Lansoprazole experiences

Hello! I’m just wondering how good people have found lansoprazole for acid reflux? My GP recently switched me from omeprazole after I saw her about a persistent tickly throat. The throat symptoms have not improved after 2 weeks of lansoprazole and additionally I’ve had 3 attacks of heartburn which I have very rarely suffered with before. I’ve also been having back and chest discomfort which comes and goes, this could be anxiety because I’ve got myself utterly convinced that I have cancer of the esophagus.

I’ll have to brave the gaviscon. Got an appointment at 4.30 so I’m going to ask about stopping them. It’s the only thing that can have caused such a dramatic worsening. Nothing else has changed!

@Boredofmygutsthe thing is, until the last few weeks (and for the heart burn the last few days) I could eat dinner at 8.30pm and go to bed at 9.30pm with no problems… so it really seems like the ppis are causing my issues!

@Greenfingers37thats very interesting but i had a coeliac test as part of some other investigations so I dont think mine can be that.

I do have a gallbladder… but was under the impression that i would have pain in my stomach with gallstones?

What did they suggest? You don't know that nothing else has changed inside though. Could be a stone.

maeve84 · 23/01/2026 20:45

My pain is higher than bra level, probably a couple of inches up from the middle of my bra. I’m not discounting a stone, it could be for all I know!

she offered to switch me to esomeprazole but I said I’d quite like to try going off the poo and see what happens so she agreed. She said as I’ve only been taking it a couple of week I could go straight off but to be safe go to every other day. I’ve got some gaviscon advanced tablets and having one now as I can just feel the pain returning. I wanted the liquid but I can’t stand aniseed and my chemist didn’t have the advanced one in peppermint flavour

Hope you feel better this evening!

maeve84 · 23/01/2026 21:07

thank you! I just want to wake up not in pain!

I took lansoprasole alongside another medication that could damage my
stomach and stopped as soon as I stopped the medication. I was on it for about 6 months. I always had bad reflux and it seems to have settled it too (as long as I don’t eat wheat)

Just be aware of timings with any other medications or supplements because it can change the absorption rate of other meds if taken too close together

maeve84 · 23/01/2026 21:23

The gaviscon advanced seems to be some kind of witch craft! It’s done in 20 minutes what two Rennies couldn’t do last night!
I ate so early tonight to avoid going to bed with a full stomach that I’m now starving, but I’ll take it over the pain!

Great news op!
Last night I ate white bread, houmous, carrot sticks, dark chocolate and a vodka soda and went to sleep an hour later. Absolutely fine.

But some nights I can have avocado on toast at 5pm, sleep at 9pm and feel absolutely rancid all night. There's no logic to it.

Glad the tablets worked. I can't stand them. The slimy side makes me want to puke 😂 I think you are supposed to chew rather than suck but.... 🤢

maeve84 · 24/01/2026 07:32

I completely know what you mean about the slimy side! It is gross - but better than aniseed for me! I’ve woken up without heartburn but my chest feels really tight. Not sure if that’s related to reflux or my anxiety that it’s going to start up again. I’m to go without the lansoprazole today so keeping everything crossed that it doesn’t get unbearable

I cannot get either prescribed until I’ve had an endoscopy, I was referred last March and have an appointment with Consultant in May then who knows how long for the actual endoscopy.

As long as you stop taking it for two weeks before the endoscopy you should be fine to take it now, that seems odd

maeve84 · 24/01/2026 08:19

I asked to come off it @MissSmileybecause my symptoms have got worse not better so it’s obviously not helping and might be making things worse

Used to think my bra was causing heartburn and that that couldn't be possible. CT 3 years ago picked up a hiatus hernia! I also get reflux, heartburn. Omeprazole 20mg daily wasn't helping. I saw an ENT consultant who said he thought it was a virus! GP visit, endoscopy was 4 weeks time, I didn't see the gastro team or consultant first. They found gastroenteritis and oesophagitis, said I must continue with ppis. Back to GP, changed to lansoprazole, gastro team said take it with meals, GP said it doesn't matter when you take it, packaging says at least 30 minutes before eating. She said double the dose if required and gaviscon as well. I had a cholecystectomy many years ago. I have up caffeine, tomatoes, onions, alcohol, anything vaguely spiced. The H2 blockers were very popular 25 years ago (I was nursing) and I haven't seen them used for many years now, because of the side effects..I requested a nasal endoscopy, one thing I learnt, don't swallow while the tube is down.. I've been told I will be on ppis for life. I watched my df die of esophagial cancer, he didn't cough,he couldn't swallow. He had gastric ulcers, heartburn for 50 years.

