Oh I feel for you. Had the same thing a couple of weeks ago. Have you tried gargling with aspirin?

Get some hydrogen peroxide solution and gargle with it (solution as in diluted Hydrogen Peroxide - just in case!) - it will oxidise the germs and you will be better in no time.

In the meantime warm brandy, 2 paracetamol + 2 nurofen should numb the pain!

From DrMadameC (I am not a doctor by the way just lived with throat problems for 20 yrs until wanky NHS decided that I was ill enough to have tonsils out, which was v ill considering I am allergic to all the throaty antibiotics!)

Mercy · 01/03/2009 18:25

Yes, dispersible aspirin, paracetemol or even salt water can help.

Poor you

Any other symptoms?

Guadalupe · 01/03/2009 18:25

Gargling wth cider vinegar and a bit of salt is meant to help. Not everyone can stomach it though.

If not then then strepsils are quite good.

southeastastra · 01/03/2009 18:33

only have salt so have gargled with that. though i'm sure i have hydrogen peroxide somewhere. will look ta.

hot and cold and achey all over.

haven't had sore throat for ages

MadameCastafiore · 01/03/2009 18:34

Do your ears hurt?

Does it hurt to swallow?

southeastastra · 01/03/2009 18:36

Nolda · 01/03/2009 18:36

Ice lollies are great for sore throats and yummy .

smellyeli · 01/03/2009 18:36

Oooo, sympathy from me - I have tonsillitis. Gargling with soluble aspirin helps, difflam mouth spray. Very regular paracetamol and brufen. If no better and pus on tonsils (get someone to have a look with a torch) get thee to a GP for some antibiotics

MadameCastafiore · 01/03/2009 18:40

You don't need antibiotics - seriously Hydrogen Peroxide will knock it in the head faster than anitbiotics!

Tastes like shit (seriously it does) just after you spit out the solution as your tonsils are fizzing as the bacteris dies and gives of this manky foam stuff - but it is wonderful stuff.

Can also be used for any infection - ingrowing toenail - infected splinter - anything really.

sickofsocalledexperts · 01/03/2009 18:42

I had this and really sympathise. The only things that helped were a) go to GP and get antibiotic and b) DIFFLAM sore throat mouthwash - beautiful stuff and available over the counter without prescription!!I keep it in the cupboard now as it's so good

southeastastra · 01/03/2009 18:43

oh thanks madamecastafiore will get some if i can't find any here.

i've read hp is quite good for lots of stuff. think i may have a rocket lolly or two also .

OP posts:
Mercy · 01/03/2009 18:44

I'd forgotten about HP, it really does help.

Failing that a bottle of whisky might do the trick!

Guadalupe · 01/03/2009 18:45

I've heard of hydrogen peroxide being gargled for colds before. Doesn't it burn?

southeastastra · 01/03/2009 18:45

ooh whiskey would be lovely! only have some ice cold white wine.

Sawyer64 · 01/03/2009 18:59

I was prescribed some Throat-numbing Spray after I had my Tonsils out in 2002.

Brilliant stuff, think it was called Chloraseptic by Vicks.I always use it now when I have a sore throat.

Not much use to you tonight i know, but maybe for tomorrow.

Sounds like it may be Tonsillitis, you may need to see a doc for Antibiotics.

booge · 01/03/2009 19:00

If it's bacterial tonsillitis you may need antibiotics worth getting checked at the drs

if its the laryngitis bug I had (that then turned into croup and got then secondary infections and made me horrendously poorly) then gargles won't reach it. Apart from alternating nurofen and paracetemol with codeine (which did nothing) the only thing that seemed to help was sucking on ice pops.
Hope you feel better soon.

southeastastra · 01/03/2009 20:09

hope it's not that kitten. feel worse and worse all shivery want my bed

OP posts:
Suedonim · 01/03/2009 20:11

If it feels like you're swallowing shards of glass, you may have a strep throat infection and you'll need antibiotics. I've had strep throat a few times and it makes you feel so ill. I could barely talk or move my feverish aching body the last time I had it.

southeastastra · 01/03/2009 20:17

i'll make an appointment in the morning. i can't live with this if there are anti-biotics that will help. it's really swollen in one place, came on so quickly

OP posts:
southeastastra · 01/03/2009 20:18

oh and thanks all for listening to me moan .

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/03/2009 20:19

you need to go to bed then and really rest. Can you get someone to sort out school runs/contacting work or what ever is needed for the morning so that if you are really coming down with something you won't have to worry?

take care of yourself.
