Lansoprazole experiences

Hello! I’m just wondering how good people have found lansoprazole for acid reflux? My GP recently switched me from omeprazole after I saw her about a persistent tickly throat. The throat symptoms have not improved after 2 weeks of lansoprazole and additionally I’ve had 3 attacks of heartburn which I have very rarely suffered with before. I’ve also been having back and chest discomfort which comes and goes, this could be anxiety because I’ve got myself utterly convinced that I have cancer of the esophagus.

I really worry about osteoporosis and other mineral absorption. I just don’t want to be on it. The wait for non urgent gastro is about 17 weeks though, so I’ve got at least 8 weeks still to wait

That shouldn't do you much harm, it's being on it for years that's a real problem. I hope you reach the top of the list soon. Do you take vitamin and mineral supplements? I think I'd look at those if not.

Hiatus hernias are different to stomach hernias, my Dad and my DB both had one in lower intestines, you could see the hernia bulging, they both had the operation to put hernia back with mesh over. It’s not the same with hiatus hernias, it was explained to me that it’s like a bin lid lifting up after food and acid comes back up, instead of digesting back down and the PPI helps to keep the lid on.

PPI doesn’t keep the lid on, it just lessens the amount of acid your stomach produces, which has its own issues.

Liquorice root sounds interesting but I get palpitations so I’d better not go that route. I’m trying zinc l-carnosine which is an inflammation reducer (I have inflammation in my lower tract) and I’m going to try the slippery elm again. I’ll need to set alarms on my phone as remembering all this is a nightmare. The L-carnosine seems to be effective already for the bottom half.
I came off Ppi as it wasn’t doing anything although last night I woke with the awful taste in my mouth. I think my dinner of tray baked chicken legs w veg did it as too fatty? I seem to react to dark meat (I don’t even eat red meat).
At least I’m the only one in for dinner tonight so I can have it early and light.

It's the glycyrrhizin in liquorice that causes palpitations, so you ought to be OK on the version I posted about above.

I've got rheumatoid arthritis in remission with a whole cocktail of non prescription antinflammatories! I've begun reducing them one by one to see what the least I can get away with is.

For anyone struggling with systemic inflammation, lateral flow finger-prick blood tests are now available on Amazon for under £10 for testing your CRP levels. They're identical to the hospital ones I was paying £35 for from a medical supplier.

@Imdunferi do take a women’s multivitamin so hopefully that’ll help the bugs a bit.

I’ve been reading this with interest as I am suffering with similar symptoms myself. I do get heartburn occasionally but all of a sudden a few months ago it increased a lot where I was getting it every day. I put it down to anxiety as I have had a very stressful time with one thing and another.
I was getting chest pain right through to my back and the top of my stomach felt sore.
No coughing though.
I went to gp who prescribed omeperazole for 4 weeks. It took about 10 days and I felt a bit better then it all went downhill again and by the end of the course I was getting odd pin prick type pains in my upper stomach.
I am doing all the suggested things like not eating at least 3 hours before bed and taking gaviscon now and then. I find that if I leave too long before eating in the day my stomach feels worse. I want to try some alternative remedies and got some slippery elm but I suspect it’s just a waste of money and I will end up going back to gp. It just seems like such a song and dance to get anything done though. The gp I saw, although he was very nice, just quickly prescribed the meds and rushed me out. No request to see me again or any other advice. I asked about hiatus hernia and he said it would be the same treatment even if it was that.
Hope you get your appointment soon OP.

@CountrySnail did they consider gall stones?

CountrySnail · 05/04/2026 12:48

No. This wasn’t mentioned. Doc didn’t even examine me/feel my stomach. Pain is in the middle though so I never even thought of gallstones.

CountrySnail · 05/04/2026 13:21

And I’m burping like a bullfrog all the time.

Pain can be right in the middle of bra area . That's my experience. I only ever had it radiate to the back when I had a bile duct stone.

CountrySnail · 05/04/2026 13:41

That’s interesting. I thought it only presented as upper right severe stomach pain.

sequinpanties · 05/04/2026 16:34

Not for me. Intense pain in middle of chest. I've always read about the pain radiating to the back. I never had that with gallstones. Had my gall bladder removed. You still can have the tendency to form stones though and they have less places to form 😬 . Bile duct stone was morphine painful.

CountrySnail · 05/04/2026 17:39

That sounds grim. Fortunately I’ve not been suffering from intense pain although it can be quite uncomfortable. And it comes and goes. Not sure if that fits in with gallbladder problems. Who knows but I bet the gp will just dismiss this thought.