Nannyfannybanny · 24/01/2026 08:44

Gastritis, phone altered that to gastroenteritis

maeve84 · 24/01/2026 08:47

I have suspected I have a hiatus hernia for ages. But my ultrasound was clear (although a good few years ago). I’m not sure if I should stay on the poo in case it is something like gastritis or just come off it!
Cancer of the oesophagus is my big fear as I know how untreatable it is.

I’m so scared to eat this morning in case it sets things off 🙈

Airyfaerie · 24/01/2026 09:00

Omeprazole didn't did anything for me, so the doctor switched me to lansaprazole and I haven't had another flare up since. I think it just depends on the individual

Nannyfannybanny · 24/01/2026 09:40

I was eating earlier and earlier, then last year, I was getting upper gastric pain, for 3/4 hours at night, that's why I went back to the GP, I thought I probably had an ulcer. DH has had them and had the same symptoms, but Helibactor test was negative.

An endoscopy can tell if there is a hiatus. These conditions are not static and can improve as well as getting worse. My hiatus improved ! You may feel pain today if your body has been pulsing inside in an attempt to clear a food blockage. Once these conditions eg hiatus etc are observed you are well within your rights to say - it's been 18 months since I've had one can it be checked again. They did this for me as I was worried about Barrett's esophagus.

maeve84 · 26/01/2026 14:49

My insurance turned down the claim as I’ve been on omeprazole within the last 5 years so they say
its a related condition even though it was totally different symptoms.
So now I have to wait for the nhs referral. Is there somewhere you can look to see what the wait times are for your area?

Woke in the night with bad heartburn for the first time ever last night. Gaviscon relieved it, but things are definitely getting worse. I’m feeling really low and scared, and can’t believe how long I’m going to have to be like this before I even get in to the system

OP posts:
sequinpanties · 29/01/2026 09:03

Get back on to your gp and tell them it's getting worse. It's worth a go. You could take Gaviscon as a preventative before you go to bed. It is used in this fashion even when you are on the meds.

maeve84 · 29/01/2026 09:13

Yes I think that was my mistake last night. I skipped the evening gaviscon because I’d felt better yesterday.

I have an appointment on the 4th Feb already booked in so will try and hold out for that. I’ve got my daughter’s birthday and party coming up so it’s busy time and as silly as it might sound I don’t want any appointment to clash with those. If I wait till the 4th then even a 2ww should be after her birthday on the 9th.

I’ve gone back to the omeprazole twice daily because the heartburn was just awful. This seems to have fixed that issue and im now back to the tickle in my throat and discomfort in my chest when swallowing.

When I'm having a flare-up, Sodium Alginate solution before bed prevents it disturbing me in the night, and after a couple of doses it usually calms the flare-up and any irritation right down.

There's no need to fork out on Gaviscon liquid, the pharmacy own brand stuff works just as well and is half the price.

Have you had the camera down for a look yet?

Are you overweight?

Do certain foods set you off do you think? Start keeping a food diary.

maeve84 · 02/02/2026 22:23

@justasking111no camera yet. My GP has referred me to gastro but not urgently. Having looked up the hospital wait times I think it’s 16 weeks :(
Im. It over weight, if anything I’m under weight and this is not helping as I’m a bit scared to eat! I do think some of the discomfort is probably in my head as I do get anxious around health.

I’m yet to pinpoint anything specific that sets me off, I have been keeping a bit of a diary. I’ve moved to de caf tea and trying not to have so much chocolate as I’ve read both these are bad, but can’t say either has been a trigger
