For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

I'm with you Bunny, petits pois only [posh]. Frozen ones.

When I worked at the canning factory I used to have to attend taste panels, with cold mushy peas, marrowfat peas, so called garden peas. Ick.

Mitsu I will be thinking of you tomorrow. Is there any chance of dh moving out? I can't imagine how hard it must be

O lordy lord @ dead rat pong.

SuperBunny · 20/04/2009 18:21

I mean when I was 8 not recently. Obviously.

FrannyandZooey · 20/04/2009 18:36

just back from trampolining
first course i have signed up for since gymnastics debacle
ds has been asking to go for, well, years really but i didn't fancy it
so we got there and he wouldn't fricking get on the trampoline aaaaaaaargh
"i am scared" - hiding underneath the ruddy thing
all i could think of while trying to smile encouragingly was OH GOD FORTY SIX POUNDS DOWN THE TOILET

well eventually had the bright idea of me getting on with him
seeing as my balance is so rubbish that i fell off a child's rocking horse yesterday in the park, by spectacularly wobbling backwards off the seat, i felt this not happy prospect
not to mention pelvic floor
but 20 seconds of me going "oh help oh stop" and ds was able to continue in fine style and show how he was not scared like silly mummy
strewth a narrow escape

and ds2 was adored by all children in class and played with constantly
and got to have a go on the trampoline by himself with the teacher at the end
huzzah all round
the other children were so nice
and Evil Head of Gym came in while we were there and she couldn't chuck me out LOLOL because you HAVE to stay with them for trampolining you see

i said airily "oh hello X"
while lolling next to ds
and LOLing on the inside

Good news, franny

littlerach · 20/04/2009 19:09

Sounds good Fran

I booked dd2 in for swimming about a year ago, as she was so confodent and fun in the pool.
Ha. Got their and she screamed for ages. The (v young) teacher suggested I wait outside
WE didn't go back.
I try to forget the money

They are doing free swimming for under 16 here. But I presume not lessons.

Mitsubishi, wil think of you tomorrow.

I have my appt tomorro wmorning too

TT has been in his run all afternoon and it is covered in poo
I called in sick to work as am too anxious

Guadalupe · 20/04/2009 19:19

DD loves gymnastics. Dh is tryng to get me to take ds2 on a monday morning but it is miles away and dreary imo. I am sure he is happy with the park.

Right. DD's best friend has had her ears pierced. This has been received with much derision and judgement from other parents but is another thing, they think, in a long line of neglectful and annoying parenting issues. Endless lice, chldren beng allowed to the park on their own when they go there, one time bringing back a hyperdermic, dog in the playground etc.

Some of these I have issues with obviously. was furious when dd said she was scared in the park in the dark. I don't really have Issues with ear piercing though. Maybe it is a bit young, I was 9 or 10. But dd is begging me to let her and part of me feels rebellious and wants to let her.

But, it is a bit young isn't it, what do you think? And they have to wear plasters over the studs for pe and so on. Hmm.

littlerach · 20/04/2009 19:51

How old is dd?

Dd1 wanted hers done, as her friends have, and dh said ok, in the summer hols.
She changed her mind

I was only 5 or 6.
Then had another set done at 12 and a third at 14.

dds school try and get them to take them out for PE and swimming.

FrannyandZooey · 20/04/2009 20:18

i typed long reply then lost it
i had mine done same age so don#t find it shocking
but they are quite young - it does hurt, you have to keep them clean, it can get in the way of sports etc
would she go for another 'cool' type of adornment eg those hair things they glue in, which is non permanent?
i never wear earrings now and don't in fact like the holes there

FrannyandZooey · 20/04/2009 20:21

questions about food ideas please

was bathing ds1 today and god he looks thin
do they all look like this age 6? all spine and eyes
anyway what can i give him that is healthy but has plenty of calories in? he isn't fond of avocado
i don't partic like him having lots of sweet stuff or sat fats either
he does love cheese and butter but i am on the stingy side - just because is animal fat
he does have yogurts and bananas and nuts
anything else?

Evening all.

Had another crap day today.
Started crying at 8am becasue of dh going back to work today (FFS) and not sleeping well. Attempted cold turkey potty training with ds which was a nightmare. FIL phoned at 9am to tell me SIL's Dad died this morning, then I have the cheek to burst into tears again!
Felt like a right doolie, I can tell you.

I am now hiding up here because dh's friend is visiting and I can't be arsed. I am so knackered. I want my comfy chair, tea, mumsnet adn telly.

I am pre menstrual which I guess is not helping.

ANyway, I hav no idea what I ate today but will have a massive fruit salad shortly to combat boredom adn tiredness.

Good luck tomorrow Mits adn LR. Jeezo, I feel like such a tool moaning when others have more serious worries. Sorry.

nickytwotimes · 20/04/2009 20:30

Pmsl at 6 yr olds being all spine and eyes! SPot on!

Um, high colorie stuff? Nut butters maybe?

littlerach · 20/04/2009 20:33

PMT is the owrst.

TigerFeet · 20/04/2009 20:35

Goodness there's a lot going on tomorrow isn't there? THinking of you Rach.

