well what can i say, dd 14 mth ,has been limping for 3 weeks, holding her foot funny, been to a&e 3times, my gp, been told 4 different reasons, anyway she was kept in from fri night and is still in,she is back on a drip having antibiotics, had 2 lots of xrays and is having a one scan tomorrow, they think it is a bone infection, she wont put her heal down, and it is swollen, hard, red and hot.she was in hospital around 3 weeks ago with gastroenteritis, and i am pretty sure all this has been caused by the drip she had then (bad hygiene in hospital) but i am also going to demand a mrsa test, as symptoms are VERY similar.

all in all i am disgusted with the whole experience, lack of hygiene, lack of care and help given, they are eing very cagey about actual diagnosis, but i am going to get to the bottom of it all

wish me luck, , anyone else have any similar experiences?

lilsmum, you keep moaning girl - you bloody well deserve it, having to put up with all this!

Seriously, keep us posted on you dd, what a little trouper she must be .

BadgerBadger · 22/04/2005 01:28

Hi,

I was 'gutted' to read you and Lilly had another awful day.

Maybe look into getting acidophilus if you get a chance, honestly, it would do wonders for encouraging her 'friendly bacteria', which would help her skin and thrush.

Good luck for tomorrow, I hope at last they give Lilly the care and you the respect you both deserve.

xx

Tiggiwinkle · 22/04/2005 10:04

Good luck with the scan this morining Lilsmum. Hope you get something sorted for your poor DD-how is she today?

lilsmum · 22/04/2005 21:41

had the ultrasound scan this morning, dd was NOT impressed at the guy pressing on her heel with the ultrasound!! he said from wthe glimpse he got to see there didnt seem to be anything that would cause concern so we are back to square 1 AGAIN!

gotta go to see the consultant on tues still..and they have put a cast on her foot/leg, she was not impressed at having that done either or at trying to get around with it on,so i guess that is it now till tues (sigh)

MarsLady · 22/04/2005 21:49

do you need me to come and kick someone honey. Cause you just point me in the right direction How can they let a little girl suffer so long? Ooh, I could kick someone I really could!

lilsmum · 22/04/2005 22:03

yes mars....i need a side kick to butt kick!!! lol,

i am just weary of it all now, its just ridiculous...the amount of times i have cried over the past few weeks because of sheer frustration is unreal!feel like i am losing the plot,i am soo angry and i am a really chilled person normally, cant remember now what it was like to see lilly running around and feel like all this is never going to end

xx

OP posts:
MarsLady · 22/04/2005 22:04

It will end honey. You tell that consultant that you're not leaving until he tells you exactly what the problem is and how it can be solved. If that doesn't work, give me his phone number. It'll work!!!!!!!!!

lilsmum · 22/04/2005 22:05

badgerbadger...thanks for the sweet messages

i am going to look into getting some of that acidopholus, can you get it from most health food shops?

OP posts:
lilsmum · 22/04/2005 22:09

mars the thing is.. this consultant may be good at his "job" (yeah right) but he hardly bloody speaks!!, its all one word answers, its like trying to get blood outta a stone which just adds to the frustration.

also EVERYONE i.e family, friends even the bloody plaster man today are trying to diagnose her, its a absolute joke!! i mean how hard can it be for a "senior" consultant to tell me what it is and how it can be treated?!?

OP posts:
lilsmum · 22/04/2005 22:11

lol oh and just to finish off my rant (sorry) everywhere you look in hospitals there are posters saying "we do not tolerate agression" its them that make you aggressive!!

Hi Lilsmum,

re: acidophilus.
Acidophilus is part of a wider range of probiotics.
For children, ABCdophilus is the one to get (acidophilus itself isn't in this one as it's not recommended for children, though is part of the adult version of the same, sorry for writing the wrong one earlier.)

ABCdophilus contains 3 strains of friendly bacteria: B.bifidum, B.infantis, S.thermophilus (each normally found in the human digestive system. Large quantities of antibiotics can get rid of them.
Also, 'Naturalife Echinacea for kids' is good to help balance a child's immune system.

I've double checked these with my sister - my niece had to undergo a long course of high dosage antibiotics at a very young age. My sister feels sure using them helped to discourage other side effects.

They should each be available in either good health food shops or holland and barrett. I usually find it best to ring around first to check.

How is Lilly now? I'm shocked yet again at the lack of care she is receiving at the hospital. It's so frustrating that the consultant wont give any reassurance or information to you, that at least might allay your concerns a bit.

Would asking for a second opinion from another consultant delay her treatment further? Would their patient liason service be able to advise you on this?

