For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

Were they easy to grow, FMF? I've never managed to cook them successfully, I buy them in ravioli or in a jar

filthymindedvixen · 08/07/2008 18:22

really easy to grow, shoved in seeds but they took a long time to 'take'. So I ignored them and then, Lo! 4 plants came, all with around 4 or 5 artichokes things on

zippitippitoes · 08/07/2008 18:24

well i thought it should be a title that recognised your condition fran

UnderRated · 08/07/2008 18:30

I'm going to try them next year, FMF. If you work out how to cook them

Guadalupe · 08/07/2008 18:33

actually I don't know how you prepare them, FMV, I buy them marinaded in jars.

FrannyandZooey · 08/07/2008 18:34

me too

I do know how to eat them, though
you get some melted butter and lemon (I know that has a posh name) and you pick off a leaf, and dip it in, and scrape your teeth against the soft bit and eat it
and you don't eat the hairy bit in the middle
I think you probably just boil or steam them beforehand but I have never done that bit, only the eating part

zippitippitoes · 08/07/2008 18:35

u talking about babies or artichokes

FrayedKnot · 08/07/2008 18:36

I've never tried cooking them FMF but you must take off the outer leaves and the choke if there is one (inside)

You can bake / roast them amongst other things according to Antonio Carluccio.

But I think with artichokes smaller is better, so eat them quickly!

Had quite a good day f&v wise

Muesli with dried fruit
Bowl of fruit salad (melon, grapes, kiwi etc)
Salad filled pittas
Strawbs
Stir fry with Pak Choi, Courgette (ex garden), Baby Corn and Peppers.

FrannyandZooey · 08/07/2008 18:46

arf at eating babies

zippitippitoes · 08/07/2008 18:47

i thought marinaded in jars was quite a nice thought

UnderRated · 08/07/2008 18:48

Don't you have to wear gloves when you prepare artichokes?

TigerFeet · 08/07/2008 18:53

If you didn't eat the baby Franny, how on earth did it get in your stomach?

filthymindedvixen · 08/07/2008 19:20

They are very yummy, if a tad pernickety to prepare and eat. I am an artichoke virgin no more...

Does soaking it in a bath of butter negate the vegetably goodness?

I have also consumed a zillion homegrown strawbs, some blueberries, some rasps, and some lentil soup. Dinner is cheesey, leeky, bakey thingy. With home grown leaves

UnderRated · 08/07/2008 19:28

Butter never negates veggie goodness

How does one make a cheesey leeky bakey thing?

pinkspottywellies · 08/07/2008 19:58

TF see further down about the sperm and egg bedtime game that Franny's been playing

Zippeeeeeeeeeee! Great to see you

I had 13 portions in total yesterday! Not so fab today though. DH keeps going out so I can't run. Might try and go on the stepper tonight though.

It's just leeks, onions, peppers, bacon whatever, stir fryed, baked in oven with cheesey/mustardy sauce and pasta til bubbling and gaw-jus.
