Painful mouth ulcer not improving, any suggestions for relief?

I have this terrible ulcer in the inside of my lip. I’ve tried bonjela, iglu and it doesn’t provide any relief I think maybe because it’s rubbing on my teeth. It is so painful I’ve just taken some codine I had left over from a back injury as paracetamol isn’t touching it. I know it sounds dramatic but I really am in a lot pain, struggling to eat and drink. Does anyone have a magic cure?

I currently have a huge ulcer and I put some of my babies anbesol liquid on it. Worked amazingly to numb the pain! It's the liquid one like a gold colour you just dab on wjth finger x

I am very susceptible to mouth ulcers and it’s crazy how painful they can be. When I get a bad one it really knocks me for six, not just the localised mouth pain but quite often bad headaches, raised glands, fatigue. It’s grim.

Gels like bonjela don’t work in my experience because they don’t stick to the ulcer they just slip off. Anbesol liquid dabbed on with a cotton bud can help with pain temporarily. Keeping your mouth really clean with salt water rinses and/or corsadyl mouthwash also helps. But sadly in my experience you have to just ride it out. After about a week of misery I tend to start noticing gradual improvement. You’ll wake up one day and it won’t be quite so painful and then slowly it’ll start shrinking. But they are vile, you have my sympathies.

It’s a mouth ulcer. They are very common and unless it hasn’t healed within a few weeks or op is getting them constantly I don’t think a dentist will do a lot other than maybe offer a specific mouthwash or something. Believe me, I’ve tried doctors and dentists over the years and am yet to be taken seriously.

please see a dentist. DH had a “mouth ulcer” that wouldn’t heal. It turned out to be mouth cancer.

I had assumed when the OP said it wouldn’t go away, that it had been like this for at least a week. But subsequent updates reveal it was only 4 days

She's only had it for 4 days, she doesn't need to see a dentist.

OP my mouth ulcers always respond well to Aloclair, it coats them so you can eat comfortably, and they are gone in a few days. It comes as a mouthwash, spray or gel (I find the gel is best if the mouth ulcer is in an easy to reach location like yours). I buy on Amazon but I'm sure pharmacies stock it.

Yes sorry I realise the title of my post was misleading, I should have said the pain was worsening not that it wasn’t getting better.

i second Anbesol liquid as mentioned by someone upthread. Long term mouth ulcer sufferer, and anbesol is the most effective for pain relief out of everything I’ve tried over the years - it does sting for a few seconds, but then numbs it enough to take the edge off. You can buy it over the counter.
Hope you get some relief soon! If you’ve had it 4 days already you should hopefully be near to ‘peak pain day’, and then it will start to get less painful each day

Another one for Anbesol.

If you can bear it, salt directly on it but it hurts a lot. But it always heals much faster if I do it.

Try sucking on crushed ice to numb the pain and help reduce inflammation. Thats what I’ve done previously.

Thanks for advice everyone - it feels slightly less painful today so fingers crossed worse of it is over! Will pick up some anbesol today, have started the salt water swishing too

10000000000% Anbesol. I suffered with mouth ulcers since I was a teenager (not been as bad since B12 deficiency resolved). I use so much Anbesol when I get one but it’s a godsend. It used to say unlimited use, but now says 8 times a day. I definitely use it more than 8 times a day when I have a bad one.

Salt directly on it does seem to help it heal faster but it stings like hell!

This will work.
Sage and honey tea. Use it as a mouth wash. Hold it in your mouth.
This was the only thing that helped my son. We hunted this down online

Anbesol will numb it but it won't clear it up. I would advise you to get some lysine ASAP. I get massive ulcers and this clears them up fast.

as you’ve all been so helpful just wanted opinions on whether this looks like something I should be getting checked out? It looks worse to me today and has little dots on it - unsure if that’s normal for this type of ulcer. I initially thought the pain was better but eating is pretty much impossible still.

Op it genuinely just looks like a mouth ulcer at the moment. In all likelihood it will be gone in a week to 10 days. If it persists longer than 3 weeks get it checked but I’ve been suffering with these for years and it looks normal to me. You can see from the photo how red and inflamed it is which is why it’s so painful to eat.

Ouch, looks painful! But I still think it’s an ulcer reaching its peak. It might open up, but it will start to heal quickly.

DD used to suffer a lot with them so she’s tested all the options and she says Anbedol every time. I think it comes as a gel and a liquid, gel’s better but both good.

in addition to other suggestions, if you haven't done so for a while, change your toothbrush/toothbrush head. Old toothbrushes can contain lots of bacteria and be a cause of mouth ulcers.

The NHS has advice on mouth ulcers:

Mouth ulcers are common and should clear up on their own within a week or 2. But see a GP or dentist if you have a mouth ulcer that lasts longer than 3 weeks.
