well what can i say, dd 14 mth ,has been limping for 3 weeks, holding her foot funny, been to a&e 3times, my gp, been told 4 different reasons, anyway she was kept in from fri night and is still in,she is back on a drip having antibiotics, had 2 lots of xrays and is having a one scan tomorrow, they think it is a bone infection, she wont put her heal down, and it is swollen, hard, red and hot.she was in hospital around 3 weeks ago with gastroenteritis, and i am pretty sure all this has been caused by the drip she had then (bad hygiene in hospital) but i am also going to demand a mrsa test, as symptoms are VERY similar.

all in all i am disgusted with the whole experience, lack of hygiene, lack of care and help given, they are eing very cagey about actual diagnosis, but i am going to get to the bottom of it all

wish me luck, , anyone else have any similar experiences?

lilsmum, only just read this thread. I am so and and for you and your little one. She sounds like such a trooper, bless her. Sorry I can't help but wanted to give you and dd a big hug. Hope all goes well.

Potty1 · 26/04/2005 19:45

lilsmum - ask for a copy of her medical notes and test results. Data Protection Act says that you are entitled to have them. Put it in writing to the medical records department at the hospital and they supposed to send them witinh forty days (usually a small copying fee).

Your poor dd - were they rough putting in the line in her foot? She could have broken one of her small bones couldn't she. How is her rash now?

happenedtous · 26/04/2005 20:28

Hi Lilsmum - I'm so sorry this hasn't been sorted out yet. I'd thought I'd post again since your consultant has mentioned arthritis again. It's my understanding that it can be diagnosed by a blood test. Did they test for this when blood was taken? My dd was diagnosed by a rheumatologist rather then a paediatric consultant.Anyhow,I hope things improve soon, xxx.

Newbarnsleygirl · 26/04/2005 21:01

Is this hospital on this planet?

I can't imagine how cross you must be LM.

Sending big hugs to you all {{{{}}}}

sorry not checked back since i posted earlier,

noddyholder... she was on flucloxacillin (IV for 6 days then oral for 6 days, did nothing really which leads me to believe even more it isnt a infection and that it is a fracture )she ended up with severe thrush and a skin infection by taking antibiotics that didnt help the foot...great!! just what she needed

could really do with asking COUNTESS D to pick her dh's brain about this, could someone point her in this direction if they could? please need to find out if this is worth persuing (sp?)

thanks again for all the messages of support

MarsLady · 26/04/2005 23:39

pull your head out of your bum you nutter. Do I have to come all the way up there and sort it out for you?

I'm fine thanks hun! I've been having a little batty fun.

lilsmum · 26/04/2005 23:47

oh poo, keep reading back at the messages and finding questions i havent answered lol

potty1.. they were very rough putting the drip in, i really do think it must be a fracture now, and everything you read about toddler fractures on the internet mentions child abuse i.e the doctor putting the line in must have caused trauma. when dd was able to weight bear on the foot although still limping (3-4weeks ago) there seemed to be a bone sticking out the back of her heel, and her ankle bone wasnt in the usual place but preston hospital didnt see as when they saw her she wouldnt weight bear on the foot just chorley hospital but should be in her notes, and i have mentioned this to her consultant many times!

i aint a doctor but everything points to being a fracture not infection...i.e no fever, no sickness, no illness at all except the limp and painful heel, also bloods havent shown a infection neither did the bone scan or ultrasound, also the antibiotics did nothing to help..so what does that spell out? FRACTURE! toddlers x-rays are very difficult to get a fracture to show up, could take 2-3 weeks only when the bone starts to repair can you see a break on a x-ray...so what the hell are they doing?

sorry for the rant lol

lilsmum · 26/04/2005 23:49

oh mars, i feel like i am going insane with all this...come here and kick these doctors up the bum will ya lol

