It Ain't Nece-celery So - 10 / 10 thread - with new ADDED FOCUS

For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

I'm like that Boco, all or nothing.

I started off well this morning then things went pear shaped when the day hasn't gone as planned.

TooTicky · 11/02/2009 15:09

Pear shaped sounds okay. Definitely focussed.

womblingalong · 11/02/2009 15:12

Hello Everyone!

Eh Stuffit - Sterelise F&V, why do you have to do that? I've never heard of it before.

Raisins and pineapple (dried)
Blueberries
Plums
Mushrooms
Onions

TooTicky · 11/02/2009 15:16

stuffitllama · 11/02/2009 15:32

....exits thread......

stuffitllama · 11/02/2009 16:30

List
Three bananas
Three carrots
Two apples
Boco know what you mean, if you start off brilliantly then you are motivated all day
or not if not
Hi womble, well we are told we need to sterilise all veg and fruit, including what you will cook, by anyone I talk to plus the relocation handbook.
We do it in Steriliq which is the equivalent of Milton.
This goes for anything from the market and also anything wrapped in cellophane, but I don't buy much wrapped.

If you're going to say I don't need to I'm going requisition a pointy hug from Toot and lob it at you.

TooTicky · 11/02/2009 16:34

Here Stuffit, keep it handy:

MamaG · 11/02/2009 16:40

happy belated birthday TF

Did you win that house clean thing ages ago? Iwas thinking about it in bed last night (i know, I'm a saddo) whilst feeding BabyG

I do find these threads hard to keep up with and I'm on MN a LOT. I always feel like I'm on the sidelines of F&V waving furiously and not being noticed

Mushrooms
thats it

FrayedKnot · 11/02/2009 16:41

Crikey stuffit that does seem extreme, but presumably there are good reasons for the advice.

Can you get fruit that needs peeling (bananas, citrus?) would you need to sterilize them? You couldn;t sterilize a banana though, could you

Polly DS isn;t the greatest veg eater and so sometimes inevitably I do cook different things. When it's a meal which has veg as an accompaniment (sausages e.g.) then I do 3-4 different veg including at least one that I know DS likes. If it's something like lasagne we have it with a big salad and DS has carrot sticks. The things which he won;t eat like veg curry I make him something easy like pasta & tom sauce instead

Blueberries
Satsumas
Large portion veg & lentil curry

MamaG · 11/02/2009 16:42

Feel like that in RL too at the mo

Been made redundant and whilst I'm happy about it, I do feel very lonely today.

I need to FOCUS on making RL friends where I live I think

FrayedKnot · 11/02/2009 16:42

Og god Boco that was my day yesterday.

Today has been better (me) although DS still being pretty atrocious

Roll on half term

Guadalupe · 11/02/2009 16:47

Aw, you've really recently had a baby too, MamaG. I think it often feels lonely sat at home with a very small one. I used to want to get out of the house but felt loath to try new groups with that inevitable friendship dating that you have to go through before meeting people you actually get on with.

You will do though. Make sure you get out every day, once it warms up sitting in the park won't be such a torture either.

Tigerfeet - belated happy birthday. Hope you had a nice day.

MamaG · 11/02/2009 16:52

Thanks Guad

Guadalupe · 11/02/2009 17:04

There there. Have some hot chocolate, and cake. God, I don't think I would have survived early motherhood without cake.

Which reminds me, dd skipped out of school today and said, Mummy, you know the cake sale on Friday, well, you don't just go and buy the cakes you know. You have to make them so there are some to sell. I said you would.

marvellous.

mollyroger · 11/02/2009 17:05

How ARE YOU ALL TODAY?

melon
grapes
leek and potato soup
blueberries.

bloody cold here and feeling coughy and tired.

mollyroger · 11/02/2009 17:06

MamaG, are you near me?? I have a crap memory but I think you're not too far.

Guadalupe · 11/02/2009 17:06

FINE THANKS

stuffitllama · 11/02/2009 17:12

Why thankyou Toot. Gosh on the outside they're all prickly.

Mamag have you been made redundant on maternity leave? have you been through this elsewhere? Sorry if I missed it.

It's true what Guad says. It's a huge adjustment for you and the switch into making friends with people just because they have children the same age seems a bit stultifying the outside, but from the inside is perfect and natural.

A friend of mine (nice normal person honest mlud) once followed a mum with a pram home and knocked on her door because she knew absolutely no one with a baby in the area and liked the look of her.

Possibly against the law nowadays, who knows. Oh yes and cake as well of course.

Guad.. bought plain cakes, homeiced, with a malteser on top. That's all I have to say on the subject.

stuffitllama · 11/02/2009 17:14

hello Molly
of blueberries

stuffitllama · 11/02/2009 17:15

lol at mamag madly waving bananas and mangoes

womblingalong · 11/02/2009 17:33

Stuffit,

I never do that when I am there, just wash in bottled water, but I also have not been very often. I have family in the country, and prob know peeps not too far from you, so will make enquiries and update soon. Will FB you tonight, when I am back from work.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 11/02/2009 17:40

Oh MamaG, it is hard. After having ds, the honeymoon period of staying at home and never moving from the sofa ended at about 12 weeks, and I then realised I had to get my arse in gear and put myself out there. Have you got any NCT coffee mornings or baby and toddler groups you can go to? They can be all be a bit cringe worthy at first, but then you get to spot the people you can identify with. Sorry to hear about the redundancy, what a shitter. There's so much of it about.

FrannyandZooey · 11/02/2009 17:50

MamaG this is my advice on making friends
you will get funny looks if you actually go up to people and ask to go home with them
however you CAN go up to likely looking types and strike up a conversation about eg "how old is yours? oh, mine's 4 months." etc THEN say "so, do you know any good groups around here?"

then when you go to the group you will hopefully 'know' at least one person there
and just stick with it, it takes ages to infiltrate a group doesn't it
there is a woman at one of my groups DESPERATE to make friends and every week i see the group of friends NOT ask her for coffee
she keeps pegging away at it though, she will get there
