Kewcumber's Been In Hospital - her blood isn't Clotting

You may have missed Kewcumber around mumsnet for the past week, she has, sadly, been in hospital. They are trying to increase her platelets but it has been a long process. She is keeping her spirits up but missing her ds immensely although her dm has been bringing him to see her every day. For any of you that would like to see the side-effects of blood not clotting I've posted a couple of pictures of Kewcumbers arms on my profile (don't look at if you have a needle phobia!).

She is having the best treatment possible and is hoping that the double dose of everything (trust Kew!) that she is being given at the moment will ensure that she is home (and mumsneting!) very soon.

I'm sure she'll be updating you with all the gory details once she is online.

ok will be in touch poor poppet he must be upset but surely will soon settle

francagoestohollywood · 22/09/2008 21:26

Completely missed this. Kew, how's the arm?

mehgalegs · 22/09/2008 21:28

Oh Kew, have only just seen this. Glad you are home, hope the arm is ok. x

Kewcumber · 22/09/2008 22:35

arm is sore - pretty sure it an infection as its very hot but I'm already on amoxycillin and metranidozole.

KristinaM · 22/09/2008 23:16

hi kew, you might need to see soemone about that arm. i know you are two types of antibiotics but there are some nasty bugs around hospitals and you might need something different

but anyway, stop wittering on about your medical dramas and come over onto your usual threads and give us your words of wisdom

its great IYKWIM that you have velcro baby - no major attachment issues there then

thumbwitch · 22/09/2008 23:16

hi Kew - don't know a huge amount about antibiotics but I do know that they tend to be sort of specific for different areas of the bod - having just checked, it appears that the metronidazole is supposed to take care of skin structure infections. Is it swollen as well? If it is, then I think you should consider getting a doc to see it. Sooner rather than later.

Kewcumber · 22/09/2008 23:20

feels more liek the muscle uner the sking than the skin IYSWIM. So metronidazole may not be effective though I know it is usd for all sorts of anaerobic infections so should be vaguely the right one. If I start feeling ill I will ring my mum but otherwise I'll go inthe morning.

Sorry Kris - so hung up on getting other things sorted I haven't wandered onto other topics... will get around to it tomorrow.

thumbwitch · 22/09/2008 23:22

ok, but if it gets more swollen and more hot then go quicker - I doubt it very much under the circs but there is a minor risk you might have a clot! Wouldn't that be ironic...

Kewcumber · 22/09/2008 23:25

pmsl

Oh how I would laugh...

KristinaM · 22/09/2008 23:29

no you bloody wouldnt

newforold · 23/09/2008 09:04

Kewcumber- was reading this thread and was just about to post to say it sounds very similar to what I have which is ITP and then I realised you'd had a diagnosis.

I have had mine since I was 16- exactly the same thing happened to me- bleeding, pupura, weak, tired.

Given platelets and steroids and follow up with haematologist who I see at various intervals depending on my blood levls

Have had a couple of episodes since where I've been hospitalised. Also had problems with losing blood when I had my girlies. Viruses/colds hit me hard as my immunity is crap so I have a flu jab every year and a pneumonia jab when I rememeber. Apart for this I am generally fine although they have been muttering about removing my spleen as they think the hypersplenism could have something to do with it- but they can't say for definite until they take the spleen out.

Im 38 now and am generally fine. Just to let you know that if it is a long term case then it's not a problem in your day to day life.

Fish is also good for platelets apparently lol- I was force fed fish by my mother for years

cupsoftea · 23/09/2008 09:20

Sorry this happening to you - hope that you will be ok soon xxx

fransmom · 23/09/2008 09:20

oh dear.
get well soon kew xxxx

Kewcumber · 23/09/2008 09:34

Thanks for all teh advice last night - arm hasn't got any worse so off to the GP this morning. I was a teensy bit paranoid about MRSA and think becoming a hypochondriac could be very easy...

Pixie - great to hear form someone else with ITP - realise it would have been so much worse and with a bit of luch it may be an acute episode triggered by a drug I recently started on (no-one knows yet) so even better I could be off treatemnet completely after a few months.

Thanks again for support - will try not to have a panic every might!

Pixiefish · 23/09/2008 09:39

You have to be careful though Kew. Your ability to fight infection is compromised at the moment and you do need to take care

Marina · 23/09/2008 09:41

Missed this over the weekend. Really sorry to hear you have had this kew and hope you make a full recovery asap.

Kewcumber · 23/09/2008 09:48

Yes Pixie - I really hadn't appreciated how such such high doss of steriods not only mask infection but also reduce your ability to fight them - double whammy. Am just not sure that my GP will be prepared to add another antibiotic to the cocktail I'm already taking... we'll see.

Out of interest where is Llanbidinodyn? I grew up in Llanelli.

KristinaM · 23/09/2008 10:11

hi kew, how are you feeling today? did you see your gp and did she swab it for you? Hope it isn't that horrid old bat you used to have

Kewcumber · 23/09/2008 17:21

nice GP- added another AB to the current mix of steriods, two existing AB's and antacid - flucloxcillin (sp?) to complicate matters steriodsa are 6 tablets once a day before food, antacid 1 tablet twice a day, two differnt AB's one three times a day after food and new AB four times a day on an EMPTY stomach. My head hurts! When do I find the time in that lot for an empty stomach?!

Helpfully the pharmacist dispensed them and raised an eyebrow "You're not going to feel good on all of these", yeah thanks for that . She also helpfully suggested I try not to take them all at the same time - because with that time table its likely I'll be taking them all together isn;t it!

Think I need to hire a personal assistant for at least a week.

Pixiefish · 23/09/2008 18:40

Llanbidinodyn is a made up place bit of a joke really in the family.

I actually live on Anglesey in North Wales- the place with all the LLans

JackieNo · 23/09/2008 18:48

I think you need a tablet spreadsheet Kew. Oh I do hope it all starts clearing up soon, and you can start to drop at least some of them.

KristinaM · 23/09/2008 19:14

Bummer. And you cant even have a glass of wine to cheer you up

Kewcumber · 23/09/2008 19:21

no wine, no aspirin, no dark choclate