One thing I have found to be helpful when I don't seem to be getting anywhere with a GP for example, is to ring the local PCT (primary care trust). They have an in house liason service and tend to be a bit more on the ball about sorting problems out. Might be worth a try?

(If that doesn't work, I'll happily join Marslady in kicking the useless ~~~~~~'s! )

Take care,
xx

Potty1 · 23/04/2005 09:36

lilsmum - sorry that you are still being given the runaround. It's just not on.

Write down your questions for the consultant next week, if he can't answer them and hasn't a clear idea of what to do next then ask to be referred to someone who does (is this bloke a general paed or does he have a speciality?). Also ask for a copy of the clinic letter (that's the letter that they send to your GP after an appointment - sometimes they put stuff in there that they don't mention to you. Hope it goes OK and little Lily is soon back racing around.

lilsmum · 25/04/2005 16:41

badgerbadger... i called to holland and barratt today for some of that stuff you said about..they only had it in tablet form but said that the activia yogurts would do the job just the same so bought some of them for her

thanks for the advice

I really don't know what to say... everytime we feel that DS would be better seeing a specialist we have decided to stop waiting by going private, but it seems that you have received so many contradictory diagnoses and advice that it is difficult to think that just by seeing another doctor the problem will be solved.

I have noticed that doctors are more willing to speak openly if they don't feel threatenned, the sole mention of another doctor's diagnose shuts them up. So, I can only suggest to make an appointment with another GP, even in the same surgery, explain to the new doctor how you feel but try to be as nice as you can, weep a little if it's needed (sounds horrible I know bbut IT WORKS), tell them that it makes you feel awful not knowing what is going on with your child, that she is not fine otherwise she will be moving her leg without problem, but that you really need that somebody explain to you the diagnose process that has been followed and what steps are going to be taken next if the current treatment fails.

lilsmum · 26/04/2005 18:09

well seen the consultant this morn (well afternoon had to wait 3 hrs to see him )anyway i got my point across i think...

she having a cast on for 2 weeks, then more x-rays then if nothing shows on them, she will have a MRI scan(which she will have a general to be put out)

he said its possible its a fracture but he thinks it would have healed by now!? 4 weeks?? and walking on it!! i dont think it wold have healed.

also mentioned again about arthiritis (sure they only say this when they havent got a clue what it is)

so she had to have the pink cast cut off, and now has a purple one lol(doesnt show as much dirt because she is still trekking around with it on)

what she ill before the foot with other symptoms or was this the 1st thing?Sounds like the hospital are a nightmare Hope she gets well soon and they find out what it is Young children can have arthritic conditions and the treatment is v sucessful I have a friend whose son was diagnosed with RA at 2 and he has been treated v successfully

lilsmum · 26/04/2005 18:24

noddyholder... she came out of the hospital limping thats when it started (she was in for 5 days with gatroenteritis, they poked around with the drip on the foot in question) thats where i think it originated from tbh, not that they will admit it they were VERY rough with it, and i 1st thought it was dislocated, now i truely believe its a fracture caused by them.

do you know what the 1st problem were with your friends LO? how it started etc

am really sorry to hear of all these hassles - how nightmarish for all of you.Hope she starts to improve soon. Whereabouts is the hospital? is it a big city hospital or smaller one?

noddyholder · 26/04/2005 18:29

His didn't start with an infection he had swollen painful joints and high fevers .When I was on dialysis I had a tube in my neck for access one day a male nurse dropped the cap and put it straight on instead of a new one 4 days later I was really ill and covered in small bruises that looked like a rash The doctor said I must have changed washing powder I demanded to see blood results and it was mrsa!definitely from the dirty cap It took ages to recover Have you been told what her results have shown They won't tell you unless pushed

lilsmum · 26/04/2005 18:29

its the royal preston hospital, a big hospital they transfer from blackpool and chorley to here as they have no pediatrics avoid this hospital like the plague!!

OP posts:
lilsmum · 26/04/2005 18:33

noddyholder... i have asked sooo many times, i was told the blood results were "nearly normal"?!? what the hell is that supposed to mean? it either they normal or they not. i questioned about mrsa they said if it was that her drip "hole" wouldnt have healed up, i just feel like i am banging my head against a brick wall...dd is 15mth today and should and would have been running around now if it wasnt for all this...which i am CERTAIN is their fault, but how can i prove it? there was me, dd, dp, a nurse and a dosctor in the room that night they tried to canulate(drip) her, and they were really rough as dd was obviously upset the doctor had already tried once, in the crook of her arm and was very distressed.

OP posts:
lilsmum · 26/04/2005 18:34

do you think it would be worth seeking legal advice?