Aero · 26/04/2005 23:54

Have just caught up with this now - v on your and your dd's behalf!
Has she actually been x-rayed at all to check for a fracture? (sorry if I've missed that if she has - is late and need to go to bed, but will check this tomorrow).
So sorry that you're having to go through all this frustration though and watching your dd suffer. It makes you feel so helpless when you're not getting anywhere with the people who are supposed to know what they're doing and helping her to recover!!! Just awful. I hope things improve for you all soon.

lilsmum · 26/04/2005 23:58

thanks aero, they have done 2 lots of x-rays but from what i can find out of the WWW lol, a fracture in a baby/toddler...even if they manage to get the right angle of x-ray still very very hard to see, which is why they should repeat x-rays every 10 days to look for changes in the bone, they last did one 2 weeks ago, and mentioned this today with no avail...they leaving the cast on for 2 weeks so that will be 4 weeks in between x-rays my concern is that the fractue will heal by itself and she will heal "wrong"

OP posts:
Aero · 27/04/2005 00:14

Wee pet - I'm sure she will heal right if it is a fracture. (Expect at least some of the medical staff know what they're doing even if the others don't.
Hope you get some sleep tonight.
Will check tomorrow.

BadgerBadger · 27/04/2005 00:18

Hi Lilsmum .

Wow! So rare for me to be gobsmacked, but I am having read your recent posts.

If Lilly was admitted to hospital without an injury to her ankle but was discharged with and injury to her ankle, received whilst under their care (fracture or otherwise), there are no two ways (IMO) this has to be addressed.

Not entirely sure on how I'd go about this, have you spoken to your local primary care trust? I'd put a complaint (written) to them immediately, demand that LO is placed under the care of another medical team (in fact, preferably another hospital), one which is completely uninvolved in how the injury happened, so will pull out the stops to heal her.

All the above in case it is an injury possibly caused by them. If not, surely she will receive better care elsewhere anyway, given all that has happened so far.

So, so and for you and Lilly. How is she?

xx

lilsmum · 27/04/2005 00:23

oh badgerbadger i am so close to just breaking down in to mush atm

lilly is great, takes everything in her stride, such a happy little soul always laughing and smiling who is never down with anything thrown at her...thats what makes it worse.

i am starting to get paranoid now, about the whole thing, PALS will have a record of my complaints made to them, primary care i think is a no go tbh, and there are no hospitals near with a childrens ward/pediatric team i just dont know what to do next, is it just me ? or does all this sound suspicious to you?

OP posts:
lilsmum · 27/04/2005 00:25

is there a way i could save this thread? as it has dates etc on it

OP posts:
BadgerBadger · 27/04/2005 00:27

Can you print it out Lilsmum?

lilsmum · 27/04/2005 00:28

lol, duh god cant you tell i am harrassed, cant believe i never thought that

OP posts:
BadgerBadger · 27/04/2005 00:34

Bless her, she sounds like a lovely little girl

TBH, what you have described just doesn't seem right. Not just the recent mention of a possible fracture which she may have sustained in hospital, but throughout all of this, it doesn't seem that they have done their utmost to help either Lilly or you.

Their evasiveness when you have questioned them is bound to have made you suspicious, naturally. But, I think getting hold of her medical notes may help to provide you with some explanations?

Why is your local PCT a no go, out of interest?

BadgerBadger · 27/04/2005 00:38

Have you been to this site?

lilsmum · 27/04/2005 00:39

badgerbadger..there is loads that has happened that i havent mentioned on here, too much

PCT..i just feel they will all stick together, they have so far, seems like they are all scared of diagnosing as it points to them

thanks for listening to me moan x

lilsmum · 27/04/2005 00:40

yeh had a look on there last night, i could do with getting hold of the patients charter for children but cant find anything on the net

OP posts:
BadgerBadger · 27/04/2005 00:42

Sorry, the hospital you mentioned is under a foundation trust. Pct is for GP's/opticians and such like (doh! it's late - that's my excuse! ) though, they do have a member on the board of the foundation trust that oversees that hospital.....
