For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page.

mrsc we tried olive oil and it was kind of greasy and the flakes just rolled off into the grease [queasy]
just found some Green People baby moisturiser which at least smells nice

btw I really did have fruit earlier as well as the yogurt
just thought it sounded like I was trying to pass off a peach yogurt as a portion

IdrisTheDragon · 29/07/2008 16:34

I was wondering whether it was a peach yoghurt

IdrisTheDragon · 29/07/2008 16:37

Franny, there is someone wanting beyond the treasure basket thoughts here

Just in case you don't have anything else to do with your time

UnderRated · 29/07/2008 17:57

'Ello

I used olive oil on DS too - was messy and um oily. And smelt too much like oil.

Sorry for crappy midwife.

Had a 'lively debate' with my doc this morning re coming off ADs:

Me: I want to stop taking them. I'm doing really well.
Dr: Well, yes, you are. But I think your life is so unpredictable and beyond your control, I think we should wait.
Me: Ok, wait for what? For how long?
Him: Until things are less stressful
Me: But life is never going to be not stressful, is it?
Him: Well, no...
Me: And I can't be on them forever
Him: Well, you could but you probably won't need to be
Me: So, just indefinitely then?
Him: Well, let's say, a year or so
Me: Whhhaaaaaat?
Him: Ok, well if you are doing as well as you are next time I see you and everything is super, we'll talk about it then. Ok?
Me: grumble grumble ok grumble grumble

Banana, grapes (2).

UR I am glad you feel well enough to come off the ads
hopefully doctor will agree once he gets used to the idea

hummus
black eyed beans
artichoke hearts
salad - lettuce, cucumber, pepper, tomato

and garlic bread and stuffed vine leaves mmmmhmmm

UnderRated · 29/07/2008 18:16

Thanks Franny. How are the DC today? My friend who had her baby the day after you had DS2 is struggling. I'm not sure how to help. I took gifts and food but I can't do much in the middle of the night or to help them sleep.

I have some v disappointing dolmas. I am going to feed them to my mother.

Tatties · 29/07/2008 18:17

Ds was really flaky too. I don't think we did anything about it, apart from the odd sore/red patch, for which vaseline did the trick.

UR I would love to hear about your crochet progress (I have put a pic on my profile of my first crochet square!) Could you see a different doctor?

FrannyandZooey · 29/07/2008 18:24

oh UR oh dear
I think we are being really lucky so far then
he mostly just sleeps I think, with one really unsettled period usually in the evening, and some awake periods where he just looks around or does something like have a bath, and he settles well at night once he has had a feed
we're co-sleeping which in my limited experience does help with this early stage (it is later on it half kills you )
alternatively he should be feeding and waking MUCH MORE and he is going to get ill again, oh dear
he was very sleepy in the hosp at times and I kept having to wake him to have a proper feed
perhaps he is slipping back into that and I haven't noticed because it is so convenient to have a baby that sleeps

UnderRated · 29/07/2008 18:28

Tatties, that square is FAB. I haven't ever made one like that. I found a pattern in my book and thought I'd like to give it a go when I have finished the things I am working on. Was it hard? It looks complicated. I spent 5 hours on my shawl on Sunday then undid the whole thing yesterday and have started with a different pattern. I really like it now.

I quite like my Dr (even if he isn't handsome or called Tom) so will wait this out. He's probably right. I tend to be rather hasty at times. I did warn him that I am stubborn and will persist with my request and he laughed and said, "I know"

UnderRated · 29/07/2008 18:30

But some babies do sleep a lot, Franny. As long as he is feeding well, I am sure he is ok. When is he being checked again? Or will it be by the unhelpful MW who said 'BF well'?

FrayedKnot · 29/07/2008 18:37

Franny how many feeds is DS having in a 24 hr period? Have they said he must feed x times or anything?

The number 8 keeps coming to mind...is it 8 in 24 hrs?

I used to have to wake DS, and take off his babygro and it felt cruel but he was very sleepy for the first 4-5 weeks.

