Kewcumber's Been In Hospital - her blood isn't Clotting

You may have missed Kewcumber around mumsnet for the past week, she has, sadly, been in hospital. They are trying to increase her platelets but it has been a long process. She is keeping her spirits up but missing her ds immensely although her dm has been bringing him to see her every day. For any of you that would like to see the side-effects of blood not clotting I've posted a couple of pictures of Kewcumbers arms on my profile (don't look at if you have a needle phobia!).

She is having the best treatment possible and is hoping that the double dose of everything (trust Kew!) that she is being given at the moment will ensure that she is home (and mumsneting!) very soon.

I'm sure she'll be updating you with all the gory details once she is online.

Pixie - do the steriods make your skin feel a bit sunbrunt? Difficult to separate the infection from teh side effects at the moment!

North Walian then, never mind

Hey Jackie - do you mind if I use that photo of our DS's on a photo montage?

FabioVicePeeperPlopper · 23/09/2008 19:24

why no dark chocolate?

Bubble99 · 23/09/2008 19:31

OMG.

That's one hellavu week, Kew.

It must have been very frightening. Good that you've got a diagnosis and let's hope it was caused by the drugs.

XX

Kewcumber · 23/09/2008 19:35

apparently dark chocolate thins the blood same as red wine and aspirin - though suspect you may have to eat quite a lot of it!

FabioVicePeeperPlopper · 23/09/2008 19:40

Really?

Wow.

I had no idea.
So in the normal course of events, one should scarf an entire box of Black Magic before one's Easy JEt experience?

Goody!

Were you accused suspected of ODing on chocolate, entirely accidentally?

Oh dear you pooor thing.

Kewcumber · 23/09/2008 20:12

A meal of red wine and dark chocolate followed by an aspirin chaser is by all accoutns very healthy, unless you're not clotting already when it is frowned upon.

I must admit the show-man in me did rather enjoy giving my discharge paper to the GP today and watch her face as she got to hte platelets = 0 bit I swear her jaw really did hit the floor.

How long had you had symptoms she asked me - umm about an hour...

I really hope at the very least I will be in a medical taxt somewhere

"The Woman who had No Platelets" has a certain ring to it don't you think?!

FabioVicePeeperPlopper · 23/09/2008 20:18

I shall keep an eye on the BMJ and Woman's Weekly.

Would you like me to eat all the chococlate and drink allthe wine in your house, lest you be tempted?

[utterly selfless]

Change your name to KewClotter. Oh g'wan, pleeease. People will ask why the name change and you can say

I NEARLY MELTED

or whatever would've happened.

Kewclotter · 23/09/2008 20:30

always happy to oblige...

uptomyeyes · 23/09/2008 20:41

OMG - just caught up with all of this (...what was I doing over the weekend to miss this??)

EEwww those bruises but glad you are finally getting to the bottom of it.

Keep getting better Kewc ....and that boy of yourse is sssooooo handsome

FabioVicePeeperPlopper · 23/09/2008 20:59

JackieNo · 23/09/2008 21:08

lol at KewClotter. Yes, by all means do use that pic of our DSs .

spicemonster · 23/09/2008 21:14

How have I missed this thread?

You poor thing - how scary! And painful! And dramatic!

Right, that's more than enough exclamation marks in one post. So glad you're home although sorry to hear about the pill diet you're on. Presumably you can still eat croissants though? So not all bleak

I shall check in for regular updates from now on

thumbwitch · 23/09/2008 23:07

Fabio, Black Magic won't cut it, sorry - needs to be the good stuff (70%+ cocoa) to really be any good. I have a dodgy clotting condition so when I go to Australia, I always arm myself with G&B dark chocolate, have red wine and a couple of aspirin (wards off the hangover from too much red wine at dodgy pressure and oxygenation levels )

It's the flavonoids in the choc and red wine that help reduce clottiness.

Kew, perhaps that should be kewnonclotter? Glad you saw the GP and got some help - hope it fixes the problem

Kewclotter · 23/09/2008 23:30

ah but thumbwitch I'm no longer a non-clotter! Could clot for England now...

Spice - can beleive that you missed my drama and have only arrived in time for me to show off about my peculiarites.

Kewclotter · 23/09/2008 23:33

I have some 70+ with oarnge and almond stashed in the cupboard I keep looking longingly at. Probably wouldn;t do any harm but frnakly not in a mood to risk it!

Horrible metallic taste in mouth from steriods though - bit of dark choc would work a treat...

thumbwitch · 23/09/2008 23:34

Kew - a tiny bit won't hurt, just enough to take the taste away
glad your clotability is back up there

bellabelly · 23/09/2008 23:52

Just seen this thread, Kewcumber, glad you are out now and hope th echocolate and wine ban isn't too awful for you.

Pixiefish · 24/09/2008 07:32

Kew- the steroids thin your skin yes. they also make it peel more than normal and also make your teeth likelier to break so just be careful of eating hard things (or at least this was the case 15-20 years ago but this may have changed by now) Never heard the one about no dark chocolate though.

No asprin and no alcohol while on the steroids though and I'm not allowed asprin even now but used to drink red wine and no side effects

blueshoes · 24/09/2008 08:42

oh, kew, sorry to have missed this. Your posts do make me laugh even though it is crap what you are going through. Glad you manage to keep your spirits up. I am wishing you bountiful platelets, infection-free arm and lots of hugs for your dear ds. Hope this clears up soon.

wilbur · 24/09/2008 08:56

Only just seen this Kewcumber - so sorry you've been in the wars. I had ITP as a teenager (not sure I ever got down to 0 platelets though!) and I remember the unpleasantness of the steroids. Hope they are able to wean you off them soon. Take care of yourself.

Kewclotter · 24/09/2008 10:52

ironically because the steriods control the inflammation, the infection in the arm isn;t too bad until later in the day when it burns. One advantage to being Queen of the Steriods!

Kewclotter · 24/09/2008 10:56

I missed a trick last week, I could have pressed cookie cutter letter shapes into my forehead/arms/legs and had word bruises spelling all sorts of things out to various medical personnel. Why did I not think of it?

KristinaM · 24/09/2008 11:12

just to add to the general doom and gloom - AFAIK you cant have ANY alcohol ( not just wine) while you are on metronidazole

Kewclotter · 24/09/2008 11:14

true Kris - but I think I'm only on them a week (must check) so not too big a problem.

FabioVicePeeperPlopper · 24/09/2008 11:19

lol at cookie cutter bruise tattoos

are you sure it's not too late now?
could you come off the drugs for 24hours to do them?
