For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

how is dairy free going btw pointy?

OP posts:
Guadalupe · 17/04/2009 23:00

mushrooms
broccoli
chickpea salad - am addicted to these
tomatoes
orange
tropical juice

Guadalupe · 17/04/2009 23:01

There, now pointy can't answer.

pointydog · 17/04/2009 23:03

oh, after a whole dairy-free day I truly am exhausted.

I took the dds to the local small tesco this evening to look for good biscuits. mnetters have been fab - dd2 was delighetd to hear that party rings are dairy free. Her weekend treat is now fry's chocolate creams which she loves.

she does not like to talk about the rice milk and 'spread' much. We have agreed to call them milk and butter.

Jamie Oliver's korma with coconut milk went down surprisingly well. I haven't broken it to her yet that we can't really have the broccoli and pesto pasta.

We have looked through the school dinner menu and we have sorted it all out.

It is A Huge Drag but occasioanlly fun. dh just keeps saying 'are we having ghee again?'. He doesn't know what ghee is, you see, so he thinks it's funny.

pointydog · 17/04/2009 23:04

I took so long to bore you with dairy-free tales that I missed that post.

pointydog · 17/04/2009 23:05

I am the last person who would consider cutting out a foodstuff

Guadalupe · 17/04/2009 23:07

I am surprised I must say. I got the impression you had tried all this and were cynical about food exclusion.

Coconut milk is really good in a chowder too, in fact I prefer it now. I never got on with spreads really. Mostly had peanut butter on toast/crackers.

pointydog · 17/04/2009 23:12

I excluded dairy for quite a few weeks when dd2 was a baby, bought goat's milk formula. Didn't make a difference. And there is scanty evidence for doing something as big as omitting an important food group. And it is genetrally considered that there are so many triggers for eczema/asthma etc that you';re pretty much on a hidingn to nothing trying to eliminate just one and expecting it to work.

dd2 is much older now. And the herbalist that I visited in a rash moment made me feel so guilt-ridden that I thought 'fuck it, we'll do it then and if we're going to do it we'll damn well do it properly'.

Then at least I can say We Have Done That.

pointydog · 17/04/2009 23:13

I am cynical about just about everything to do with atopic allergies

Guadalupe · 17/04/2009 23:32

We were 'lucky' in the sense that dairy was the obvious culprit for ds as symptoms stopped when we cut it out every time. I tried wheat but that didn't make much difference. I can't imagine trying endless things, that must be very wearing.

Right, I must go to bed, I have got skull fuzz.

pointydog · 17/04/2009 23:36

what does/did ds have, g?

SuperBunny · 18/04/2009 01:52

Pointy, I will be very interested to see how DS responds to dairy-free. My DS's legs are so bad, I really need to do something. We don't eat much dairy but cutting out that last little bit seems so hard. And he is a cheese fiend.

SuperBunny · 18/04/2009 01:55

Grapes

FrannyandZooey · 18/04/2009 07:38

dairy isn#t particularly an important food group imo
it is a pain i admit, but nutritionally you are usually better off without it, as long as your diet is good

i think the links are definitely there and it is worth trying, unless some particular reason why not
hopefully it will quickly make a difference pointy and then dd might feel more positive about it? or if it makes no odds she can go back to a wider diet

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 18/04/2009 07:39

oh and pointy you can get vegan pesto - will link
it isn't as nice (imo) as the usual, but that's often the way with substitutes isn't it

FrannyandZooey · 18/04/2009 07:41

FrannyandZooey · 18/04/2009 07:42

anyway good morning
god i am clogging up the thread
been up since 5.30 am thanks to ds1
the little bugger darling

OP posts:
Guadalupe · 18/04/2009 08:26

5.30 - wow that is early. Hope you get a sleep later.

Pointy - do you mean what were his symptoms or what did he have as a replacement? He had asthma, sounded like an old man wheezing and coughing and excess mucous. His nose and eyes constantly streamed clear fluid and people were always saying, aah, he's crying. Whenever we stopped dairy it would stop within two weeks. I hope you have some success with your trial.

Right - I am off to the bakers. Boco is in town today and we having rolls in the park and then going to a museum. They have an amazing old toy section but the dolls are a bit freaky, weird old cracked faces and wide stark eyes. Wouldn't want to be in there at night.

littlerach · 18/04/2009 08:35

Rolls in the park?
To eat or phsically rolling?

FK, the hospital receptionist said it, then I xalled my GP secretary and she called the hospital and had mor ein depth chat and then said the same. If the consultant finds anything sinister he will send me for a scan immediately.

Guadalupe · 18/04/2009 08:42

Well, I was thinking ciabatta with boursin and tomato but if Boco wants to practise her forward rolls round the park then she's very welcome. I'll hold the crisps.

mollyroger · 18/04/2009 10:03

you're all blardy doing this on purpose. I spent 2 days lurking round house, idly refreshig MN and you all buggered off. Yesterday I spent a day at farm place and you all rack up a million posts.
I will comment randomly.
Hello Pointy, dairyfree sounds knackering
Guada - get you, Mx Farrow and Ball. And hurrah for juicy ovaries. I think...

Horsey snorting and silent boaking sound, rrm, diverting..

Franny's got a filofax, franny is a yuppie etc etc

Right.
Off to Nothumbria for a christening. Be good y'all.

Yesterday, melon, banana, grapes, strawberries, lettuce, spinach, cucumber, oilves, onions, tomatoes.

Guadalupe · 18/04/2009 10:39

Lol at Franny is a yuppie. I haven't heard that word in a while.

We are colour matching with Dulux, Molly, but that is the colour we are matching.

Sorry for rank image. I couldn't eat my orange last night either. I bit a segment and thought, my, this is a juicy orange and immediately felt sick and gave it to dh.

Pineappple
strawberries

and mmm, they were nice. I froze when she said my card was rejected thinking my money hadn't gone in and I was stuck with mingey apples and no rolls but it was ok, had used the wrong one.

Guadalupe · 18/04/2009 10:39

mangey even

Tatties · 18/04/2009 11:25

Hello people! I am glad there has been some good news - Guad, TF, Boco

I have a filofax

I have just looked into trains for meet up but they are looking v. expensive already - things a bit tight here really so I think it's doubtful we'll be able to come. Dp said I should go on my own but I'm still not sure about leaving ds

ahundredtimes · 18/04/2009 11:35

I like filofaxes, I haven't got over the 80s. I haven't got one, I used to but I look at them a lot.

Yes good health news, at last, well done all.

Have eaten
