For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

HUNGARIAN RED CABBAGE

1 lb red cabbage
1 large cooking apple
1 large onion
1 tbsp brown sugar
2 tbsp water
2 tbsp white wine vinegar
salt and pepper
1/2 tbsp fat (traditionally lard is used but substitute animal friendly alternatives if you want)

Melt fat over a gentle heat.
Add other ingredients (obviously you need to shred cabbage, chop onion etc first) in layers.
With lid on, simmer very gently for approx 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
Goes well with sausages, roast pork, and, in our family, is a must with Christmas dinner, and is much better reheated on subsequent days (when the flavour has mellowed and blended) than on the first day.

There you go. You probably already do this but it is my only ticket into this world of fruit and veg worship.

DumbledoresGirl · 21/12/2008 12:53

Now, can anyone get me eating fruit, other than berries, apples, satsumas and the occasional banana.

And, more to the point, ds2 will only eat bananas and very occasionally apple puree (ie apple sauce with roast pork, or a tiny bit of apple crumble). Anyone got any ideas how I can make him try (and like) new fruits? He is 11 (today!) btw, so not a baby.

TooTickyDoves · 21/12/2008 12:53

Ooh yum

TooTickyDoves · 21/12/2008 12:55

What do you want to eat that you don't already? Is fruit salad too obvious?

DumbledoresGirl · 21/12/2008 13:02

I jsut really don't like fruit. I eat some because I know I should, but I really struggle most times of year to get 5 a day inside me. So I thought if someone had a lovely recipe for something, eg some fruit slathered in chocolate or cream or something, I might be inspired to eat it! And if I could fool ds2 into eating it too, that would be lovely. He even picks the glace cherries off bakewell tarts rather than eat fruit!

DasherDancerPrancerFMVixen · 21/12/2008 13:03

my big boy only likes apples, strawberries, raspberries and blackberries. Which means for months of the year, there's only apples...

Keep trying, keep trying. He ate clementines the other day and didn't hate them...

DasherDancerPrancerFMVixen · 21/12/2008 13:03

I can turn almost any kind of fruit into a cake....

TooTickyDoves · 21/12/2008 13:05

I don't think there's anything wrong with eating more veg than fruit. What about juices?
And you can dip fruit in chocolate...

TooTickyDoves · 21/12/2008 13:06

It is a matter of getting nice fruit too. No cunting mangoes or woolly apples or dry oranges

DumbledoresGirl · 21/12/2008 13:06

LOL I gave ds2 three tiny grapes in his lunchbox the other day as a joke because for about 9 years I have been trying to get him to just taste one, and to my surprise, when the lunchbox came home that evening, there was a tiny nibble out of one of the grapes! He had tried it because he thought I was saying he had to eat them. He was not impressed with them though and also not impressed to learn I had put them in his lunchbox as a joke!

DumbledoresGirl · 21/12/2008 13:07

.

TooTickyDoves · 21/12/2008 13:07

Does he like sweet foods generally? [curious]

TooTickyDoves · 21/12/2008 13:07

Look above your head, there are five of them hanging there.

MamaG · 21/12/2008 13:07

That would be great fmv

Coincidentally, my baby loves being cuddled

Shit - I gave DH my mobile as he washed his in teh machine and told him to call me when he was ready to be collected. I have no credit and he's in the middle of some woods miles from anywhere - I've just topped up online and he's been out for hours!!!

I'm going to lie nad say I topped it up hours ago it must have only just got through

daftpunk · 21/12/2008 13:08

happy christmas vixen dude...and to all you fruities...

(underrated...if you still post on here, i still have the list you did for me back in june ... )

DumbledoresGirl · 21/12/2008 13:09

Actually, he is quite fussy all round and has strange likings you would not expect in a child, eg he loves all fish, and he even seemed to like olives briefly at one point. But he hates sweets and chips and other things children are supposed to like.

I would say he is a conservative eater rather than one with a specific weakness for sweet foods.

TooTickyDoves · 21/12/2008 13:09

MamaG, serves him right for washing his own [hard]

I want to go and be cuddled by Fmv [soft]

TooTickyDoves · 21/12/2008 13:10

That sounds pretty cool actually DG

TooTickyDoves · 21/12/2008 13:12

Hello DaftPunk
Speaking of punks, I finally found a vegan stollen recipe on a site called PostPunkKitchen.

daftpunk · 21/12/2008 13:16

hi tooticky...i remember you from when i posted on here back in june (only lasted a few days im afraid)

have you got a ds around 8 into dr.who...or am i getting you mixed up?

FrayedKnot · 21/12/2008 13:21

'Lo

DS is having a wooden castle for Christmas, plus stocking.

Apparently we are going swimming in a minute [groan]

F&V so far...tomato sAUCE on top of pizza, and tiny portion of salad

I have some blueberries in the fridge

FrayedKnot · 21/12/2008 13:24

I think you have to persevere a bit with fruit, DG. I used not to eat much at all, never fancied it, but since making myslef do it for 10/10, I actually fancy it much more now.

I often think I'd like a nice crispy apple whereas I never would have bothered in my pre-10/10 days.

TooTickyDoves · 21/12/2008 13:24

Yes, ds2 (7) loves Dr Who
Also have dd1 (12), ds1 (9) and dd2 (3).

Hello FK, I don't envy you the swimming

DumbledoresGirl · 21/12/2008 13:29

I do persevere. I would feel guilty if a day went by without me eating at least one bit of fruit (I am much better eating salad and veggies) but I know I need to improve. And I also know that the fact that dh hates fruit (claims he is a "super taster" - ie all fruit tastes bitter to him ) contributes to the fact that my children don't really eat much fruit either.

Have fun swimming! (good exercise!) We are about to sit down to roast lamb (parsnips and leeks) and then we are going to the cinema to see Madagascar 2.

littlerach · 21/12/2008 13:29

DG, I eat more veg than fruit, though I'm getting better.

i also don't really like fruit juice.

I manage pears, bananas and grapes.
I only eat apples in a crumble or chopped up small
I don't like oranges, or OJ, or orange chocolate

I like all veg except mushrooms.
