too! Do you all sit down and play chess together? I can't imagine doing that with dd1, she won't sit down, or still, or listen to RULES.

Yes, afternoon tea is what I seem to need, I nearly fell asleep in dds piano lesson, my mind was doign that wandering off into dreamlike sequences thing you do before you drop off, and I had to go to the shop and buy rubbish to see me through.

littlerach · 18/05/2009 18:30

More protein at lunchitme I think.

Or drink gallons of coffee

as befor eplus
carrots
pepper
cherries
tomatoes
