Painful mouth ulcer not improving, any suggestions for relief?

I have this terrible ulcer in the inside of my lip. I’ve tried bonjela, iglu and it doesn’t provide any relief I think maybe because it’s rubbing on my teeth. It is so painful I’ve just taken some codine I had left over from a back injury as paracetamol isn’t touching it. I know it sounds dramatic but I really am in a lot pain, struggling to eat and drink. Does anyone have a magic cure?

These were amazing when I had a mouth ulcer. Right between my gum and lip mucosa. It was so sore. It gradually releases the numbing agent, just hold the pastille near the area in your mouth. It gave much needed relief.

Also corsodyl will help!

Neat TCP applied with a cotton bud works for me, but not everyone can cope with it.

Seek medical advice if the ulcer is more than three weeks' old.

Ooh poor you. Misery.

It needs cortisone - try to get oral cortisone lozenges from a pharmacist. They’re not very comfortable but they will heal it.

Swish salt water around your mouth. As salty as you can get it. Swill around as frequently as you can, but certainly after meals and before bed.

Same here, it stings like buggery for a few seconds then bliss. Apply several times a day. I don’t bother with the cotton bud, I put my thumb over the bottle, shake, and apply directly.

Also, DD has ulcers a lot and swears by Anbesol.

My local pharmacist recommended difflam mouth wash, which works really well to numb ulcers and give some relief.

Agree with this
I get these and they are miserable. Think they are called canker sores.

I think they stopped making tcp!Shock

MissyB1 · 27/07/2026 20:01

The pastilles are good, also get some Corsodyl.

StarsandSocks · 27/07/2026 20:03

I can vouch for the Boots own pastilles. I had a horrendous ulcer a few weeks ago and they got rid of it within a few days

Lysine supplements are an absolute gamechanger. An excellent doctor recommended them to me years ago. I don't know why they aren't recommended as standard. All the other gels are useless. Lysine clears them up within a day or two. I get them online.

Definitely haven’t, @hexsnidgett, I replenished supplies recently!

MountainBiker · 27/07/2026 20:27

How long has it been there for? If it lasts 2 weeks you need to see a dentist (but hopefully it will be long gone and no longer painful by then!)

Brackenandbrave · 27/07/2026 20:27

Dentist here. It doesn’t look sinister but the guidelines suggest if an ulcer isn’t healing you should seek advice from your dentist. How long have you had it?

FTMaz · 27/07/2026 20:32

Thanks everyone - I bought the iglu lozenges not sure if they have the same ingredients as the boots ones will check. It’s only been about 4 days but the pain has been the worse today - miserable!

I do salt water and a vitamin c tablet that you dissolve in water

Hate mouth ulcers they make me feel yuck

Youspurnme · 27/07/2026 20:36

Salty water and Difflam which will numb it. If it doesn’t go, see a dentist, they are the experts in mouth probs. (Source: DBIL is a dentist and has diagnosed oral cancers from suspected mouth ulcers)

Yourinmyspot · 27/07/2026 20:43

I use corsydl. That looks really sore, I hope you get some relief soon.

FTMaz · 27/07/2026 20:50

I realise my title says not improving when it’s actually only been 4 days 😂 I perhaps should have said pain worsening rather than not improving!

There is this stuff that hurts like an absolute hell when you are applying it but then it makes the ulcer heal quick. Can't remember the name? Comes in a bottle with an applicator stick.

When I was little my mum used egg yolk mixed with honey on my mouth ulcers. Also, egg white can help as it makes the ulcer heal - But its gross as it feels like snot.

You might be past the worst then OP. 🤞

Ramblingaway · 27/07/2026 21:29

Corsodyl comes as a gel (often behind the pharmacy counter) or as mouthwash. I find the gel better for ulcers, but if you can't get it, use the mouthwash but given where it is, I'd try painting it on with your finger a few times rather than just swilling it around your mouth as I don't think that will get you enough contact.

AlwaysAFaithful · 27/07/2026 21:33

I used to have my false was quite regularly, but I don’t anymore either. I’m taking vitamin C. I think that bit confusing because everything that I read suggests that if you get enough vitamin C through your fruit vegetables, you don’t need extra. However, it seemed to make a difference to me.

One thing that I would suggest for a very painful ulcer is putting a piece of ice directly onto it for as long as you can bear it. It is very painful when you’re doing it, but it seems to expedite the healing process.

Widoeeyes · 27/07/2026 21:34

Please go to the dentist and ask them to have a look at it