I only had to wake him in teh day, though, he woke himself just fine at night

UR...have you felt ready to come off the ADs for long? I was on ADs for 4 years a few years ago. It felt funny not taking them anymore. But I think you know when it feels right to you.

IdrisTheDragon · 29/07/2008 18:38

UR - I am taking ADs and a couple of months ago went to the doctor and wondered about cutting them down. He said that he wanted to feel I had been improved for longer before doing that. I felt a bit grr about it but agreed.

I went again (to same doctor but this was coincidental as it is a moderately large practice with lots of doctors) and this time he was the one who suggested it might be time to cut down. This time I am the one saying we will give it a couple of months .

Not sure if this is any help or not, but I do know about the feeling of wanting to not take the ADs

UnderRated · 29/07/2008 18:54

Thanks Idris & FK. I am happy to be cautious because I am a bit scared of what may happen when I do stop but I also want to feel like I am ok and that I don't need them. Or don't want to need them.

I think I am ready but I suppose a few more months won't hurt. Will be patient and bide my time

pinkspottywellies · 29/07/2008 20:19

I guess the old witch didn't come then Franny? Tom it is then?!

Was it stuffit who moved far, far away with a mango tree? Has she gone? Is she coming back?

berolina · 29/07/2008 20:21

Evening all. 1-hand typing & no patience so brief no.

Franny, FK is right about the 8x in 24h as a rough minimum - and they shouldn't go longer than 3h in the day. I have never had a sleeping baby , so my experience is probably of little use directly. Then of course there's all the weeing & pooing stuff. (I will never forget my intense joy over ds2's yellow poos. ds1's were mostly greenish, even though he only had formula during the first 4 weeks and after that never again. ds2's classic-bf-baby poos gave me such a sense of relief and satisfaction. Sorry, OT and TMI). Do you want any nice Weleda cream for ds?

UR, can't advise on ADs, but you sound very clear-heaed about it.

blueberries peach redcurrants apple carrot cucumber plum
Have not had dinner yet.

ds1 took some really quite good photos in the botanic garden this morning. In the afternoon we made a cash register and I am going to hide the play money my parents sent in it for him to find. Will put pics in later.

berolina · 29/07/2008 20:23

That was not brief, was it

I am glad you think I sound clear-headed. I really am not a lunatic anymore

I dropped one of the cooker knobs down the back of it so have to pull the whole thing out and climb down to retrieve it. Thing is, I am not sure I can get back out again. So, if you don't hear from me for a couple of days, will you send someone round to feed DS & rescue me?

I'm intrigued by avi's home-ed question.

zippitippitoes · 29/07/2008 21:41

ur i think if you feel well then keep taking them for now

FrayedKnot · 29/07/2008 21:51

UR, your post "I also want to feel like I am ok and that I don't need them. Or don't want to need them." yes I know exactly what you mean.

I decreased mine extremely slowly (had some problems with withdrawal symptoms as I was on paroxetine - I hope you are not), which gave me lots of time to see if I felt OK on the lower doses. I never went backwards but psychologically I liked the thought that I could up the dose again if I needed to, without starting from scratch. I was very scared of being ill again

I even went to the point of having a pill cutter and taking 1/4 of a tablet (but that was more to do with the withdrawal symptoms than anything else).

I have yoga'd. We had a different teacher as the usual one on holiday and it was harder

FrayedKnot · 29/07/2008 21:54

Oh, and my parenting tip of the day

How to keep a 4.5 year old amused for hours

Give them a cherry pitter and a punnet of cherries

TigerFeet · 29/07/2008 21:59

I came off my AD's really, really slowly - coz of everyfink wot FK sed.

I suffer dreadfully from withdrawal syndrome no matter what AD I am on. Last time round I spent 3+ years on one AD, then doc tried to change it to another, I had a terrible reaction to that one so withdrew very very slowly and didn't bother trying a third. I was given a px for a third but didn't want to go through it all again. I think I had got to the stage where the side effects of the AD's and the looming thought of withdrawal was depressing me more than the illness itself. I had successfully weaned myself off the second drug and felt OK and have been (pretty much) OK since with the odd blip. Normal blips though, not depressive ones
