It Ain't Nece-celery So - 10 / 10 thread - with new ADDED FOCUS

For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

Sounds very dramatic!

littlerach · 11/02/2009 20:03

TooT, dd1 is rather run down. She has a huge ulcer.

I have been giving her dried apricots for lunch every day.
And broccoli for dinner, with anything!
And also chicken.

Think will call GP tomorrow and see what we can do.
Would they do like an assesment?
She was seen by a HV when she was almost 3, had a lot of SALT. But do you see a HV when they are 8??

FrannyandZooey · 11/02/2009 20:04

oh i did have dried apricots! 12 then

ds2 had them also - i blanched in boiling water for couple of mninutes to soften (blw friend's idea)
he adored them and made the most adorable noisy enthusiastic slurping sounds

littlerach yes i think hvs do see primary age children
you could phone them first and enquire generally about it

OP posts:
TooTicky · 11/02/2009 20:10

I think HVs only deal with 5s and under.
Ouch about the ulcer. Ds1 is prone to those.
Vitamin C and sleep.

Guadalupe · 11/02/2009 20:11

ah, all mine had dried apricots. Lovely brown toffeeness.

FrayedKnot · 11/02/2009 20:30

at eating 12 dried apricots

You must have a cast iron constitution Ms Franny.

I have decided despite the unseasonalness of it I need to eat a salad once a day, otherwise I just can;t do 10.

Which is fine, because I love salad. I just need to be organized about it because it doesn;t come in the veg box or grow in the garden at this time of year

Any advice for a raging nearly 5 year old?

He is so angry about everything and anything.

I am weary.

FrayedKnot · 11/02/2009 20:31

Oh, I think I misread!

lol

ahundredtimes · 11/02/2009 20:45

LittleRach - yes, you can go and see GP on your own. I did. GP not really qualified for this. Explain your worries, and the schools. Ask for GP to refer you for a Paed consultation at the hospital - which he should do esp if school have expressed worries. Then Paed will look, and maybe send you on to an OT. This is what we did. Paed had quite broad brush strokes. DS2 not very dyspraxic anyway, but worth getting in the system in case you need it later IMO.

Don't worry too much. Just think of it as knowledge being a useful thing. Equally, might just be a bit clumsy - there are plenty of clumsy people in the world who aren't dyspraxic. If her work is good, if they can read her work then you are fine probably! How bike riding, shoe lace tying, knives and forks, climbing over gates, climbing anything, chewing, sitting on chairs (!) pouring etc?

LIZS on here is good on dyspraxia, you could put out a thread for her.

ahundredtimes · 11/02/2009 20:50

My food focus is going well. Have eaten loads of beans and veg, keep forgetting the fruit. BUT new regime going well by day 3. Home made muesli everyone loves, so that's good.

Must go and focus on rest of life now.

ahundredtimes · 11/02/2009 20:51

Also worth doing if dd2 is getting stressed LR. Simple things can help with that - like lists, and routines and clear, helpful explaining, clothes in order, lots of talking. Sorry, can't remember how old she is.

ahundredtimes · 11/02/2009 20:54

Also we were flooded once Fra. I think it is just about one of the worst things that has EVER happened to me. I hated the house after that.

FrannyandZooey · 11/02/2009 20:55

very invasive i'd imagine 100 your safe territory is kind of shat on

AtillaTheHoney · 11/02/2009 20:58

FK....have you tried the ermm....tired, can't finsd words...things with the Omega oils (3 and 6 I think).

They made a marked difference oto our DS...and you ccan get some ok tasting ones.

And I agreee about going to docs without DD LR. ppersonally I think it is a good idea to start with because you can talk without her beinh self consciosu

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 11/02/2009 20:58

Oh yes, that reminds me. I made some granola and it was DIVINE. Better than enything I have bought - it had a fresher and less cardboard type taste to it.

dried fruit
banana
blueberries
oj
salad
tomatoes
onions
celery
carrots

Good luck at the dermatologist tomorrow Franny. Hopefully you'll get some answers/suggestions.

ahundredtimes · 11/02/2009 21:00

OMG Fra. So awful. dd was 2 weeks old. I had to carry her out above my head, water knee high. Firemen and dh put furniture up on recycling boxes, ds2 stared, ds1 took his clothes off and JUMPED IN.

I cried like a loon. Then you have to dry the place out, and everything is ruined. And every time it rains, you cry. I tried to stop the water coming in with a measuring jug I was in my nightdress too.

ahundredtimes · 11/02/2009 21:03

Water WAIST high actually.

pinkspottywellies · 11/02/2009 21:03

Oh 100x it sounds awful like being burgled. As in, the invasive-ness not the swimming ds1

Right. Must away to bed.

TooT. Spatone.

ahundredtimes · 11/02/2009 21:06

The men who came after - I can't remember who they were, they said we were lucky it was water off the fields, as someone had sewage come through their house

ahundredtimes · 11/02/2009 21:08

Actually I did a lot of crying in that house. We moved in when ds2 was two weeks old, this time, and they couldn't get any furniture up the stairs. I sat down on the floor and cried then as well. I hate that house. If I ever had another child, which I won't, when that child was two weeks old, I'd stay in bed, just in case.

Okay. Must go. Hope that has helped LR. Let me know if you want to know more - or as BBee.