How old is dd Guad? WOuld she wait until the beginning fo the summer holidays so that they'd be healed up in time to take out for PE etc in September?

Has ds1 had a growth spurt Franny? DD has suddenly sprouted and is all legs and ribs. She seems to either be a bit pudgy or super skinny and nothing in between. You could try things like houmous and mayonnaise which have a reasonable amount of fat in, but it's usually rapeseed oil rather than animal fats. I'd use them liberally in sandwiches or dips with pitta bread.

TigerFeet · 20/04/2009 20:38

Oh poor you nicky2x, I empathise, I'm awful for bursting into tears when I have PMT. I decided to get up the duff so I don't have to worry about it for a while and now I just cry all the time

FrayedKnot · 20/04/2009 20:41

LR will be thinking of you tomorrow. Hope you manage to get some sleep tonight.

TF, will be thinking of you and DD too. I hope it goes well.

Franny what about nut butters? Does he like them?

Guad I would say no, but that's possibly just me and my victorian standards . I would also say no on principle just because best friend is allowed. I am probably really mean though.

Nicky2, hope you have a better day tomorrow. And leave the potty training for a few days

FrayedKnot · 20/04/2009 20:44

I am in slow post mode

Nigella was distracting me with her k-beater. Tart.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 20/04/2009 20:58

Good luck for those who need some positive vibes tomorrow. I'll be thinking of you all.

I hope tomorrow is a better day for you Micky. So days things just get on top of you don't they?

blueberries
banana x2
dried fruit
oj
carrots
cauliflower
humous
salad leaves
avocado, cucumber, tomatoes, coleslaw (probably 2 portions)
mushrooms, onion, tomatoes (1 portion)

Shame I sat on my fat arse all day otherwise I'd get a 10/10 sticker

Franny - most children that age are skin and bone. How about more carbs if you feel he needs more fuel?

pinkspottywellies · 20/04/2009 21:04

Franny @ lolling and loling!

Guad I wasn't allowed mine pierced til I was 16, after I'd finished my last GCSEs. To quote my mum 'earrings don't go with school uniform' and they're dangerous in PE. I went to get them done the minute I finished my last exam. My sister had the same rule but didn't do hers til she was in her late 20's.

Mits and LR, thinking of you tomorrow.

Who's planning to out on the evening of the meet up? I'm trying to decide about hotels and transport.

Raisins, apple juice, tomato soup, cabbage (with vinegar - anyone else do this?), carrots, carrots/onion/courgette in meatloaf. I've never had meatloaf and I know this thread is a bit veggie inclined but

pinkspottywellies · 20/04/2009 21:05

Oh and good luck for dd tomorrow Tiger.

FrayedKnot · 20/04/2009 21:50

Now here's a diary

You can start it whenever you want!

Pink I will not be staying although I would love to.

pinkspottywellies · 20/04/2009 22:07

That's quite some diary FK!

Has everyone read the socially mortifying children thread? It's brilliant!

Tatties · 20/04/2009 22:29

Hello veggers

I am also doling out hugs and positive vibes to those who need them

Made lovely dinner tonight - veg & bean stew, with tomatoes, carrot, potato, cauliflower, spring onions and cannellini beans. Yum.

Franny at the lolling and LOLing!

Guad - ooh I don't know. I would want to say no, but I would be concerned about going about it the right way (I mean I wouldn't want to make it more desirable just because I was against it, iyswim.) I had my ears pierced at 4 or 5 - it wasn't a big deal at all, I wanted them done, my mum let me. I wear earrings only very occasionally now, and like Franny would rather not have the holes there. I don't think it is a terrible thing to do, but the issue for me is having something irreversible done at an age where you aren't really considering whether you will still like it in 20 years' time. I am probably blowing this way out of proportion but it is something I have thought about quite a bit

FrannyandZooey · 20/04/2009 22:30

oh at diary
you will all be finding me beautiful ones now i have bought a dull one

pink i am unconvinced about evening tbh
settling my lot down in a hotel room takes some doing now, i am not sure i am going to try to go out as well, seems over ambitious really
i would think your ds would be a good age to just come along and doze though
mine tends to stay awake and get a bit fraught after an hour or so of social excitement

thanks for food ideas - nut butters and carbs - will do
problem is given the chance he would live off fruit veg and cake
hmm actually so would i

right well good luck chaps for tomorrow
i really do hope everyone hears good things and that we can have a bit of a party on here tomorrow night
either way the veggers are thinking about you

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 20/04/2009 22:34

OP posts:
Guadalupe · 20/04/2009 22:37

Thanks everyone. She's seven. Thing is I really don't mind the idea of her having her ears pierced, but I sort of feel like I should if that makes sense. I can't see much difference in her having it at seven, nine or eleven really, but I know people will disapprove. And that makes me want to let her, but I don't want to let her purely because it amuses me that people will tut! Oh, I don't know, will think some more.

Franny - dd is constantly hungry atm. She eats lots of fruit, toast, crumpets, cake, peanut butter, jam, in fact probably too much sugar. And seaweed. She is a nori fiend.
