For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

No we don't Boco I have no idea how to play. dd joined the chess club at school. ds1 likes chess and he plays with her sometimes, but that always ends up with someone screaming 'you moved my prawn'. That's all I know. I don't think she's all that good tbh, well other than being game for a bit of one to one combat over a chess board in a sports hall, it seems that not many other U7 girls fancy chess so was hers for taking.

FK, I made the chickpea salad and it was delicious - DS ate tons. We took it to the allotment and sat under the vines eating our picnic & several peopel walked past and said it looked very elegant

Boco, I also eat cake. If I try to be good and eat fruit or wholemeal bread or nuts and still need the cake afterwards so I may as well just eat the cake

Congrats to little ahundred

I always crave sugar/cakes by about three or four if I have carbs at lunchtime. If I am feeling disciplined I'll have some dried apricots but if not then a biscuit or tea with sugar. I feel better if I have fish and salad or something then carbs with dinner. I don't usually have both.

Apple
grapes
raspberries
tomatoes
orange juice
courgette
asparagus
strawberries
blueberries
Meringue

Guadalupe · 18/05/2009 19:27

I have been digging and mowing and chopping all day, I am knackered. The garden looks nice though. I forgot there was brick somewhere underneath the overgrown grass.

SuperBunny · 18/05/2009 19:27

Meringue isn't F&V, guad. Just so you know...

Boco · 18/05/2009 19:28

I don't understand the concept of a carb free lunch, I don't know what this means. And dried apricots are so unsatisfying.

lettuce
tomato
orange
green beans
spring greens
red pepper
carrot
onion
strawberries

Guadalupe · 18/05/2009 19:29

Well, there are these food groups called protein, carbohydrate, and so on. It means not eating the carbohydrate, like bread, pasta, potato.

I know, SB, but I really really deserve it after all my digging.

I lugged a 50lb bag of sand around this morning. I had a bit of a strop in the shop - the first bag had a huge hole in it which I only noticed when I went to pay at a self-service thingy. So, I carried it half-way across the store to the nearest 2 staff members and said, "This bag has a huge hole in it" and they just looked at me and finally said, "And?" So, I said, "Well, I want a bag that doesn't have a big hole in it and presumably you don't want me to put this one back on the shelf?" and they glared for a while then said,"Well, you can take it down to customer service" and I lost my patience and said, "Actually, I will NOT carry a 50lb bag of sand that I cannot even buy all the way down there" and I dumped it on the floor by their feet and they muttered. Then DS quietly said, That wasn't very good, was it Mummy?"

FrannyandZooey · 18/05/2009 19:49

LOL bunny! good for you

boco i think it is ok to eat some carbs at lunch, but not refined ones, and they are right about the protein

for mid afternoon slump how about milkshake with banana and cocoa (tastes chocolatey, doesn't need sugar)
or fruitcake, or malt loaf, or banana bread
or bowl of nice dried fruit with nuts which you mix up the night before so it's all ready for you? with a few chocolate buttons stirred in if you must

Did you fetch yourself a new one though, SB?

I do sometimes have carbs at lunch but it's usually ryvita or rice cakes. I know everyone thinks they taste like the piss of sawdust but I like them. Anyway bread gives me a stomach ache.

Boco · 18/05/2009 19:56

Well I understand what it means, but not how to do it. Lunch = bread, always and forevah.

FrannyandZooey · 18/05/2009 19:56

help me with rules veggers
ds1 and the fecking trampoline again
the latest is, he gets invited to go on it nearly every day, but not usually until around 5.30 or 6 pm, when we are usually eating
so he wolfs a bit of dinner and rushes out
when called in for bed is hungry, asks for food, wastes his wind down time with dp eating, or goes up to play with dp then ends up lying in bed after lights out shouting "i am hunnnnngryyyyyyyy"
fun all round

so today i was upstairs doing a nappy when he shouted up "i have finished and i'm going out"
i said "have you honestly eaten it, you'll be hungry later if not"
"yes"

well of course he had only eaten the veg and not the carbs (he should move in with you 100)

i was fuming as he had not told the truth
said he couldn't go out - and stuck to it even when he ate dinner and said he was sorry - at which point i usually relent i think - he was devastated

so what should we do? i am aware i'm always banging on about let them eat when they like, but i don't allow total pissing around with meals
any advice please

Hmm, milkshake and banana bread sounds nice. I should do wholesome baking. I am really very lazy though, that's the problem. Probably the refined carbs making me lazy.

Guadalupe · 18/05/2009 19:58

Bread = sugar

Guadalupe · 18/05/2009 19:59

You need to jack up the fish.

Guadalupe · 18/05/2009 20:00

Hmm, Franny, I would probably say eat food then go on the tramploine.

Boco · 18/05/2009 20:07

Jack up the fish? That sounds like jive talk, muthafucka.

Definitely have eat then play rule, or a time rule, no trampoline after a certain time.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 18/05/2009 20:08

I too would say food then trampoline. I know it sounds awful, but it was good that you stuck to your guns and that he was devestated. Oh blimey, that sounds dreadful, but I hope yswim!

Bunny, that sounds like what would happen here, not in the US of A.

Yes Boco, baking is the way to go. Muffins are very easy to make and you can make loads of different combinations.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 18/05/2009 20:11

For me too lunch = bread. It's a really hard habit to get out of.

I think 'I know I'll have soup instead', but of course you HAVE to have bread with soup.

'I know, I'll have a toasted sandwich' - doah!

'I know, I'll have chopped veg, humous and a toasted pitta' - double doah.

FrannyandZooey · 18/05/2009 20:16

i don;t tend to do withdrawal of privilege type punishments so i think he was shocked and possibly confused
i am happy for him to eat then go on, but this leads to me having to say "no you must eat MORE dinner" which again is not my style
plus unfortunately by the time he has really eaten a good dinner it is usually time to go up and wind down with dp - trampolining just before bed not greatest idea is it, as we learnt before?
next door's kids stay up till 9 often while ds is in bed at 7.15, so it's tricky

when i was dairy free i had lunches like cold veg sausages, hummus, salad, roasted veg, eggs, etc
i never saw the point of bread without butter
they were full of fat and protein but i lost weight
so chew on that
