It's great (as the mum of a child with heart problems) to hear that you have had children despite your cardiomyopathy. Dd's cardiomyopathy is much improved - at one point her ejection fraction/LV function (? is this the same thing) was 9%. The thought that she may never have her own children was cause of a huge amount of grief for me.

Misdee - hope visiting goes ok and you find your dh in good spirits.

Hello I didn't develop HCM in pregnancy it occurred a few years later but I was told no one could be 100% whether it was genetic or caused by having had high blood pressure whilst on kidney dialysis all of which can enlarge the heart After my kidney transplant doctors said my heart would probably go back to normal but it never did I did get pregnant and was advised to terminate as they hadn't enough info about my case they were unsure if HCM was obstructive or concentric the problem is every time I have an echo I get different views on it!They are now saying I probably have concentric and I could have gone ahead with the pregnancy!Could I ask did you have a caeserian? My consultant said this would be likely this time thanks

mummylonglegs · 28/01/2005 14:29

How did all of you start with your cardiomyopathy? You may have gathered from my odd postings on misdee's threads that my brother's just been diagnosed although at the moment I haven't really got a clue what's happening. Did you all develop it after a virus or were you born with it? As you can tell I'm a total novice and probably asking very obvious questions.

noddyholder · 28/01/2005 14:37

i had a kidney transplant in 1985 and was very well for 14 yrs was then told I had kidney failure again and needed another transplant. At that time i was v breathless and had chest pain and after tests they diagnosed cardiomyopathy saying it was unrelated to kidney probs and i had been born with it.There are many types of this and some people in fact most I think live a long life with no symptoms and in others it is kept under control with drugs and if it is advanced there is surgery which is still experimental or a transplant. It can occur following a virus or infection ,it also can occur in childbirth or it is genetic.a parent has a 50%chance of passing it on As thee has been no firm genetic link found with me I haven't had ds tested he is 10 but I know the doctors will suggest it soon and that is the ome thing I am scared of

I had an epidual with 1st delivery what impact does this have on hcm as following the epidural there was a lot of commotion about my heart rate and the babys but once delivered nothing more was said.

Professor MacKenna is still unsure about me and feels although my heart looks like a classic HCM on echo he think it is just thickening caused by high bp and want to try and watch it respond to medication whereas my consultant here in brighton thinks it is HCM and will want to test my ds even though St Georges haven't suggested it If my ds had this it would break my heart

Demented · 28/01/2005 14:54

Just seen this, Misdee. I hope your dh is getting the treatment he needs and is soon home again. Another positive story from here - a 30yo chap dh worked with offshore came back from a holiday in the Canaries feeling pretty ill. He was admitted to hospital, CM was diagnosed, he was then transferred to Glasgow and had a new heart, all in the space of two weeks! He made an excellent recovery, though I'm not sure if he's back working offshore - will ask dh when he gets home. Take care.

edam · 28/01/2005 16:56

Misdee, only just seen this. Sending you and your dh lots of good wishes.

miam · 28/01/2005 17:07

Misdee - this must be such a hard time for you. Sending you my thought and hugs xxxxx

misdee · 28/01/2005 17:10

Just got in. DH is not looking good. he is suffering circulation probs now, he is getting horrible pains in his feet and legs which is making his legs go white and very cold. its all very odd. Poor man is in tears with the pain.

He should be moved upto to cardio as soon as they get a bed free up there so his cardiologist can see him easier. She is liasing with Dr banner (??) at harefield as to what steps to take, whats tests to run etc, as they may want some done there at stevenage or at harefield. dh is very breathless even when justttrying to talk, and has been back on oxygen.
