Hello - do you mind if I pop in here? I've run up to 10k but after a long episode of dodgy kneeness I'm back down at 5k. Although ever hopeful of getting back to it.

I'm thinking of of doing the race that BlessthisMess posted a link to on the other thread. It's a laprace I believe so you can do 5, 10 or 15k Currently I'm doing 5k twice a week on the roads and a couple of days in the gym (not running) to give my knee a break. My running mate is on her holidays though and I don't run well by myself.

Twinkie1 · 13/08/2008 09:43

Have done 10k twice this week and am really enjoying it - just got to keep it up whilst on hols!

Good luck everyone.

electricbarbarella · 13/08/2008 09:52

I am off out this morning, going to try for about 8k. did 6 at the weekend although i then had heat exhaustion in the evenig and was very very ill so am a bit worried.
I am nervous as to whether i can get up to 10k in 4 weeks but I will give it a good go.
I can't run with someone, i really enjoy the time on my own, I think that is the attraction.

Good morning everyone!

How fab to see you all - I was wondering how you were all getting on.

I managed a very hilly 5k in st ives, but lots and lots of running around on the beach and surfing, so I suppose that counts. The walk back to our flat was near vertical, I kept chanting buns of steel to myself as I walked back.

Kids at home and off camping next week, so I don't think I'm going to get much running done. (OH busy working)
Keep on going!

Flier · 13/08/2008 10:00

all you lot doing 10k am .

I've a 10k run to train for in October and my training hasn't been going too well, although was very pleased with myslef when I ran for 15mins without a break - its the longest I've run yet .

I just feel that I'm never going to manage to do this 10k

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 13/08/2008 10:00

It's a bit odd actually eb - because although we go out together, we don't actually run together (apart from the first mile). I'm a bit faster than her but she can run for longer, but just knowing she's a bit behind me keeps me going. Also it means we can run along the canal towpath which I probably wouldn't if I was alone. It is fab to just have time alone I agree.

Did you drink plenty on your run? Going from 5 to 10 in 4 weeks is doable I'd say. Are you just extending one or two of your weekly runs?

electricbarbarella · 13/08/2008 12:17

I just got back, only did 5k today, have decided to do 2 5k and extend my sunday run, next week I will do 7.5 or 8 on sunday but only do 5 again in the week. does that sound like a plan.
My6 brother reckons if you can do 5 you can do 10 as a one off but i don't want to either kill or embarass myself.
Flier 15mins in one go is great, you will be amazed how quick it builds up from there, I think you have done the worst bit.
Bramble i can't believe you ran on holiday, now that is decication.

Flier · 13/08/2008 12:21

thanks electricbarbarella. How long does it take you to run 5k?

electricbarbarella · 13/08/2008 12:33

34 mins, but I am very slow. more like enthusiastic shuffling than running

no lurking, come on in.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 13/08/2008 13:15

Popsy! - How you doing?

eb - yes good plan - just extend one of your runs that way you're less likely to get injured or just plain old worn out. You could do some intervals on one of your shorter runs. I hate these but they are supposed to be good for stamina and speed.

Random question - why do folks pay for a gym membership and than just sit around on the weight machines gossipin? Wouldn't it be cheaper to just go for a coffee?

HarrogateMum · 13/08/2008 13:26

can I join? I am doing a 10k in Wetherby in one months time......the furthest I hvae run is 10km, once but usually do 3 runs a week of about 5-7kms per time. I would dearly love to do the 10k in less than 1 hour, bu at this stage it takes me about an hour and 8 minutes so not gong to happen.....!

electricbarbarella · 13/08/2008 13:45

I think 1 hour 8 mins is fantastic, rfl took me 34mins but i would imagine 10k will take me longer.
i have a gym membership, haven't been for about 6 months although I take dd swimming every week in term time which just about pays for it and I will go a lot in the winter. I remember 2 ladies chatting on the rowing machines, how can you do that, you are not rowing propely if you can chat.

SparklyPrincess · 13/08/2008 14:38

I'm in... off to do 3.5 miles (dh reckons its psychologically easier in miles than in km - I reckon he's mad but I'm humouring him at the moment!)

Got a busy few weeks with hols and dd's birthday so planning on maintaining at 3 to 3.5 miles and concentrate on making sure I get out. Going to have to run in my parents village - thinking of wearing a bag on my head in case I come across any old school mates!

Nice to see a bit more movement on this thread - it's great motivation!

I always used to pay for a gym membership and end up mostly in the sauna . Thinking about joining up for the winter though as I'm not good at going out in the dark...

popsycal · 13/08/2008 20:18

oooh have to lurk - am 34 weeks pregnant!!!

Itsthawooluff · 15/08/2008 16:01

Still here - had a bit of a relapse, but am back with Rawb, and working my way up again.

Furball · 15/08/2008 16:12

I'm still pounding the pavements! down to twice a week because of school hols. don't listen to rawb anymore have my own stuff, but I am truely grateful to him for actually getting me out the door.

HarrogateMum · 17/08/2008 12:03

well I just got back from a 6.5 mile run. I was trying to do 10km to see what my time was and my legs feel like someone has hit them with a sledgehammer. Does it ever get any easier??

HarrogateMum · 17/08/2008 14:20

ps what is rawb?

Furball · 17/08/2008 14:38

rawb is an american guy called robert who we had a podcast for for running from couch to 5km over 8 weeks.

HarrogateMum · 17/08/2008 15:58

sounds good - there is no way I would ever have got back into running if it wasnt for a neighbour who said she fancied running, otherwise there is always some excuse I can find! Better go, DD has just taken off all her clothes and weed on the floor...nice.

thesockmonsterofdoom · 17/08/2008 17:00

I haven't been out since last wednesday, I have had a bit of a stressy week. I am starting to wonder if I am going to make the 10K.

SparklyPrincess · 19/08/2008 14:03

I'm keeping my eyes peeled for a 10k next spring. It helps me to have a deadline!

Getting a bit concerned about maintainining the momentum over the winter. I've got to the point I can do a 5k without feeling I'm going to die and I don't want to slip back! Difficult cos I'm a sahm, youngest is only 1 so can't get my running shoes on til dh gets home from work... Not an immense fan of going out on cold, dark evenings...

Anyway, have a twisted ankle from hill-walking at weekend so I'm waiting for that to stop hurting at the moment. Hopefully get out tomorrow but we'll have to see!

toadette · 19/08/2008 14:34

Hi, would like to join this thread too

Have a 10k in a few weeks time. Can't get out running as much at the moment due to school hols but did manage 6.5 miles (just over 10k?) a week or two ago. Hope I can keep distance up for the race, time was very slow though - about 1hr 10 mins - would like to be a bit faster than that. Think it's all about pushing out of the comfort zone for me - I started running three years ago and ran 5k distances all the time before finally deciding to push myself further a few months ago. Ran 5 miles on my next run, then the 6.5 miled on the next - completely surprised myself at how achievable the extra distance actually was in the end!
